Frank Anderson, who resided on the west side of the Logan, departed Tue for Rock Island, Ill where he will reside for sometime.

Gust Swanson came down New Years day from Wausa to visit friends and relatives. He used to clerk in most of the stores here in Oakland before becoming the leading merchandising firm of Wausa.

Oakland school news: Minnie Anderson is a new pupil of the 2nd Intermediate. Gust Johnson too. WA Harding and John P. Anderson are members of the school board.

Westraud: Miss Emma Anderson & Miss Annie Kindschul visited the school in District 13.

MS Johnson, left Burt Co. a year ago, moving to Waterford, Indiana and in better health.

Craig News: 11 year old son of Jim Johnson, living 5 mi. SW of Craig, was kicked by a horse. Scalp cut from over the bridge of the nose over and to the extreme side of the right eye. Skull fractured. Dr. Johnston was called to attend the case.

CJ Swanson mingling with Tekamah citizens.

Misses Alma and Hulda Samuelson, who have been sick at their uncles, Erick Anderson, the latter quite bad with pneumonia, are now better.

Matt Johnson was reported sick on the farm. Dr. Swenson taking care of him.

GA Johnson sold hogs and cattle, which he raised himself.

Swedish Lutheran church held its annual business meeting. Mr. Gust Anderson was re-elected Janitor. Mr. John Anderson was elected delegate to conference to be held at Wahoo. Sabbath's John Anderson and Mr. N. Olander. and V. Allin, elected to take up collections.

CG Anderson, more familiarly known as "Jockey", had attempted suicide at his home in the SE part of town. Found in advanced stage of inebriacy, having drank nearly a quart of crude alcohol, and bleeding from each wrist. Apparently despondent after drinking alcohol, cuts his wrists, and attempts to burn down the room by spreading coal-oil around and setting it on fire. Some of the family put out the fire without serious damage.

Oscar Anderson, son of P.G. Anderson., died in Joliet, Ill., last Friday and was brought here for burial on today. The deceased has many relatives here among the Lundstroms and Swansons. !!!! (need to check this out!)

Mr./Mrs. Emanuel Johnson have sent cards announcing their address of 2518 Davenport St., Omaha, NE.

Mrs. Harding participated in Mrs. Jarley's Wax Works at the meeting of the Ladies Aid Society.

CJ Swanson attended republican country central committee in Tekamah.

Ed Wallerstedt drove to Tekamah yesterday to deliver to F Griffin his soda fountain which he sold to Mr. Griffin.

Joseph Johnson is the Swaburg correspondent of the Hooper Sentinel.

Misses Edith and Hilma Danielson and Alma Johnson, young ladies of the west side, departed Sat. for Omaha where they expect to remain for a time at least.

Mrs. CJ Swanson returned from Boyd County where she spent more than two weeks in the care of a sister who has been dangerously ill. She left her sister much improved with a certainty of recovery.

Charles Lundstrom and CN Nelson were cutting down a tree on the island. Tree fell over prematurely, due to rot. Broke off, struck Mr. Lundstrom, thrown him to the ground and bruising him some but not seriously injuring him. Mr. Nelson was pinned, breaking one leg. Mr. Lundstrom called for assistance.

John Johnson has rented the John Martin property.

Charlie Anderson has discovered that he can not farm profitably and will sell al of his personal property at auction next Monday. He appears to be C.H. Anderson

Albert Anderson while shelling corn last week got his hand mixed up among the cogs and now goes about with his fingers done up in dry goods.

Westrand neighborhood: Peter Johnson, brother of J. M. Johnson has been visiting him the past week.

Herman Kohler and wife, Wm. Dinkleman and AB Gallup were callers on JM Johnson and were well entertained.

Frank Wallerstedt will not move his family from Tekamah as he had first intended but will occupy the John L. Wilson residence. Frank will be away most of the time and Mrs. Wallerstedt would rather resided in Tekamah rather than Omaha.

Mrs. M. Swanson went to Omaha to visit her daughter Mrs. Emanuel Johnson.

