Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-November 22, 1907

ALONZO HARRISON SNIDER

Alonzo Harrison SNIDER, 2nd son of J. H. and M. E. SNIDER, was born in Coshockton, Ohio on October 3, 1840. Twenty years later they moved to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and then to Montana. In 1870 he came to Antelope County. In June 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine STOLP. He died at the business house of his brother-in-law, Loren MEANS, on Monday, November 18, 1907. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Rev. R. Frank SHACKLOCK preaching the sermon. Burial was in the the Oakdale Cemetery.

Alonzo John SNIDER

Alonzo John Snider, son of Charles and Harriet Snider, was born August 11, 1873 in Keya Paha County, Nebraska. He came to the Oakdale community with his parents when a boy of about six years of age and had lived in Oakdale or in the Oakdale community most of his life. On June 23, 1934, he was united in marriage to Hazel Hermann. Lonnie-as he was better known-departed life January 23, 1955 at the Tilden Community Hospital following a prolonged illness, having reached the age of 71 years, 5 months and 12 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Hazel, two sisters, Mrs Byrde Christensen of Wenatchee, WA and Mrs Daisy Lound of Scottsbluff, NE, two nieces and four nephews. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery

CHARLES A SNIDER

Abridged: Charles A SNIDER was born in Morgan County, Ohio, May 22, 1851 and died at his home in Oakdale, Nebraska February 6, 1923. In 1860 he moved with his parents to Iowa and in 1869 came to Antelope County, locating two and one-half miles northeast of Oakdale. After assisting in establishing the frontier home and having reached the years of manhood, in partnership with his brother, he engaged in the livery business in Oakdale. He was married to Harriet Louisa MCPHERSON on April 27, 1880 and in 1882 removed to Keya Paha County. In 1893 the family returned to Oakdale and remained here until his death. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, W. H. SNIDER and Mrs H. H. CHRISTENSEN of Gables, NE, Lon SNIDER of Oakdale, and Mrs Arthur GLASER of Creighton. One daughter, Mary Eleanor, died in 1912. Mrs SNIDER departed this life February 28, 1921. Funeral services were held at the home conducted by Rev. J. M. GRIFFITHS. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Abridged: After an illness on many months Mrs. C. A. Snider departed this life at 1 o’clock p. m., February 28, 1921, at her home in this city. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, at the home, conducted by Rev. W. W. HUGHES pastor of the Elgin Presbyterian Church. Harriet Louisa McPHERSON was born in Chicago, Ill., December 11, 1859. She married Charles A. SNIDER on April 27, 1880. She is survived by her husband, two sons and two daughters, William H. SNIDER and Alonzo J. SHORT of Oakdale, Mrs H. H. CHRISTENSEN of Wausa, and Daisy S. SNIDER of Norfolk.

IDA B BOWEN SNIDER

Funeral services were held December 21 at the Oakdale Church of Christ for Mrs Ida SNIDER, 98, Oakdale’s oldest resident, who died December 18, 1958 at the Pershing hospital in Grand Island. Bob BALANSHAN of Lincoln conducted the rites. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery. Ida B BOWEN was born March 16, 1859 near Rowan on the shore of Lake Erie, Ontario, Canada, to NELSON and Susanna BOWEN. One of her ancestors was Colonel NELSON BOWEN who received from the English CROWN a grant of land along the Hudson for distinguished service under Prince William of Orange, about the end of the seventeenth century. During the Revolution the land was confiscated and the BOWENs removed to Ontario. In 1867, Ida moved with her parents from Canada to Annawan, Illinois. At the age of 19, Miss BOWEN accompanied her parents to Nebraska where they homesteaded on the Beaver, northwest of Albion. Three years later, in 1880, she married LEWIS L SNIDER of Oakdale and outside of a short time spent in Grand Island, she made Oakdale her home. She was a member of the Baptist Church at Grand Island, later joining the Church of Christ at Oakdale. Mrs SNIDER made her home with her daughter, Mrs Charles IHLENFELD of Oakdale since her husband’s death. Mrs SNIDER is survived by two daughters, Mrs F. W. SHIVELY of Richmond, California and Mrs IHLENFELD, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Leonard OBERSHAW, Richard CHILDS, Paul HOFACKER, Harry_____, R. H. ALMSTRUM, Ralph _____.


Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-March 18, 1910

JOHN S SNIDER

Abridged: John SNIDER, son of Mrs Kate SNIDER CONVELL, was born near Oakdale July 3, 1883. He was married to Miss Marie SWANSON of Oakdale on March 12, 1903. He died March 12, 1910 in an Omaha Hospital. SNIDER worked for the Union Pacific railroad. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Oakdale. In charge of services was Rev J. V. HAWK of Neligh and interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery. There were no children but his mother and wife survive.

Leroy J SNIDER

Abridged: Leroy J Snider was born in Coshockton County, Ohio, March 23, 1839. In August 1860 he removed to Woodbury County, Iowa. On April 27, 1869 he came to Antelope County and took as a homestead the land now owned by G. E. Peets, just east of Oakdale. When the town of Oakdale was started he engaged in the livery business in partnership with his brother Charles. About 1875 he entered the same line of business at Neligh and continued there for several years. Returning to Oakdale he became owner of a part of the farm that was his father’s pioneer home and lived upon this land until a few days before his death. He never married and for many years lived alone save for the companionship of nephews and nieces. Although prominent in the early development of the county he never held public officer. Mr Snider passed away at the home of his brother Monday evening November 17, 1919. He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, C A and L L Snider and Mrs C D Buck of Oakdale and Mrs Lauren Means of Robstown, Texas. Funeral services were held Thursday morning, conducted by the members of Trowel Lode, AF and A M, of Neligh of which he was a charter member. He was a Mason for more than fifty years, joining the fraternity in Sioux City. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

LEWIS LUDWELL SNIDER

Abridged: Lewis Ludwell SNIDER was born in Morgan County, Ohio, December 16, 1845 where he lived with his parents until 1860. During this time he traveled quite extensively all over the south. On August 18, 1860 he moved with his parents to Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa. He served one year with Company E of the Iowa Cavalry. In 1869 he removed with his father to Antelope County, Nebraska. He was married October 13, 1880 to Ida B. BOWEN. To this union were born two children, both now living in Oakdale, Mrs F. W. SHIVELY and Miss Grace L SNIDER. He passed away on August 14, 1925. He leaves a wife, two children and four grandchildren to mourn his loss. The funeral services were held at the home on Sunday, August 16. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

MARY ELEANOR SNIDER

Abridged: Mary Eleanor SNIDER, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. A. SNIDER, was born at home on March 10, 1885 and died at her home in Oakdale, February 23, 1912. She came to Oakdale in 1893. Funeral services were held at the family residence Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. W. SYNDER of the Methodist Church. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Mrs J. H. SNIDER

Grandma SNIDER passed away last Saturday November 24, 1900 after a long illness at the age of 80 years. She was one of the pioneers of this County. The funeral was held at the house on Sunday at 1 p.m.
