Looking for information on James Martin, born around 1810, he died in 1846 or 1847 in Sistersville, Virginia (now WV). He had been married to Melissa Ann Atkinson. Melissa came back to Jefferson County from Sistersville after her husband died. She was pregnant with their daughter, Nancy Martin, who was born in 1846 or 47. In 1847, Melissa Ann Martin married Asa Travis. They are listed in the 1850 Jefferson County, Ohio census, along with her daughter, Nancy and her son, Leman Martin (my great-great grandfather.) In short, I'm looking for the parents of my great-great grandfather, Leman (Leamon) Wherry Martin. All I know is they are James Martin and his wife, Melissa Ann Atkinson. Please help me get over my brick wall.

Thanks in advance!! Susan Guy

NOTE:After a 70 year long family search the mystery of Melissa Ann has been solved with this brick wall crumbling down! With the maiden name of Melissa found and proven, it opens a whole new door to my research. I am still searching for my grandfather, James Martin's family and know that he also will be found and connected with the help from others as I did Melissa. Thanks to all who have helped with this! Anyone that may connect with the Atkinson family, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

In researching my family history, I have found "George Adare" (hopefully, one of my Gr Gr Gr Grandfathers) in Cross Creek, Jefferson, OH in the 1820 census. He was born in PA in 1797. He is also in Cross Creek in the 1830 census, this time with the modern spelling of his name, "Adair". If this is the right person, his full name would be George Lee Adair. If I have the right George Adair, his wife's maiden name would be Mary McKee. She was born in 1798, but I have no proof of where. I do find an Alexander McKee (of about the right age to be Mary's father) in the 1820 census in Cross Creek, with two daughters in Mary's age range, so you can see that I am very optimistic that I have the right people. George Lee Adair and Mary McKee had their first child, James Lee Adair, in 1821 in Ohio. The main piece of information I am searching for right now is a record of the marriage of George Lee Adair and Mary McKee. I am thinking that it probably took place in Jefferson County in the period of about 1814 to 1821.

Any information you can provide to me on either of these families would be greatly appreciated. Charles Young

I'm looking for information about Richard Spurrier, b. abt 1815, Md (or possibly Ohio)., d. aft 1880 in Morgan Co., Ohio. He married in Jefferson Co., 1835, at the home of Benjamin Hall, Eliza (or Elizabeth) Spurrier, evidently a cousin. Her parentage is partly known, his is not. The family then moved on to Morgan Co. where their first child was born in 1836.
There was a Richard Spurrier who purchased land in Jefferson Co. in 1813. A man by that name appears in the 1820 Census there. My Richard is neither of these; he was scarcely born or a small child on those dates. He is known not to be the the son of the Richard born 1784 who married Elizabeth Weeden. All of that man's children have been accounted for (unless there was an unrecorded birth). Similarly, he is not the Richard, b. 1812, who married Amy Barrett and went out to Iowa. That man's kids have been accounted for also.
Does anyone recognize the guy born abt 1815 or the earlier Richard who appeared in 1813? Or possibly the Amelia Spurrier who married in Jefferson Co., 1818, Nathaniel Leary or Leacy?

All help welcome! Laura Spurrier

Martha Eliza. Springer DAVIS LOCKHART was b. approx. 1854 to Jacob Springer and Nancy Johnson Springer. She married Pierce Davis in Washington Co., OH in 1871. They had five children (Josiah, Amanda, Eva, Rosita, Jacob) and she and Davis divorced in 1896 in Brooke Co., WV. She then married Edward R. Lockhart. In 1907 Lockhart murdered Davis in Brooke Co. and took off (according to the July 1907 newspapers). Martha Lockhart is listed as a widow and waitress in the 1910 census for Toronto, Jefferson County, along with her son-in-law Earnest McKinley and daughter Rosita McKinley and their children. I have been unable to find any information on Martha (my great-grandmother) after that time. Did she remarry? Did she die?

Any help would be appreciated. Karen Davis Newstead

NOTE:This brick wall came tumbling down on July 4, 2009, after my researcher sister Melanie Pike was using the www.familysearchlabs.org site and decided to type in "Mattie" for the first name and nothing for the surname, "Springer" as her father's name, clicked on Death Records and Ohio for the death place. Up came seven "Exact and close matches". Looking at the birthdates, Melanie was disappointed and then saw one for 1 April 1857, which was close to Martha's birthdate. The name was MARTHA ELIZA LUCARD. Parents: Father: Jakob Springer (we had it as "Jacob". Mother: Nancy Johnson This was our Martha!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lucard and Lockhart aren't too far apart in pronunciation, are they? We now know she died of nephritis on 2 January 1917 at age 59 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. We don't know why she was there but know she is buried in Woodland Cemetery. After seven years facing this brick wall, it has crumbled!!!!!!!!!!! Now onto the next one! Karen and Melanie