CJ Swanson visited Bancroft, E. E. Snygg clerking in the store in his absence.

Oliver Swanson of Tekamah to purchase a subscription.

Mrs. C.H. Anderson and child were passengers on Wed.'s train for Omaha to visit friends.

Neighbor Shackleford has moved into the J.P. Johnson house near the Mission church and has thereby gotten out of town. This will save him some taxes on his household furniture but he will have to pay village taxes on his bank account.

A party was given at the home of Mr./Mrs. Swan Lundstrom Thursday of last week in honor of Miss Hulda Samuelson.

CH Anderson of Oakland was down here last week distributing his sale bills. (Craig)

Charles G. Anderson of Oakland paid a visit to his brother-in-law in Swaburg.

Frank Anderson, our merchant, has purchased a telegraph outfit and will try to get in a few chicks (sic) between customers. :-)

Miss Daisy Johnson, a friend of Miss Ida Samson, teacher of the 1st Intermediate, visited the school.

(Westrand) Esther Anderson and Hulda Anderson received many valentines at school. Miss Esther Anderson was helping A.B. Gallup in Postmaster duties, with Mess Emma Anderson was chosen as carrier. Miss Esther Anderson received the first valentine, which was very fine.. Voting again happened and this time Miss Esther Johnson was made the carrier.

Chas. Johnson, formerly of Oakland, has incorporated himself with JA Hallberg of this city (Thurston).

Matt Johnson drove with John A. Peterson to West Point.

Mrs. Chas. Anderson and children returned from a visit with friends in Council bluffs, Iowa.

Miss Mollie Johnson of Craig, spent Sunday with friends in this city.

Sid. Swanson attended a party at the home of the newsman . Sid is in it with the Craig lasses.

L.E. Wallerstedt was an Omaha visitor to look after the purchasing of a restaurant by Gust Engdahl, but no deal closed yet.

Rev. C.B. Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa, will preach in the mission church on the west side, in Swedish language.

Swaburg: Mrs. Carrie Johnson, mother of Joe and Eph was under the weather a few days with the grip. Joe Johnson, Eph Johnson, P. Larson, Oliver Larson, Chas. Erickson and John Peterson were in Fremont. (Swaburg)

(Craig) John Johnson, has sold his draying business to Ora Buchanon and has accepted a position on the section (newspaper?)

John P. Anderson visited school Friday morning. Hannah Johnson, a pupil of the second primary has left school. All her classmates are sorry to lose her presence.

FA Wallerstedt, Tekamah insurance man, was in town.

AM Anderson, County Clerk, and Sheriff JA Clark passed through Oakland with Dan Tarr in custody who they took to the Norfolk Asylum..

Andrew Anderson the popular hotel man of Lyons, visited.

Mrs. Alfred Samuelson and little daughter left for a few days visit with friends at Craig.

Oake Johnson and his two brothers returned from a two months visit to their old home in Sweden.

Rev CB Johnson will preach in Mission Church in Salem, later in Oakland.

Victor Johnson of Pender, a former Oakland citizen, while visiting with friends near Oakland met with a very sad accident, while driving to Oakland. His team ran away on the west side, and threw Mr. Johnson from the buggy and putting his hands out to protect his face, had them cut on the barb wire fence and the team completely demolished the buggy.

John P. Anderson, successful farmer, brought in a small chick in a very large shell. Displayed at CJ Swanson's store.

Oakland School Notes. Mrs. E. Johnson and Miss Mary Johnson, of Omaha, were taking in the sights at the school.

Craig News: Pete Johnson and family moved out on their farm, Tuesday. Art Anderson and Sam Houston of Tekamah, were in Craig.

Andrew Anderson who has been in Minnesota for some time returned to Oakland last week.

Mr. Nicholis Hoff of Laurie, Iowa, a friend of Dr. Swenson, visited with the latter Friday while en route to Sioux City.

County Clerk A.M. Anderson spent Sunday in the city.

