Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-August 8, 1924

ANNA MARY BRUNER TORPIN

Abridged: Anna Mary BRUNER was born October 24, 1841 near Carlisle, Pennsylvania. At the age of four years she came with her parents to Rock Island County, Illinois. Here she grew to womanhood, teaching school and helping to care for her younger sister and brothers as her mother died when was but fifteen years of age. On November 17, 1868 she was married to Henry TORPIN. To them has been granted the rare privilege of a continuous, happy union of 60 years, 8 months and 12 days. Two children were born to this union, C. H. of Oakdale and Louise of Los Angeles. They resided in Rock Island County until 1886 with the exception of a few years in Iowa. In 1886 they came to Fremont, Nebraska and to Oakdale in 1896. The deceased was for over two thirds of century a consistent and devoted Christian, a consistent reader of the Bible all her life and could quote entire chapters. When they came to Oakdale she associated with the M. E. Church in which she continued until she was called to her heavenly home, about which her faith was supreme. About two weeks ago Mrs TORPIN’s health began to fail rapidly and she passed away at one o’clock Thursday, July 31, 1924, being aged 82 years, 9 months and seven days. She is survived by her husband, a son and daughter, two sisters and three brothers, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Church Saturday afternoon, August 2, conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. L. MEYERS, assisted by the pastor of the United Brethren Church, Rev. A. B. SMALL. Burial was made on the family lot in the beautiful Oakdale Cemetery.

Charles Henry TORPIN

Abridged: Burial services were held here Tuesday for C H Torpin, 86, former Oakdale business man, who died in San Francisco, CA on August 29. Services were held in San Francisco, August 30 and short services were held at the Marshall Mortuary in Tilden. Charles Henry Torpin was born in Port Byron, IL on December 2, 1864 and died at San Francisco, CA on August 29, 1951. He was married to Effie M Hollister of Port Byron on October 17, 1888. Her death occurred in 1914. To this union were born six children, Richard of Augusta, GA, Keith of Mitchell, SD, Mildred Lackaff of San Francisco, Maurine (deceased), Ralph of Calabasas, CA, and Paul of Minneapolis, MN. On April 14, 1916, he was married to Mary E Brainard of Oakdale, NE, who survives him. To this union was born one son, Donald, of Venice, CA. In addition to the surviving children, he leaves to mourn his passing, thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Relatives attending services were Paul Torpin of Minneapolis, MN, Donald Torpin of Venice, CA, Mr and Mrs Keith Torpin of Mitchell, SD, Mr and Mrs Stanley Torpin and Mr and Mrs Kenneth Torpin of Central City and Quentin Torpin of Mason City, IA.

Effie M HOLLISTER TORPIN

Abridged: Effie M HOLLISTER was born near Port Byron, IL, September 28, 1865 and died at Galesburg, IL, where she had gone for treatment, on November 20, 1914. She was married to C. H. TORPIN at Port Bryon, IL on October 17, 1888. In January 1891, Mr and Mrs TORPIN came to Oakdale, Nebraska. They were United with the Methodist Church. She leaves her husband, four sons, Ivan, Keith, Ralph and Paul and one daughter, Mildred; and a brother, George HOLLISTER. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Maurine. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church and burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

HENRY TORPIN

Abridged: Henry TORPIN was born at Abington, Montgomery County, PA on December 24, 1841 in which place he lived until 1856 when with his parents he moved to Coe township, IL, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Anna M BRUNER on November 17, 1863. He moved to Fremont, NE in 1863 and then to Oakdale in 1890. Since the first of the year he was slowly failing in health and passed peacefully away on June 18, 1927 at the home of his son C. H. TORPIN in California. He is survived by his son, daughter, Mrs Louise TORPIN NORTON, two sisters, Mrs Elizabeth ALLEN of Port Byron, IL and Mrs Louisa ALLEN of Idaho. He was preceded in death by seven siblings. Funeral services were held on Monday, June 20, in Van Nuys, CA. The remains were cremated and sent to Oakdale for burial in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Henry Keith TORPIN

Henry Keith Torpin, Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Keith Torpin, died Monday February 10, 1919 after a brief illness, aged 1 month and 23 days. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home and interment was made on the family lot in the Oakdale Cemetery.

HENRY KEITH TORPIN

Funeral services for Henry Keith TORPIN of Mitchell, South Dakota were held Saturday, June 21, at Mitchell, South Dakota, with interment at the Oakdale Cemetery in Oakdale. Keith Torpid, the son of Charles H. and Effie Mae (HOLSTER) TORPIN, was born at Oakdale, December 23,1892 and died June 19, 1980 at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 28 days. Keith grew to manhood and attended school in Oakdale, he later attended Nebraska Wesleyan University. He was united in marriage to Vera STANLEY at Clarks, on March 26, 1915. He farmed and ranched near Elgin, operated a grain elevator in Oakdale for a number of years and then became a sales representative for I. D. Russell Co. In 1939 and was employed by them for over 30 years. The couple was residents of Mitchell, South Dakota for the past 40 years. Survivors include three sons, Stanley of Central City, Ken of O’Neill and Quentin "Bing" of Pleasanton, California, 16 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, Hollister and Keith, four brothers and one sister.

The death of Maurine TORPIN, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. H. TORPIN, occurred this afternoon, October 23, 1908. She was buried in the Oakdale Cemetery.
