Jan. 7, 1898

Miss Marie Johnson who was the guest of Robert Evans family the last of the week, returned home.

Alfred Ostrand returned from Kansas, where he had been on a visit for several days with friends.

Herman Johnson departed for Lindsburg, Kansas, where he goes to attend the Bethany college. A surprise party was thrown at his home, with $20 given him to help with schooling.

Mesdames AJ Colson and J. Lindell ended their week's visit with relatives here and returned to Omaha.

Miss Anna J. Anderson and Walter Johnson, were married at the bride's home by Rev. Swanberg, New Years day.

Mr./Mrs. Walter Johnson left for their new home at Wausa, where they will commence housekeeping and spend their honeymoon like sensible people.

Art Anderson was up from Tekamah. It is quite probably that himself and wife will become residents of this place soon.

Alvin Swanson joined the grammar dept. at school.

The remains of Mrs. Andrew Anderson were received from Emerson, Saturday evening, where she died the day before from blood-poisoning. Mrs. Anderson formerly lived here and was married to Mr. Anderson about one year ago. She leaves a baby one week old. The funeral took place from the Lutheran church Sunday and the remains were laid to rest in the Oakland Cemetery.

Mrs. CJ Lindell went to Tekamah yesterday to visit her daughter's family.

Jan. 14, 1898

JP Anderson, director of the Burt County Agricultural society for Oakland and Kerl twps, attended the meeting of the board at Tekamah.

PG Anderson took passage for Wausa, Monday.

Mrs. E. Anderson of Wakefield was called here by the illness of her father, August Olson.

John H. Anderson, new subscriber.

Mrs. Swan Johnson and her sister went to Omaha Tuesday, where they went to see Mr. Johnson who was taken to an Omaha hospital from West Point, by Cuming county authorities. His mind has been badly affected of late and is reported in a serious condition.

CJ Swanson, the merchant, and J. E. Blenkiron of Bancroft, left Tuesday morning for points in Missouri and other places south.

Theodore Anderson met with a decidedly unlucky injury. As he was nearing the Logan creek bridge on horseback, the animal shied and slipped, falling on the ice and breaking Mr. Anderson's leg in two places.

Swedish Lutheran church held annual business meeting. M. Swanson elected deacon for three years. M. Swanson as vice M Sunday school supt. CJ Johnson and Adolph Johnson Auditing committee. Usher, Sidney Swanson, John Anderson.

Pearl Swanson absent from first intermediate due to sickness. Mrs. JP Anderson visited.

Mrs. Gus. Johnson died Wednesday night after a long illness at the family home in Oakland. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn the loss of a kind wife and mother. Mr. Johnson has the sympathy of all his acquaintances in his loss. Funeral takes place from Lutheran church Sunday.

Mrs. Sarah Anderson's auction on the west side is the 8th of Feb.

Andrew Anderson came down from Emerson to be at the funeral of his little child.

Charley Johnson will remove to Texas and must sell off everything.

heirs of John F. Johnson received $2,000 from the insurance company.

O. Kjerte and wife of Laurel, are visiting Johnny Johnson's family this week.

CP Anderson returned from Wausa.

The little month-old boy baby of Andrew Anderson of Emerson, whose mother died at that place a couple of weeks ago, was buried here, passed away Sunday night and was buried by the side of its mother on Monday. The little one was being cared for by Mrs. Romberg of this place, and was doing quite nicely until an illness attacked it and soon carried it away to join the mother.

HC Wallerstedt of Perry, O.T. was shaking hands among his numerous old friends and visiting his relatives here the first of the week. He reports that Oklahoma has experienced a good season and that business in all lines has shown an improvement, as they had bounteous crops in what, corn and cotton. Henry went tot that country in the "boomer" days and has stood by it through its many adversities and we are glad to note he is succeeding. New subscriber

Mrs. Sarah Anderson having auction at her home 2 miles west of Oakland., selling off all personal property except household goods.

Charles A. Johnson, moving to Texas. Was living 2.5 miles west of Oakland on the old Elfstrand farm.

Feb. 4, 1898

Olof Anderson of Wausa was among his Oakland friends.

Miss Tillie Anderson went to Omaha Saturday.

Anton Anderson has gone to Wausa to take up his residence.

Grandma Lindell returned home after a visit in Tekamah with her daughter.

CA Johnson was rejoicing over the birth of a baby girl at his home the last of the week.

CJ Swanson returned the last of the week from his trip through Texas and other points of the south. It was an excellent trip.

Mrs. Abraham Anderson returned from her visit at Wahoo.

Charley Lundstrom is very sick.