Herman Johnson, son of our baker M.W. Johnson left for Omaha last week and will remain there for about two months with an uncle.

Gene Harding was a Pender visitor Thursday.

CJ Swanson was looking after business in Craig yesterday.

Miss Nellie and Emil Anderson returned to Omaha yesterday, after attending the wedding of their cousin, Miss Nellie Nelson on the west side, Wednesday.

CJ Swanson was a Blair visitor, going down to become familiar with the templar masonry the red cross degree having been conferred upon him at that time.

There occurred at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Olof Nelson about three miles west of Oakland on Wednesday March 4th 1896, the marriage of their oldest daughter Miss Nellie to Chas. Anderson. Rev. Johanson officiating. There were quite a number in attendance and everything passed off well. Miss Anderson is a very bright and attractive young lady and one who is much loved by her many friends for her kind and womanly ways, and is one of Burt County's fairest daughters. Mr. Chas. Anderson is the oldest son of Peter Anderson who resides about four miles west of Oakland and one of our most prosperous farmers.. The young people start out in life with the brightest prospects for a long and happy life, which all their friends hope they may receive. Several very valuable and handsome presents were given. The young people will make their future home on the old home farm of the groom's parents Mr. Peter Anderson.

Chas. Anderson loaded a car of goods here Tuesday which he shipped to Wausa. he having rented a farm near that place and will reside there in the future. Mrs. Anderson left on Monday afternoon.

Program for Teachers Local Institute to be held. Tillie Swanson: Importance of Writing.

August Engdahl and L.E. Wallerstedt did business at Omaha the first of the week. They expect soon to engage in business at that place. Mrs. Emanuel Johnson and Miss Marie Johnson came up on the Friday afternoon train to visit with friends and relatives a short time.

Misses Marie Johnson, Edie Nelson, Grace Neumann, Kate Knollin, Minnie Palmquist, Anna Meek, Nellie Reil and Mrs. Emanuel Johnson gave to their gentlemen friends Messr Hugo E. Nelson, Joe Thomas, WV Jayne, Palmquist, and EW Harding, a leap year sleigh ride which they report are very enjoyable, and the young men they are prepared to meet all such engagements.

VC Sward, who is now attending the Omaha Medical College, we learn has made arrangements to purchase Dr. Swensen's office and fixtures and will succeed him in the practice here some time in April at which time Dr. Swensen contemplates starting for his native land, Norway.

Oakland's young men have organized a male quartet which takes in the following gentlemen: EW Harding, RW Moyer, WB Jayne, Frank Ringquist, and WH VanCleve as Instructor.

On Wednesday, February 4th 1896, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Anderson, seven miles south west of Oakland in the presence of relatives and a few invited friends occurred the marriage of their daughter Hellen, to Mr. Edward Anderson, of Wakefield. Ref. Seaberg officiating. After congratulation the friends were ushered in to the dining room where a table had been prepared by the brides mother which fairly groaned with the weight of the many good things to eat, to which all did ample justice. The bride and groom are quite well known in and around their home near Oakland, and they have the well wishes of their many friends who wish them a long and happy life.

Swaburg: Maud Anderson accompanied Mats Anderson to Lyons one day last week. John Anderson, O Bega, Stanton Co., who was among a short time ago is now with us again, having come overland in a buggy. FO Anderson is not only a successful merchant but he is also a great schemer as he has managed to pull the wool over the eyes of this entire community by introducing Anna Feer as Mrs. Anderson and stating that the marriage took place some time before Christmas. This kind of proceeding knocks the tin cans out of gear and we doubt whether the boys have the courage or not to play him a tune on a dilapidated wash boiler.

Westrand: Gus. Anderson has moved onto the farm recently vacated by Charles Anderson.

Swaburg: PA Anderson sold a car load of hogs to the Hooper buyers last Friday.

Swaburg: John A Anderson and Charles, his brother, of Oakland, paid us a visit last Sunday, their uncle also accompanied them.