FISHER, Solomon and Stephen. Both men moved to Jefferson County between 1800 to 1806. Both married in Jefferson County, Ohio. Both left for Wayne County, Ohio in 1814. The online marriage records are great and I found both men. Does anyone have access to deeds that I could get copies of and that may tell where they were from when they purchased land in Jefferson County? I believe that the two men are related somehow. The Fishers are also related to the Watkins who also moved to Wayne County, Ohio. Are there any plat maps for Jefferson County dated before 1814, that would indicate where the property the Fishers owned was located? Solomon Fisher was involved with the whiskey rebellion in Pennsylvania. And Stephen seems to have married twice within a couple years of each other. He is storied to have married an Indian girl in Virginia. Elizabeth was the wife he took to Wayne County. Her name does not sound Indian to me. Online information without fact gives the Indian girl's name as Comstock Logenslatter. Help...

Thank You Jerry

My Nathaniel DEVAULT was b 1806 in "Green Twp, Harrison Co, OH", but this would have been Jefferson Co at that time. I believe his parents were George W. DEWALT and Elizabeth EMERY who came to the area in the early 1800s from PA possibly via VA. I have extensive descendant information on the son Nathaniel who lived most of his adult life in Belmont Co, but have been unable to find anything other than "family history" on his alleged parents nor anything on possible siblings. To date I've had no luck in Harrison Co. Can anyone help?

Thanks Sharon

I am looking for information on Benjamin Ellsworth Hardy, born July 13, 1905. All I know is that he came from a family of 13 brothers and sisters. One of his sisters I remember was Katherine who would have been somewhere around his age. Another brother I met when I was 5 was John. He had black lung disease from working in the coal mines. My grandfather Benjamin lost all of his brothers to the mines. All I was told was that Maybe they mined in a town called New West VA in Ohio. His hometown ended in Ville. vineville, dillionvale, wellsville. I found a census record from Jefferson County Ohio and I think that maybe that was where he was born. Does anyone know of a town that had a coal mine named new west va near any county in Ohio? I am an artist and have been doing reasearch here in Illinois (Kankakee, Grundy, Livingston, Will counties) on a ghost town called Cardiff. I would like to honor those in my family for their immense bravery and dedication to America for working and giving literally, their lives to the mines. History is so important, and if someone out there could help me, I would be willing to help research Kankakee county Illinois for them

MCMILLIN, Harvey E. - According to his military papers he was born in Jefferson Co, OH or Carroll Co, OH on 26 SEP 1831. (note: since Carroll Co. didn’t exist until 1833, I would go with Jefferson) On 15 JAN 1853 he purchased two lots of land in Martin Co, IN using a Land Warrant he purchased from Robert SHERRARD Jr. that was originally assigned to George TAYLOR. He sold one of these lots to Jacob JENNINGS (formerly of Jefferson, OH) on 31 MAR 1860. He married Barbary Jane NOLAND 20 AUG 1859 in Daviess, IN and died 23 NOV 1907 in Terre Haute, IN. Harvey was a volunteer substitute in the Civil War (IN company.)
My problem is that I have every record possible for Harvey, but I cannot locate him in the 1850 census and I have no idea who his parents are. If the naming pattern on his children hold true, his parents would be Mary and James.

Thank You! Jennifer

I'm researching the Joseph Fleming family from Jefferson County, Ohio. Joseph and Priscilla Fleming and their 10 children are listed in the 1850 census for Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. We know that Joseph and Priscilla died before 1860 and their children are found in various households in the 1860 census for Jefferson County, Ohio. The children scattered across Ohio and other states during and after the Civil War. Priscilla Fleming was the daughter of James and Jane (Rannells) Gaddis from Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The ancestry of James Gaddis and Jane Rannells is fairly well documented. Joseph's brother, John Fleming, lived in Clinton County, Ohio, well past the Civil War. Although the census lists their birthplace as Virginia, we believe that they lived in Fayette County, Pennsylvania before settling in Ohio. We are not able to find any more information about (1) exactly when Joseph and Priscilla died and where they were buried and (2) the ancestry of Joseph Fleming.

Any information about this Fleming family of Jefferson County, Ohio would be appreciated. Thanks Mark

My ancestor(s) Thomas White and Zachariah Prichard presented letters to Mount Moriah Baptist church in 1817 from Thumb Run church in Fauquier Co., VA. (Thomas was Zachariah's father-in-law-married Thomas's daughter Susanna White in Fauquier Co circa 1804). Thomas later removed to Licking County. However, in 1817 he was approximately 64 years old and should have had additional adult children. Would like to connect with any White (or Prichard) relatives in the Jefferson Co, OH area. Believe Thomas may have intended to settle in Jefferson Co as he had taken the initiative to become attached to the above mentioned church.

