James Shanahan
Axtell resident, 74

Kearney -- James R. “Jim” Shanahan, 74 of Axtell died Friday, May 23, 2003 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Prince Peace Catholic Church in Kearney with the Revs. Mike McDonald and Tom Ryan officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Axtell. Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and before services tonight and Tuesday at the church. Wake services will be at 7 tonight at the church.
He was born Jan. 12, 1929 on the family farm northwest of Axtell to Richard and Grace (Filbin) Shanahan. He was a 1949 graduate of Axtell High School.
On Oct. 25, 1954 he married Delta Murphy in Holdrege. They farmed northwest of Axtell until they retired in 1984.
He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and the Eagles.
Survivors include his wife of Axtell; daughters, Jean Carranza of Colorado Springs, Colo and Mary Stubbs and Katy Shiers, both of Kearney; sons, Jim of Axtell and Richard of Washington, DC; sisters, Mary Young of Pico Rivera, Cal. and Helen Strasburger of Broomfield, Colo; seven grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a grandson, a brother and a sister.

Reese Slack
Minden resident, 90

Minden - Reese Slack, 90 of Minden died Tuesday July 29, 2003 at Bethany Home in Minden.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Berke Landrum officiating. Burial of cremains will be at Minden Cemetery before the services.
There will be no visitation.
Layton Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of arrangements.
He was born April 4, 1913 in Minden to Johnson and Bertha (Ramick) Slack.
He graduated from Minden High School.
On April 21, 1940 he married Grace Johnson in Minden.
He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater in World War II. He received a Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters.
After he returned from the service, he owned and operated Slack Super Service until he retired in 1979.
He was a member of the church in Minden and of American Legion Post 94 in Minden.
Survivors include his wife; son, Doug of Portland, Ore. daughter Meredith Lundgren of Minneapolis; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