Swaburg: John Anderson returned to Begs, Stanton county, last Sunday. Ambrose Erickson went with him and will probably stop there if he finds work.

Craig: CE Johnson took two cars of hogs to Omaha.

Craig: Jim Johnson who is attending college in Blair, is visiting in Craig this week.

Pender: Eugene Harding a prominent young druggist of Oakland was in town yesterday.

The stock of CG Anderson was sold at sheriff sale Saturday.

FA Wallerstedt and family came up from Tekamah for a visit with relatives.

Miss Marie Johnson returned to her home at Omaha after several days visit in Oakland.

Edward Anderson and wife departed for Wakefield Saturday where they will make their future home.

Mrs. Emanuel Johnson after a week's visit with relatives in the city returned to her home at Omaha.

"Tony" Johanson and Joe Wallerstedt are in charge of EA Wallerstedt's store during his absence in Omaha.

Alfred P. Johnson, representing the Omaha Swedish Journal made a visit to our newspaper.

Ed. Wallerstedt and August Engdahl were passengers to Omaha. They will open up a restaurant there the coming week.

Fred Lindell, a brother of Mrs. LE Wallerstedt is visiting the city this week.

Frank E. Lindell, who has lived in this county for several years departed Monday for his native land, Sweden. We learn he will farm near Arset, Sweden.

Frank Lindahl, accompanied by Misses Anna Swanson and Hulda Anderson, of Wakefield, who were in attendance at the Anderson wedding last Wednesday, returned home Friday.

Willie Swanson who has for some time past been working at the creamery, left Tuesday for Omaha where he will work for Engdahl & Wallerstedt in their restaurant.

Chas. Johnson was a passenger to Omaha, yesterday morning where he will visit.

Swaburg: Louis Anderson and wife are among us this week.

PA Anderson went to Fremont last Tuesday and was appointed as Administrator for the estate of Ambrose Erickson.

Miss Tillie Swanson went to Omaha Friday for a visit with her sister, Mrs. Emanuel Johnson.

Dr. Swenson was called Wausa last Friday by telegraph to administer medical treatment to Chas. Anderson, who was found to be quite sick with erysipelas.

Joe Wallerstedt drove down to the county seat Tuesday morning, returning in the evening.

Alfred Ostrand and Joe Wallerstedt were in Tekamah yesterday.

The temperance people met in caucus and nominated as candidates for the respective city offices: WA Harding and A. Gustafson as councilman of the first ward, V. Neumann and M. Swanson as councilman of the second ward.

CJ Swanson transacted business at Bancroft Monday.

Those favoring licensing the sale of liquors in Oakland met, Tuesday night and placed in nomination: Second ward councilman: Andrew Anderson.

We were mistaken in the statement that Miss Marie Johnson went to Omaha, and instead she went overland to Hooper and will visit for a while with her aunt, Mrs. Tunberg. Mr. HE Nelson accompanied her. Dr. Swenson asks everyone to settle their debts, as he is leaving soon to Sweden.

CJ Swanson was a passenger for Blair, where they attended the Knight Templars lodge. CJ Swanson taking the red cross degree. A good time is reported by all except CJ who failed on that occasion to see any fun.

Mrs. Jensen, a lady of Arlington drove all the way by team this week to consult with Dr. Swensen whom she had known and treated with some fifteen years ago in Norway and had but recently learned that he was here. She spoke in very high terms of the doctor's skill.

The following attended the 1 year anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Norberg on the Andrew Palmquist farm, two miles west of the city. Misses Anderson, Swanson. Messrs Anderson, and Mrs. and Mrs. Anderson.

