Mt. Freedom Presbyterian Church
Morris County, New Jersey

Morris Co. Up

The Mt. Freedom Presbyterian Church is located in Randolph Twp., Morris County, New Jersey on Church Road & Sussex Turnpike, and according to The History of Morris County published by Munsell, the Mt. Freedom Presbyterian Church is the exact center of Mt. Freedom.

This traditional wooden building was put up in 1828, and enlarged in 1867-71. It has an emphasized pediment, which is probably a product of the later construction, but otherwise is about as plain a building as you are likely to find—and in that respect, fairly typical of the early churches in sparsely-settled areas. The congregation was organized in 1820.

This building is listed in the National Register.

Mt. Freedom Presbyterian Church was organized July 9th 1820, by the Rev. Samuel H. Cox, of Mendham, and Rev. Jacob Green, of Succasunna, who were appointed a committee for this purpose by the Presbytery of Jersey.

Rev. James McMurray, ordained and installed pastor January 6th 1847, and continued in the pastorate till 1856.

Rev. Abram Williamson succeeded Mr. McMurray in 1856, and remained in charge of the church till March 1867.

Rev. Elias R. Fairchild, D. D., who though never formally installed served the church till 1871; during his ministry there the church edifice was enlarged and improved, and many were added to the church.