John M. Johnson will moved to town and must sell off his farm stock, machinery, etc. before he comes. His sale is on Thursday, Feb. 17. He's located 7 miles NE of Oakland, and 7 miles N of Craig, and 80 rods from Grace Lutheran Church.

The Anderson boys, who have been absent from the city for 30 days, serving a jail sentence for purloining HA McCord's porker, came back to their old "stamping ground" Saturday. They report a "nice time," say they were fed well and that their lodging quarters were warm and cheerful.

Walter Johnson, a 11-year-old son of Mrs. JF Johnson ran into the bridge on Oakland Avenue, Monday eve, while coasting down hill and had his head badly cut open.

Pender: AJ Anderson and Chas. Johnson from Oakland both of whom visited with friends here, for about a week returned home. Mr. Johnson has a fine quarter section of land northwest of town which his boys will farm the next season.

Oscar Anderson, who is teaching school at Panama, near Lincoln, was up and spent Sunday with his Oakland friends and relatives.

Mrs. WA Harding returned from her visit in southern Nebraska and at Tarkio, Mo., and visited Mrs. DE Reese.

Frank Johnson and family came up from Dodge county, and visited their relatives, MW Johnson's family at the bakery. Mr. Johnson also rented the farm of Mr. Peterson near Swaburg and will soon move up and commence spring work.

Oliver Johnson and wife of Cedar county are here visiting old friends in the vicinity.

Rev. Jonas Johnson returned to Lincoln after assisting Rev. Hedlund in meetings at the Mission church last week.

A dispatch was received Tuesday evening by Mr. Wallerstedt announcing the serious illness of his son Henry at Perry, Oklahoma. He could not go on account of poor health, but his son FA Of Tekamah left for there. Henry was here only a couple of weeks back looking hearty and robust, but contracted a severe cold while on his way home which is feared will result fatal.

Swaburg: John Anderson of Bega, Stanton Co. is here visiting with friends and relatives. He will make a short stay.

Feb. 25, 1898

Nina Swanson up from Omaha to attend the funeral of Mrs. N. Olander.

Bouncing big girl baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. Olof Anderson, Tuesday night.

LP Johnson returned from Chicago where he has been for some time receiving medical treatment.

Alfred Johnson and wife and Oscar Lofvander returned to their home at Concord after a visit with NF Larson's family and others.

FA Wallerstedt came up from Tekamah. He recently returned from Perry, O.T., where he was called by his brother Henry's serious illness, and reports him much better.

John F. Westrand's auction is now over, and he will move into the Andrew Anderson residence.

Charles A. Johnson and wife left for Mobile, Alabama, near where they expect to locate. Mr. Johnson was one of our most successful farmers but owing to Mrs. Johnson's health he was obliged to sell out and move to a milder climate.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and Oscar Weander left for their home at Concord.

CJ Swanson in Blair with others to meet with the Knight Templars.

Miss Esther Johnson and Mrs. EW Harding visited the 1st intermediate last week. Oscar and Albert Johnson, both of them in 2nd Intermediate, left school due to work. Mrs. Swanson and Mrs. N. Johnson visited 1st Primary.

A Hammerstrom bought the property occupied by WA Harding and the old post office room adjoining.

Mar 4, 1898

SL Wallerstedt returned from Perry, O.T., Saturday, where he had been over a week at the bedside of his brother Henry, whom he left very much improved.

Swan Bengston and Andrew Anderson, two thrifty farmers east of Oakland, on Monday closed contracts with John M. Hanson for the erection of new residences. Work will start as spring opens.

John B. Lyon and Gust Johnson were down from Lyons Tuesday.

Miss Dena Johnson returned to her Omaha home after a brief visit.

Mar 11, 1898

Mrs. AM Anderson came up from Tekamah and made a brief visit with JP Anderson's family.

John A Swanson was in Omaha.

Mrs. Jennie Johnson closed a three week's visit with her parents and returned to her home in Omaha. Her husband was at Hot Springs, Ark. at the time.

Mrs. Ida Emelia Anderson, died Friday March 4th at the home of her other, Mrs. Samson, in Oakland, aged 21 years and 1 month, of lung fever. She leaves a husband and a little child about a month old, her mother, and a brother, Charles Samson, who is attending a medical college in Chicago. The deceased was buried at Swaburg, Sunday. Sermon by Rev. Falk, poem by AF Lofvander was read at the grave.

Ed Johnson kills a wild cat, 25 lb., in timber east of Elm Creed, Burt Co.

Swaburg: Frank Anderson, the store keeper, has been in Omaha several days, and is back again.

Mrs. Peter Anderson died and was buried in the Lutheran cemetery in Oakland.