There occurred at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Anderson, in Cuming county the marriage of their oldest daughter, Miss Mathilda to Mr. Alfred Anderson, Rev. John Peterson officiating, on Saturday afternoon March 14. The Misses Amy Johnson and Alphina Peterson acted as bridesmaids, while Victor Anderson and Alvin Anderson acted as best men. The wedding ceremony was witnessed by a large number of invited friends and relatives. After the ceremony all sat down to an excellent supper which had been prepared by Mrs. Anderson and to which all did ample justice. Mr. Alfred Anderson has for a number of years been engaged in farming, having been raised upon one of the best farms in Cuming county, and is a most industrious young man, while the bride has resided in the same county and community for a number of years and is well known for her amiable traits of character and surrounded herself with a large circle of friends. The happy couple will at once take up their residence on a farm near Cuming Creek. Oakland made a city, second class, due to population growth, hence the nominations.

March 27, 1896

Swaburg: Mats Anderson has returned from his overland trip to Omaha and parts of eastern Iowa.

Arthur M Anderson was home yesterday.

Miss Tillie Swanson returned from a week's visit with her sister, Mrs. Emanuel Johnson at Omaha.

Dr. Swenson was called to Herman, to se one of his former patients from his native country, Norway, who now resides at Herman and has the consumption.

Mr./Mrs. Alfred Anderson were the recipients of a surprise given by their friends at their new home on the Carlson farm near Cuming Creek.

LE Wallerstedt, who is now engaged in the restaurant business at Omaha, came up and remained over the weekend with his family. Business is good there.

Swaburg: Mr./Mrs. Joe Johnson went to Hooper last Saturday to see the doctor in regard to their youngest child who has been sick for some time but is now much improved.

Swaburg: Andrew Erickson and Mats Anderson packed their satchels and departed or the north Friday. They were headed for Minn. unless they strike work before they get that far.

John A Swanson visited Omaha.

CJ Swanson has been confined to his room the past week with sickness.

Joe Wallerstedt attended to business at Tekamah, as county supervisor.

Mrs. PJ Johnson and little son departed Saturday for Omaha, and were followed by Mr. Johnson on Monday. They will remain some time.

Charlie Swanson and Frank Friedstrom loaded their effects into a car and started with the night freight for Brainard, where they expect to engage in farming in future.

Rev JH Johnson and wife drove over from Beemer Wed. and returned the following day. Mrs. Johnson made this office an agreeable call, and from him we learn that Mrs. Johnson's health is much improved.

The following went from the A.O.U. W. Lodge of Oakland to Craig to attend a special meting of that lodge as Grand Foreman Ersford, of Seward was in attendance as well as ten or more members of Herman lodge: WA Harding, John Anderson, Andrew Anderson and others. A Mr. Swanson came from Herman.

Tekamah: Art Anderson received his new wheel this week and is very pleased with it.

Swaburg: Annie Johnson of Craig is paying a visit to the family of RL Olsen this week.

Swaburg: FO Anderson will move his store from its present foundation to a more suitable location and also enlarge it.

WA Harding, director of the schools was here in regards to school matters.

Oscar Anderson, class of 1894, was a visitor at the schools, and warmly received.

Returns of elections show Johnny Johnson, independent losing out to AL Neumann. councilman 1st Ward, Alfred Gustafson, temperance with most votes, WA Harding, temperance, just behind him. Councilman 2nd Ward: Andrew Anderson, citizen, beating 3 others, including M. Swanson, of temperance party.

City Council met on April 7, 1896 with WA Harding, Andrew Anderson, Alfred Gustafson in attendance (and others). WA Harding elected to office of president of city council , over Andrew Anderson..

Henry Gieth of Pender visited. He was formerly a clerk for CJ Swanson, and has a large circle of friends here.

Miss Hellen Anderson of Newman Grove, has been visiting relatives and departed back for Omaha.

Oakland has gone dry and WA Harding, one of the councilmen writes a long letter in the Independent, believing because the town is to be dry, is no reason why the merchants' trade should be hurt. He gives some good advice and the article is full of kindness and with a tone that Mr. Harding means well for his neighbors: 'tis a pity we have not more such men. - Decatur News.

John P. Anderson is making extensive improvements on his residence.

Swaburg: Miss Sarah Johnson of Craig is visiting friends in this neighborhood.

Swaburg: CH Anderson and family of Oakland were among us Sunday. Charley has many friends here who are always glad to see him.

