I am looking for the parents of William Gilchrist ( who married Ruth Linton ) and his brothers, Sam and Ed. Research so far has led me to believe that their parents are Henry Gilchrist and Sarah Busey who were married in Jefferson Co. in 1806. Henry may have come from Maryland and Sarah is the daughter of Charles and Martha Busey of Jefferson Co. The 1850 census has an 82-year old Sarah living with Ed and Mary Gilchrist (misspelled Gillgrist). All my evidence is circumstantial and I would greatly appreciate any information that would either prove or disprove my theory. Thanks for your help.

I'm looking for whatever I can find about my grandparents. Both wre longterm residents in Steubenville.

He is Carl Craig Summerville, born in Rimmersburg. Clarion, PA on 19 Apr 1893. She is Annie (nee Eddie or McAnsh), born 23 Mar 1893 in Glasgow. She came to over in 1905. They married in Ocalla, Marion, FL in 1917, Carl's parents had moved there.

Carl served in WW I in the 124th Infantry. Around the time of his discharge (1919) he moved to Steubenville, where he and Annie lived and died.

Annie died in January, 1961 or 1962. Carl died on 13 Jun 1970 and was buried on the 17th in the Union Cemetary.I'd guess Annie is there, too.

Carl was postmaster for a while, if I remember a conversation with my mum correctly. They were both Masons, he was a high degree Knights Templar and she was a member of the Eastern Star. I think they were quite active in the community while my gran was alive. I know they made their own beer, and Annie made dandelion wine and other herbal brews.

They had three daughters, Hazel, Jessie, and Caroline. Caroline died at age 6, on 17 Jun 1934. Jessie (mum) is still alive, but quite old. Hazel died a few years back, I believe. Mum and Aunt Hazel didn't get on.

Mum couldn't remember which year her mum died. I was about 10. I never got to know my grandparents well, as we lived on the other side of the country. I'll probably get some documents on them when mum dies, but I'd love to learn what I can. I'm not sure exactly where they lived, but it was a big old weatherboard house kinda near the edge of town. I was only about 8 at the time I visited, so it would have been the edge of town around 1959.

I'm living in Australia, and have been here over 20 years. I probably won't get back there in a hurry. If I could get some information that would be wonderful. I'm putting together a genealogy, and have a fair bit. I'd be happy to send it on, but am trying to get a little bit tidied up. It sounds really stupid to say I don't know when my grandmother died, but I know all about her great-great grandmother. It just seems a lot easier to get info pre-1905. I'd love to get their address, too.

Thanks,

I live in Silver Spring, Maryland, and am currently researching my lineage under the Joseph surname. I am fairly confident my ancestors include the family of Moses Joseph who was age 57 in 1870, and has a family unit living in Island Creek and Knox townships, respectively. The census record goes back to a Mary Joseph in 1830 and a Michael Joseph in 1820 (possibly Mary's husband). I would greatly appreciate any birth or death information for these two or their families. By 1880 the Josephs in Jefferson County seem to have disappeared. I am seeking any information that would suggest where this three generation family might have relocated after 1870. I am particularly interested in find out where son William Joseph (age 9 in 1870) ended up, as he appears to be my great grandfather. If he is the correct William Joseph, he would have married an Elizabeth Brittain from Greene, Beaver Co. Pennsylvania between 1880 and 1890.

Can you advise me? There was a Middletown Township which was apparently " taken off" after Warren Township was" taken off " in 1797 to form what was in 1797 Jefferson County, Northwest Territory and in 1803 the 1st Ohio census reflects that there was a James Applegate living in Middletown Township. Apparently means " done away with" or what? Nevertheless can you tell me in detail what encompassed the subject township? Apparently James Applegate was one of Jefferson"s 1st citizens but I see no reference in your site to reflect that info. Among other things can you tell me if you know whether there was white oak lumbering going on in Jefferson Co. say in 1790 -1803? I am searching for information about James Applegate who undoubtably came from Forward Township, Allegheny Co., Pa. before say 1801, an estimate , and may have been involved in shipbuilding, maybe even Jefferson's ship which was used to go up the Missouri river.

I am looking for information concerning John McFarland and/or his wife Martha Bonney McFarland. They were married c1861 in Steubenville; he served with the 1st Regiment of OVI, company H. I have a diary which he kept from 1866 - 67, in which he describes his work as an engineer on the trains and boats in the PA, OH, WV area, as well as a journey he made to Cuba looking for work.

Two children, Bertha and Lillian were born of this union. It would appear that John McFarland died s/time between 1867 - 70?, as Martha remarried a man named Cowen. By 1878, she, too, was dead (probate letters making the girls wards of John Kithcart and authorized sale of property Lot 26, No. 5, located in the Nicholson's addition to city of Steubenville.)

Martha McFarland Cowen purchased a cemetery plot in Union Cemetery in/around 1870. ARE THERE ANY ONLINE LISTINGS OF THOSE INTERRED IN THIS CEMETERY? I am looking for dates of birth/death for both John McFarland and Martha Bonney McFarland Cowen, as well as any info on parents of said.

Looking for info pertaining to parents of Rebecca (b. c. 1837) and Rachel Hill. Rachel's affidavit states she and Rebecca were born and lived between on a farm between Tiltonsville and Dillonvale, and that their parents died when they were young ladies. On Rebecca's death certificate, her father is listed as John Hill; on Rachel's death certificate, their father is George J. Hill. Rachel indicates her mother's name was Mary Davis. I am unable to locate either in the 1850 census for Jefferson Co. I believe they were separated and raised by different families. Rebecca appears Wheeling in 1855. Rebecca married George Hennis/Ennis c. 1857 and and was widowed in 1861/2. They had two children. David Wilson Ennis who lived on Premars Road/Way/Run in Steubenville from around 1888-1927. Rebecca married Christian Philabaum in 1868 and lived in Washington Co, PA. When Christian died, she lived in WV, Steubenville and Wheeling. Rachel married William Davis and appears to have lived in the Brooke/Ohio County area of WV most of her life.

My Grandfather was born in Startle Ohio, from what we understand that city no longer exists as Startle. Do you know where I can find any information about Startle? My parents visited a Steubenville library a long time ago but the historian was not in that day. I want to make another trip to find any information I can but I am hoping you can guide me on where I might find the most information.

I am looking for info on Cable's Ferry. I am not certain if this was a town or an actual Ferry operation. Time frame was around spring 1806. One of my ancestor's (Elizabeth Farber) is listed as being born at Cable's Ferry, VA while waiting for flood waters to recede. They then crossed the river a few miles north from Steubenville. Any info would be appreciated.