School Notes: Albert Anderson of the 6th grade, and Alvin Swanson and John Swanson of the grammar dept. have left school, due to work.

CC Krogh and Miss Johnson drove to West Point, where they met a sister from the west, who will make a visit here.

Mrs. AK Anderson of Wisner has been visiting Oakland friends.

JP Anderson and daughter were Tekamah visitors.

Mrs. PJ Swanson of Thurston, was visiting Oakland relatives this week.

Alfred Johnson came down from Wausa to consult Dr. Sward about some of his ailments.

Olof Anderson returned from Wausa the last of the week, where he had been to help NE Polson get located in his new house.

Jurors Nels Anderson and Swan Johnson are in Tekamah, attending district court duties.

Johnny Johnson, the wagonmaker has ordered a bill of lumber and will begin building the second ward in a few days.

Amos Anderson left for Omaha to work in the future.

Miss Maud Anderson and Mr. Matts Anderson were married at the home of the grooms parents, 5 mi. north of Lyons on Sunday, Mar 13. Rev Johanson performed the ceremony. Miss Anderson is the daughter of PA Anderson of Swaburg.

Mrs. Anderson, who visited her sister, Mrs. CC Krogh, returned home to Wisner.

Johnny Johnson's place on the west side is almost finished.

Chas. Johnson, living out 6 miles on West Point road, an old and respected resident is reported quite low with pneumonia and that his physician had given him up.

AM Anderson, late county clerk, was elected city clerk of Tekamah. Oakland furnished them their mayor and clerk.

Mr. Swanberg united in marriage Mr. Leonard Peterson and Miss Louise Anderson at the residence of CN Nelson on Tuesday evening before a party of friends. The young couple left for their new home at Wausa.

Miss Dena Johnson visited 1st & 2nd Primaries and 1st Intermediate. Russell Johnson entered the 1st Primary Monday. Mr. JP Anderson visited the lower rooms.

Misses Lizzie and Minnie Johnson returned to Wausa, their father's health having improved somewhat.

Bell Creek: Young people gave Mr./Mrs. Wm. Johnson a party.

Bell Creek: Chas. Wickstrom, Joe Peterson, Wm. Johnson and Victor Bjork are talking of starting up a string band. Arthur Farley will instruct them.

Apr. 29, 1898

Miss Ellen Peterson and Annie Johnson returned from Omaha after visiting relatives there.

CG Anderson and son Charley departed for Minnesota, this week, where they will live in the future, and where John has been for some time. CG is an old landmark and will be missed.

Miss Hulda Stenberg and Gust Johnson , of Boyd Co., were united in marriage at the home of the bride's brother, Wed. afternoon. Rev. Johanson officiating.

Emerson: Andrew Anderson went to Omaha. He expects to work this summer with the gang that operates the steam shovel. Since the death of his wife, he has not felt contented in Emerson, and asked for and received a transfer by the railroad company.

May 6, 1898

Little girl arrived at Andrew Swenson's home on Wednesday.

Miss Esther Johnson came up from Tekamah to make a visit at home.

May 13, 1898

Baby boy born to Mr./Mrs. John C. Anderson on the 9th.

Frank Johnson over from West Point, shaking hands with friends.

John Swanson of Fremont, an old Oakland boy, was meeting friends here this week.

Oscar Samuelson made a trip to Fremont.

During the past week the family of Hans Johnson residing about 10 miles NW of Oakland has been nearly wiped out by that dread disease diphtheria, three children having died and the mother being quite low at present. Mother was taken down first, the oldest child was a 7 year old boy. A boy 3 years old, and a baby 4 weeks old. They will be buried in the ME Church cemetery on the west side.

GW Johnson and his band of trained dogs, gave two pleasing entertainments on our streets yesterday.

Gus Anderson was in Omaha over Sunday.

Mr./Mrs. DA Johnson of Wausa left for home Monday after spending several days here assisting the family of their brother Charles Johnson during that gentleman's illness and death.

Herman Johnson, who has been attending school for some months at Lindsburg, Kans., returned home.

Mrs. Johanna Swanson's house was struck by lightning and a chimney was wrecked, though no other damage was done to speak of.

Misses Helen Anderson and Sophia Johnson came down from Wakefield.

Mrs. PG Johnson returned yesterday from conference meeting at Valley.

Algete Johnson and Miss Freda Johnson were united in marriage by Rev. John Peterson at the bride's home on the west side yesterday.

Miss Nina Swanson came up from Omaha to visit with her family.

Sophia and Hanna Johnson came up from Blair where they were employed in FW Taylor's hotel Clifton.

John Anderson returned from a brief visit at Wasau.

John A Lindell came up from Omaha to visit.