CJ Swanson was named as float senatorial candidate for Burt and Cuming Counties.

Rev. AP Swanson from Wakefield Neb, and Rev Chas Youngquist of Coleridge, Neb, attended conference oat the west side Mission church.

The young people gathered at M. Swanson's and organized a literary club.

Very interesting confirmation services were held at the Swedish Lutheran church, last Sabbath, from 10am until 1 pm. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion, with many potted plants, consisting mostly of geraniums and calla lillies, and numerous bouquets of cut flowers were arranged on the pulpit and alter. The pastor, Rev. Swanberg, showed himself very much interested in the admission of the converts and made many timely explanations and remarks on the questions and answers. The candidate, six young ladies and as many young gentlemen, demonstrated to the congregation, their thorough knowledge of the subjects treated, the boys being especially prompt in their response. Those confirmed were, Ernest Beckstrom, Willie Peterson, Sherman Anderson, Fritz Nelson, Emil Force, Adolph Johnson, Emma Anderson, Hilda Carlsten, Edith and Ellen Thunberg, Emma Peterson and Mabel Corey.

Eugene Harding returned Sat. evening from Brock, in Nemaha county, where he has been passing a short vacation, and is once more busy dispensing drugs.

Bert Harding put in most of last week getting a load of sawdust from some mill south of Decatur. He put on a two-ton load while it was wet, and had only gone a short distance when he stuck in the gumbo and remained until the next day. A son of Mike Evans, who lived nearby, and who was helping Bert, had several ribs fractured, by one of his horses kicking him, so taking it altogether, it was an unlucky trip.

Peter Johnson lives west of here in Cuming county. He's a farmer who does most of his trading at West Point.

Franz Anderson, who lives between here and Tekamah, associated with the wrong people while in the county seat last week, and as a result he is shy $20. On July 1, he went to Tekamah and sold a few hogs, and as the money burned his pocket he proceeded to rush the can with a few congenial spirits he fell in with, and when he came to, the money was gone.

Miss Ethyl Lindell returned from Iowa the fore part of the week, and will remain here until September.

Intense lightning storm struck the house of Alfred Johnson, eight miles west of town. Knocked off the chimney, came down inside the front part and went out the door. sixteen people inside the house, all uninjured, although passed within eighteen inches of Olof Newmann who was sleeping by the front door.

Craig: Jimmie Johnson returned from Wisconsin where he has been working the past summer.

Swaburg: Mons Johnson of Mercer was working for the republican party and calling on old friends.

Swaburg: PA Anderson went to Fremont on business connected with the Ambrose-Erickson estate.

Rev. Johnson was a passenger for Omaha.

Sibina (sp?) Johnson, the lady evangelist, held services at the Free church.

Jno. P. Anderson and Oscar Sampson went to Tekamah to attend the Burt county Fair.

Argo: On last Friday evening, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Johnson, who live on the Edgarson homestead, died. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the Free church by Rev. E. Brolund.

Arthur Johnson, a bright young schoolteacher, living 5 miles west of Oakland, was in town and called to secure silver literature.

A number of farmers and wives and children came to town to listen to Carl Swenson and PO Hedlund candidate for state auditor expound republican doctrine.

Argo: The Free church held a special convention. Gust Johnson and Mr. Gustofson (sic) of Oskaloosa, IA, and Sabina Johnson, a lady evangelist from Clay County, SD. attended.

Oscar Johnson, a young son of Claus Johnson, living six miles west of Oakland, was operated upon for appendicitis in Omaha.

John Anderson, a well known farmer living six or seven miles south of Oakland had a very narrow escape of being relieved of $1000. He drew the money from the bank, and headed home. A stranger asked for a ride, which Mr. Anderson provided. The stranger pulled a gun, and hit Mr. Anderson in the head. Mr. Anderson fought back, and along with the horses fleeing, interfered with the robber's plans.

Mrs. AJ Coleson was in town with her husband Visiting her parents, Mrs. Oke Johnson.
