Sarah WASHBURN

Abridged: Funeral services were held for Sarah Washburn at the Methodist Church on Saturday afternoon. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. Sarah Washburn was born July 21, 1872 at Hastings, Nebraska and died at the Plantation Home in Elgin on February 2, 1955. In the middle 1870s she came with her parents from Wauneta, NE to Antelope County. The family lived on a farm north of Oakdale for some time and moved to Oakdale in October 1879. She lived the rest of her life in the same house with the exception of a little time spent in South Dakota. Sarah was the oldest child in her family. She had one sister, two brothers, one half-sister and two half-brothers. It is not known if any of these are still living. Two brothers passed away at the home in Oakdale-one in infancy and one-Del, as he was known here-in December 1911. Her mother died about three weeks later in January 1912. All her life, Sarah worked hard and lived frugally, doing many a hard day’s work for as little as twenty-five cents a day. She was honest, truthful and dependable in every way. A little more than three years ago her health became such that she could no longer live alone and take care of herself, so she became a resident of Plantation Home in Elgin where she had been since February, 1952.
