John Thomas SCHWALLIE

John Thomas Schwallie, 82, of Sardinia, died March 17, 2000 at Good Samaritan Hospital after a short stay. He was born on March 15, 1918 near Ripley, Ohio, the son of John F. and Ann (Fritz) Schwallie. He lived all of his life in Brown County except for the time he spent in the US Army in World War II, where he served in North Africa, Italy and Bavaria with the 36th Division. He was a Charter Member fo Post 755, Geo. A. Lambert American Legion where he had just been presented with a 50 year membership certificate. He was the manager of the former Equity Dairies in Sardinia, retiring in 1979 after 40 years.

On April 16, 1941, he was married to Idella Weber and their union lasted 54 years until her death on Feb. 16, 1996. All his life he managed to spend as much time as possible doing the thing he loved best, farming with his sons and grandsons. He is survived by his daughter, Linda and her husband Gary of Summerside, three sons, Karl and his wife, Diana of Sardinia; Dale and his wife, Tammy of Sardinia; and Jerry and his wife, Jane of Brownstown; ten grandchildren, Debbie, Emily & Darin of Summerside, Kyle of Sardinia and Kristina (Schwallie) Kratzer of Georgetown, Stephanie, Kevin and Lisa of Brownstown and Brent and Chance Wolffram of Sardinia and one great grandson

He is also survived by four sisters: Leora Yockey and Mary Frances Fetters of Russellville, Ohio, Theresa Moore of West Union, Ohio and Ruth Wenzel of Cincinnati, Ohio and two brothers George and Charles of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Idella; infant son, Joseph; his parents, John and Anna; and two brothers, Robert and Joe.

Funeral services were held on March 20 at St. Mary's Church in Arnheim under the direction of Beam-Fender Funeral Home with Father Dohrman W. Byers officiating. Visitation was Sunday evening at the funeral home with the Geo. A. Lambert American Legion holding services followed by a prayer service by Father Byers. A military funeral service was held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Arnheim. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary's Cemetery fund or the American Legion Gift to Yanks Fund.
