John NELSON

" John NELSON was born in the capital of Denmark, February 14th, 1844, thus spanning a life of 67 years, 3 months and 13 days. In the autumn of 1861, just as he was approaching his majority, he left his Old Country home for what Fortune could and would furnish him. First in New York City he worked, the following Spring at Davenport, Iowa; then with an ox team he crossed the plains and spent three years in Colorado, Montana and other parts of the mining west. In 1865 he followed the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers to Omaha. Here he landed and spent several months. In 1867 he settled in Fremont, where he met Miss Margaret Anderson whom he married on May 25, 1867, forty-one years ago, 1869 found him on a homestead in Saunders county, 1879 on a claim in Holt county, 1882 on a farm in Antelope county, their continuous home from that time until moving to town a few months ago. Of this marriage were thirteen children, eight sons and five daughters, all living except two, a son & a daughter who died in infancy. With these are seventeen grandchildren to crown the fireside of this home. It was during a quarterly meeting held in Saunders county, in June 1877, that our brother united with the Methodist Episcopal church; he died with his name subscribed on its roll, an honored member. John Nelson was a pioneer citizen held in the universal respect and friendship with those longest known, and in high esteem by others. Fullness of hospitality was a prominent trait of his life, and as a citizen, friend and relative he did his part with excellence. For two years failing health had been claiming him for decline and finally death. Several spells had prostrated him during the winter, but he rallied and seemed to improve. Plans had been made to observe the anniversary of that wedding day, with the eleven children and seventeen grandchildren at home. They were at home, but not to gather around the family board, but about the dying bed of the father;for asthmatic heart failure came and changed the reunion into a sad hour, Mr. Nelson dying at 4 o'clock on Tuesday morning, May 26, 1908, suddenly, painlessly; at peace with God and man-and what more could we ask for him or ourselves?"--Tilden Citizen
