Virginia Bell


DILLONVALE - Virginia Bell, 63, of 341 Township Road died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997, in Wheeling Hospital.

She was born March 21, 1933, in Rinehart, W. Va., a daughter of the late Albert and Bertha Swiger Vandruff. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Eli "Rocky" Bell; a son, Mark, and a granddaughter.

She was Methodist by faith.

Surviving are four sons, Herbert Devore of Hopedale, Gary Devore of New Alexandria, Albert Devore of Smithfield and Rick Bell of Barnesville; three daughters, Rebecca Eltringham of Hopedale and Brenda Posey and Janet Bell, both of Belmont; two brothers, Thomas Vandruff of Smithfield and John Vandruff of Arizona; two sisters, Ernestine Wiley of Rush Run and Doris Beard of East Liverpool; 26 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St. Services will be held there Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Jack Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.

William Bickerstaff Obituary

William Bickerstaff--After Living six years beyond four score William Bickerstaff usually called "Uncle Billy" died at 4:30 Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs Mary Kidd on South Fifth street, aged 96 years, 1 month and eight days. He was born on the "Widow Bair" farm in Cross Creek township on February 14th, 1807. He was the son of Augustine and Eliza Bickerstaff and was the last of the members of his family who were among the early settlers in this section being pioneer Methodists and Democrats. He was married in 1829 to Susan Holmes of Tuscarawas county. His wife after a long happy and blessed union of 54 years survives her husband with nine children. They are Augustine and Enos of this city, Ellis of McKeesport, William N, John and Lewis of this city, Mrs Mary Kidd of this city, Elizabeth Nelson and Ann Curfman of Steubenville township. He was at the time of his death a member of Finley M E cahpel and he had been a member of the Methodist church for 52 years. He had always been a very devout man, firm to his doctrines both religious and political. As a Democrat he never swerved from the glorious principles of the party he has voted with since 1828. He was held in highest esteem by our people who had the fullest confidence in his integrity.

William L. Bishop Obituary

William L. Bishop 74, Dies at Baltimore


William L. Bishop of Evansville, Indiana, former resident of Mingo Junction, died suddenly due to a heart attack, at the Pennsylvanis Railroad station at Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday morning. He had been visiting his two daughters at Baltimore, and was coming to visit his daughter Mrs. Noel M. Hauck, 121 Shamrock Avenue, Mingo Junction.

He was 74 years of age September 2, 1942. He was born in Malaga, Monroe county, the son of James Milton and Sarah Oblinger Bishop, later residents of Mingo Junction and both deceased. He was first married to Cora F. Uptegraft deceased. Children surviving this union were Mrs. N. M. Hauck; Mrs. W. F. Schilling and Miss Mary Bishop at Baltimore; a sister Mrs. Clara Rose at Columbus; three brothers Thomas of Steubenville; Leon at Seattle; Charles at California; two granddaughters and two great grandsons.

He was employed as a railroader in the Carnegie plant yards at Mingo Junction 1905-1931, but is retired on a pension. His second wife who was Myra Uptegraft survives and resides in Evansville. His body was brought to the McClave funeral home and later taken to the home of his daughter Mrs. Hauck at Mingo Junction.

Post Office Official Dies


Ravenna, Ohio--Services for Ravenna Postmaster Francis E. Bisson will be Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church here.

Bisson, 58, died Wednesday at his home.

Edward S Boggs died at his home, 904 Lincoln Avenue on Thursday at 3:45 pm. He had taken ill on Saturday, but he had been in poor health for a year. He was born at Bellaire and he would have been 69 years of age on November 9. He had lived here since childhood. He was a retired operative potter, giving up active work five years ago. He was married to Elizabeth Nelson, 49 years ago and his widow survives with these children, Mrs. Cora Linn and Ray S, of Mineral Ridge; John N and Mrs Clara Stark of Steubenville; Mrs Alice Lewis of Cleveland; Mrs Raymond Bernert of Steubenville. He was the last to survive of his family. He was a member of Finley M.E. church and the Potters' Brotherhood. He was an industrious and respected citizen.

Mrs. Elizabeth Boggs, 89, of 940 Lincoln Ave. died at 4 pm Friday in the Riverview Nursing Home. She had been ill 10 years, seriously ill three days and a patient six months. She was born March 16, 1870 in Steubenville, the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Bickerstaff Nelson. Mrs Boggs was a member of Finley Methodist Church. Her husband, Edward Boggs died in 1936. Mrs Boggs leaves one son, Ray Boggs of Youngstown; four daughters, Mrs. A. M. Lynn of Youngstown, Mrs. P. H. Lewis of Cleveland and Mrs Ray Bernert and Mrs Robert Stark, both of Steubenville; 23 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A son, a brother, a sister and three grandchildren preceded her in death. Friends may call at the Cole Bros. Funeral Home from 7 pm to 9 pm today and from noon to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm Sunday. Funeral services will be at 11 am Monday in the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. J. Lloys McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

John N. Boggs of 106 Langley Ave died at Weatherford Hospital in Oklahoma, Friday at 10 pm. He was returning from Norwalk, California. Mr Boggs suffered a stroke in Weatherford on Tuesday and never regained consciousness. He had been a member of LaBelle View Methodist Church, American Legion and International Brotherhood of Electrical workers. He served in World War I. He was born in Steubenville on April 4, 1893, a son of Mrs. Elizabeth Boggs and the late Edward Boggs. Surviving is his widow, Ruth Finley Boggs; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Boggs; a son, Bruce John Boggs of the home; s step-daughter, Mrs. William D. Smith of Norwalk, Calif.; a brother, Ray Boggs of Youngstown; four sisters, Mrs. Cora Linn of Youngstown, Mrs. Alice Lewis of Cleveland, Mrs. Clara Stark and Mrs. Mary Bernert of Steubenville. The body will arrive in Steubenville on Tuesday and will be removed to McClave Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Mrs Ruth Yocum Boggs, 57, of 106 Langley Ave., died at 7:35 am Saturday in the West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. She had been in failing health the past year and hospitalized eight weeks. She had resided in Steubenville all her life and for 17 years was secretary of the Fort Steuben Area Council of the Boys Scouts of America. She later was employed at the Union Savings Bank and Trust Co., where she had worked five years. Mrs Boggs was a member of the First Christian Church. She was a past chairman of the Public Welfare Department of the Steubenville Woman's Club and held membership in the Young Woman's Christian Association. She leaves behind a daughter, Mrs Bette Finley Smith, a son, Bruce J. Boggs and three gandchildren, Mark Smith, Debra Smith and Pamela Smith, all at home and a sister, Mrs Denzel (Dorthory)Perkins of Beatrice Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her husband, John N. Boggs, 1950. Mrs Boggs was born Sept. 20, 1905, in Steubenville, a daughter of the late John W. and Alice Dunbar Yocum. Friends may call at the McClave Funeral home from 2pm to 4 pm and 7pm to 9pm today and Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 3pm Wednesday in the McClave Chapel. The Rev. Mr. George Crenshaw will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
