Seward County, Nebraska Military

Many men and women who lived, or came to live, in Seward County served their country. The Homestead Act of 1862 provided Civil War veterans with land to farm. Sons of the county served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and more. Citizens sought to honor them, care for them and continue to remember them. An early Soldiers and Sailors Home was located in Milford and many residents of the home are buried in Blue Mound Cemetery there. The Nebraska National Guard Museum is located in Seward. In addition to displays, it has an archive with information about those who served with the Guard beginning in the Civil War.

Local newspapers carried information about those who served - from enlistment to burial. Local newspapers have been digitized and can be found on the Seward Memorial Library website. The Seward County Genealogical Society has scrapbooks with information about service men and women. The Seward County Historical is a good resource as well. All have Facebook pages.