Thank You Sharon

Looking for information on JOHN MARTIN b. ?. He married SARAH MICHENER February 1, 1810, in Jefferson Co., Ohio. She was a Quaker born 1789 in Chester Co., Pa. and was disowned, married contrary to discipline. They had two children in Short Creek, Ohio: M JOHN MARTIN or MARTIN JOHN MARTIN b. 1811 and PAUL A MARTIN b. 1813. Sometime between 1813 and 1815 they moved to Tuscarawas, Ohio and had 7 more children: ELIZABETH b. 1815, HANNAH S b. 1817, DANIEL M b. 1819, BYER B b. 1822, MARY A b. 1825, SUSANNAH b. 1828 and KINSEY b. 1831. Sarah died 1836 in Morrow Co., Ohio. I, along with so many other people, am desperate for information on where John came from. It almost seems as though he just appeared out of nowhere. I have had no luck finding marriage records because I don't know what religion they practiced. I did find John in the 1820 U.S. Census in Sugar Creek Twp., Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. In all the census records I have found from their children, Johns birthplace varies (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Germany). I'm afraid I have run out of places to look.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank You Angie

Looking for the parents of JOHN S MARTIN born Aug, 1777 somewhere in Pennsylvania. He married SARAH MICHENER near Short Creek, Jefferson County in February 1810. See post above from Angie. The family lived in Jefferson Co for at least 3 years. We need to know what churches were in operation in 1810 to 1813 in the area between Short Creek and Steubenville. Then need to locate baptismal records for their children. They were married by Justice of the Peace JOHN WATSON. Also, any info on John Watson and where his JP records are would be very helpful. Children born in Short Creek -- Jefferson Co were MARTIN JOHN MARTIN born February 1811 and PAUL ASHLEY MARTIN born February 1813.

I am looking for the parents of my ancestor David R. Price and his siblings Sarah, James and Louisa all born between 1818 and 1829. James was born in 1826 in Jefferson County, Ohio. Extensive research has been done in all the usual places for names of their parents, but the family has been at a brick wall for years. In a census record, the parents birthplace is given as Ohio. No other information was given about them. Any help would be so very appreciated in solving this mystery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Marie

I am trying to locate the parents of Frank W. Martin. He married Anna M. Alban of Steubenville in 1893 and they had one child, Frank L. Martin born 20 Feb 1898 in Steubenville. The 1900 and 1910 census records show that Frank W. Martin was born in Indiana and his parents were born in Pennsylvania. The family story is that Frank L. Martin left home in his mid-teens and only returned once at the request of his wife, Urith E. Johnson (or Johnston). She wanted to meet his family, but he wanted to see if things were still the same before he introduced her to his family. Upon his return, he was not going to introduce his wife to his family. The 1910 census record shows they moved to Fostoria, Seneca County, Ohio. My grandmother says that Frank L. Martin passed away about 1958 or 1959 and is buried in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in a family plot. I haven't located this record yet. Does anyone have the missing pieces to my puzzle?

Believe his parents may be Michael Thomas Fisher and Christina but cannot source yet. He was in VA or WestVA around 1844 when his first child Helen Catherine is born but back in Steubenville in 1850. He was a carpenter and had a flat boat license.

Would love help on this Pamela

Dalrymple/Dalrimple families who emigrated from Washington County, PA to Jefferson County, OH. I have been unable to find the parents or siblings for Lewis Dalrymple/Dalrimple (1794-1843). Any small bit of information would be helpful. Siblings births could be 1790-1810. Lewis married Mary Headley/Headly. They had four children: John, Ira, Elvira, and Pamela. Many family members are buried in New Alexandria.

Would appreciate any help or information. Thank you Leslie

Newell Family - Porter Newell and his wife, Elizabeth were in Jefferson County, OH at the same time as Selina Louisa Newell was born - 1826. I have been unable to make the connections in this family. Porter Newell is shown as one of the witnesses on the marriage license for Selina to John Dalrymple.

Looking for information on Richard and Mary Newsam/Newsom, of Steubenville, Jefferson Co., Ohio. Richard bought land in Steubenville in the late 1790s when it was still Northwest Territory. He and Mary had children: William, George, John, Rachel, Elizabeth and Alfred. Richard died in 1809 in Steubenville, and will names his wife and children. His plots were in the town of Steubenville and a large number of small debts owing to him were listed in the inventory of his estate, so I infer he was a tradesman or artisan, possibly a blacksmith. Mary remarried to William Driskill, and moved to Indiana with the three youngest children.

Would appreciate any help or information on this. Thank you Eric

I have been looking for info on Leander Chads Galloway, born in Jefferson Country, possible Island Creek, Ohio on March 10, 1843. His dad was Thomas Galloway and mother Sarah Galloway. My brick wall is with his grandfather, Joseph Galloway. He changed his name from Golway. Believe he may have come to America around 1783.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
