Seward County, Nebraska Cemeteries
Death was a fact of life for early settlers. In Nebraska and Seward County,
the first pioneers and travelers through the area who
died here may have been buried in a spot on the prairie.
The first reported death was of homesteader Father Dunway in September of 1864
who was living on Section 3 in G Precinct. A neighbor, Grandfather
Imlay, went to visit his friend, Father Dunway, and found
Dunway's body on a patch of grass. Authorities were notified. A coroner's jury
was rounded up in short order and an inquest held. It was determined
that the death was due to natural causes. A rough board coffin was
constructed of lumber taken from the cabin and, according to Seward County, Nebraska
by John H. Waterman: "the remains of Father Dunway were laid to rest beneath
an oak tree by the light of misty moon beams." His goods and chattles
were turned over to his wife upon her arrival.
The Seward County Genealogical Society inventory indicates that there are 17 abandoned
cemeteries and 34 active cemeteries in the county. Reports have been
received of several lone graves, but they have not been verified.
The society has a data base with every known burial in the county.
On the table, "m." stands for "miles" and "n.", "e.", "s.", "w." stands for the
direction from the nearest town.
