Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-October 10, 1929

CARRIE NORTON

Mrs Carrie NORTON, for many years a resident of Oakdale, died at the home of her son-in-law, Ed TATGE, at Norfolk, Friday October 4, 1929. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Norfolk Monday afternoon and the body was brought to Oakdale for interment beside her husband. The Rebekah Lodge of Oakdale, of which the deceased had been a member for more than twenty-six years, took charge of the services at the grave, carrying out the arrangements for the funeral made by Mrs NORTON before her death. Mrs NORTON was born in Iowa October 7, 1851 and would have been 78 years old in three more days at the time of her death. She left Oakdale about 12 years ago to make her home with her son-in-law in Norfolk. Her only surviving relatives, besides Mr TATGE, are some nieces and nephews.

Luman Munger NORTON

Abridged: Luman Munger Norton was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, September 1, 1846 and died at his home in Oakdale, January 4, 1916, aged 69 years, 4 moths and 3 days. The early years of his life were spent near the place of his birth. Later he moved with his parents to eastern Iowa where he grew to manhood. During the civil war he enlisted in Co E, 5th Iowa Cavalry and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. On December 15, 1869 he was united in marriage at Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa to Nancy Caroline Shephard who survives him. To this union four children were born. Two sons died in infancy and Mrs Jennie Kesling at Bartlett, NE, February 25, 1912. In 1887 he moved to Nebraska and settled in Plainview. He moved to Oakdale in the fall of 1891. He was a member of Oakdale Lodge No 113, I. O.O.F. and Kilpatrick Post, GAR. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs Jessie Tatge of Randolph, Ne, two brothers and two sister, M A Norton of North Bend, Oregon, Oscar Norton of Laraca, NE, Mrs Addie Cotant and Mrs Lillie Mattos of Los Angeles, CA. The funeral Thursday afternoon, was under the direction of Oakdale Lodge, No 113, I.O.O.F. and the services were held at the Oakdale U B Church, Rev A M Steele of the M. E. Church gave the Scripture reading and offered prayer and the sermon was preached by Rev J P Blakeley. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.
