JOHN HYRAM SLUSHER

John H. Slusher, 76, died at his home here Sunday morning of a heart ailment and complications. He had been in poor health for some time. Mr. Slusher came to Nebraska in 1887 and in 1890 started working for the Fremont Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad. This railroad was consolidated with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1903, and he continued as an employee for 43 years, retiring in 1937. He had been a resident of Oakdale for 35 years. On June 1, 1909 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Belle BRETZ of Oakdale, Nebraska, and to this union two children were born. John Hyram SLUSHER was born at Mintonburg, Monroe county, Ohio, March 8, 1868, and passed away at his home in Oakdale after a lingering illness on March 12, 1944, at the age of seventy-six years and four days. His wife, one daughter, MRS. EILEEN DAVIS of Watsonville, Ca., and one son, Russell SLUSHER of Omaha, survives him. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church conducted by Rev. O. E. Hall, pastor of the United Brethren church, and assisted by Rev. H. G. Langley. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Mary Belle (BRETZ) SLUSHER

Mary Belle Bretz as born on December 2, 1870 at Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of John and Martha Bretz. She came with her parents to Oakdale, Nebraska about 1883. She was united in marriage to John H Slusher at Columbus, Nebraska on June 1, 1909. To this union two children were born, Russell, now of Omaha and Eileen, Now Mrs Charles Davis of San Lorenzo, CA. Her husband passed away in 1944. Mrs Slusher had spent the greater part of the last three years with her son in Omaha. She suffered a stroke in January, from which she never fully recovered and was called home on September 30, 1952 at the age of eighty-one years, nine months and twenty eight days. She was a kind and loving mother and neighbor, always helping wherever and whenever she was needed. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Ladies Aid and active in church activities. She leaves to mourn her passing her son and daughter, two grandchildren, her daughter-in-law and son-in-law, a sister, Mrs Charles McIntosh of Los Angeles, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church here Friday afternoon by Rev E. A. Gaither. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. Out of town attendees were Nial Bretz and Cheryl of Ainsworth, Mr and Mrs Harry Hagedorn and Mr and Mrs Herman Selling of Norfolk, Mrs Dora Witte of Wisner and Mr. and Mrs Gus Hagedorn and Mr and Mrs Vern Hagedorn of West Point.
