Editor’s Note: the following is the Franklin County Historical News printed in the March 12, 1931 edition of the Bloomington Advocate

“ Charles R. Potter, the only living veteran and past veteran and past commander of Van Meter Post in Alma, observed his 92nd birthday March 3, 1931. He was born in New York and came west to Chicago in 1858, then a very small place surrounded by dikes on Lake Michigan to keep the water out of the city. He remained in the state of Illinois and worked at various occupations. He heard the famous speeches of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in 1860 in Ottawa, Il.

“He married Miss Jennie McGoull, December 22, 1870. In the winter of 1874 he came to Red Cloud and built the first frame house in the county on a farm which was his home for five years and the house is still standing and in use. In 1879 they moved to Harlan County and lived on a homestead and timber claim, built a house and store east of Ragan, which the settlers called the Freewater Store.

“Mr. Potter has resided in Alma a number of years, is member of the First M. E. Church, and enjoys good health and his radio. He has five children, fifty great grandchildren, other relatives and a large circle of friends.”

Bright summer goes, dark winter comes, and we cannot rule the year.