Boy born to Mr./Mrs. August Johnson near Craig, on July 3. First child.

Rev. Johnson of Idaho Falls, Idaho, arrived yesterday and is a guest of Nels Anderson and family.

Mrs. Emil Anderson of Sioux City, was the guest of Mrs. A. Hammarstrom.

MR./Mrs. EA Harding were passengers to Omaha to visit the expo and friends.

Will Swanson and his side partner Tony Johnson came up from Omaha to visit their relatives.

Arthur Johnson was a passenger for Oakland.

Rev. Edward Johnson of Batavia, Ill., has been holding meetings in the west side Mission church since Tues.

John P. Anderson and wife and Oscar Samson were in Tekamah Wed.

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey A Harding arrived from Salem, Wis., Wed, where they were called on the sad mission of burying their little son. Mr. H. is now holding down a nice position in the state dept. at Washington. The family will remain a short time to visit Mr. H's folks and Mrs. H's brothers, C.K. and A.L. Cull. Mrs. WV Cull, mother of the Cull brothers, accompanied them and will remain a while.

Oakland Farmer's Union held their annual meeting at Wanberg's Hall July 5, 1898, electing OK Johnson, VP.

Mr./Mrs. Peter Nelson 3 miles of town, celebrated their silver wedding last Thursday, June 30. Their relatives, some of the old settlers and most intimate friends of the family being present. Mr. and JP Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. A. Johnson, Mr./Mrs. Israel Anderson, Mrs. Sarah Anderson.

Beemer: Mrs. JH Johnson returned from Newman Grove Monday evening where she was called by the illness and death of her brother's child.

John M. Johnson's and W. Hegglund's families hosted Miss Selma Larson of Cambridge, Ill. for a total of a month.

WA Harding and son Fred were in Omaha to review the 3rd regiment. Mr. H. has had plenty of military experience and has seen several large armies on review and wanted to see how the boys of '98 compared with the '61 and '65ers.

HA Harding bade his old Oakland friends good-bye and left for his duties at Washington, DC. Mrs. Harding and daughter will continue their visit a while longer.

Swaburg: Miss Hattie Johnson rode her wheel up from Fremont and passed the Sabbath with her parents.

Undertaker of Galesburg, Ill., Fred A. Dean, is announcing the death of a John Johnson, who supposedly has a brother living in Oakland named John Peterson.

Sherman Anderson and others fitted out a rig and left Monday Morning on a 10 days hunting trip west to Wheeler Co.

Mrs. Anna G. Erickson, died Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. NA Anderson on the west side. Mrs. Erickson one of the oldest people in the county, having been born in 1805. She was mother of 7 children, 5 still living: Mr. NP Erickson, JW Erickson, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. NP Anderson all of Oakland, and Mrs. Ringstrom of Kansas city, Mo.

Andrew G. Anderson died at his home in Omaha, Monday of appendicitis after an illness of one week. He had been ailing for some time, but nothing serious was thought until an examination was had. Mr. Anderson was well known in Oakland, where he formerly lived and was in the clothing business for some time. He also clerked in several stores in town. Mr. Anderson's wife was visiting here a week ago, and returned to find her husband ill.

Sept. 16, 1898

OH Anderson, an Oakland boy who will reside in Lincoln for the next several months, have ordered the Independent to their address.

Mrs. John Anderson of Denver, Colo., a sister of Mrs. CO Jonas family, joined Mr. Jonas' family at Omaha and came to Oakland to enjoy a visit.

Arthur Johnson and sister Mrs. O. Hanson, left for Lincoln, Monday morning where Arthur will take up his studies at the state university.

AG Johnson is another young man from Oakland who will attend the state university.

Mrs. Pearson, after a visit with her mother, Mrs. AG Anderson, has returned to her home in Denver.

Oak Johnson went to Omaha to visit his daughter Mrs. Colson a few days and take in the expo.

Mrs. John A Swanson went to Omaha where she spent a few days visiting her husband and children who are living there this summer.

Fred Anderson of Bishop Hill, Illinois, visited Fred Tunberg's family this week.

Mrs. Swan Johnson of the west side was called to Council Bluffs by the sad news that her husband was growing worse since an operation had been performed on him in a hospital there.

John Swanson entered the 7th grade. Raymond Johnson of 1st grade returned after several weeks absence. Sydney Swanson was a high room visitor last week.

Adolph Johnson and family arrived from Chicago, and will take up their residence here. Mr. Johnson is a brother of Mrs. J. Newlean and formerly lived here.

PJ Johnson is a shoeman.

OH Anderson is teaching the school in the Palmquist district west of town and will not return to Lincoln at present. Graduated from Oakland schools.
