March 9, 1810, Vol. II, Issue 41:

MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT.
On Monday evening last, a boat with five persons on board, on a passage from this port to Warwick, off Connimicutt Point, by a sudden squall, was filled with water. Having quitted the boat, one by the name of James HACKSTONE, recovered the shore in safety, and repaired to a neighbouring house to procure assistance. The others, by clinging to the boat, were driven from the shore by the violence of the wind, and perished. The names of the sufferers were Nathan WESTCOTT and Arnold WESTCOTT, sons of Mr. Nathan WESTCOTT; Moses WESTCOTT, son of Mr. John WESTCOTT, all of Warwick; and Sterry YOUNG, of Scituate, who has left a wife and one child to mourn their irreparable loss. The cries of these unhappy sufferers were distincly heard from the shore, but no boat could be procured to afford them seasonable relief.

RUN AWAY from the subscriber an Apprentice black Boy, named Griffen GRUMMUCK, about seventeen years old; had on blue and white striped towcloth trousers, copperas coloured and white striped outside jacket, woollen waistcoat, round hat and boots: This is to forbid all persons harbouring or employing said Apprentice, either by sea or land, on penalty of the law. Whoever will take up, and return him to his master in Warwick, shall receive two cents reward, and no charges paid.

A melancholy accident occurred at East-Greenwich on Saturday last; the particulars, as we are informed, are as follows: As Mr. David CULVER, of Coventry, aged about sixty, and his son aged about twenty years, were collecting Quahogs, on a point of land running out into the harbour, the son not being acquainted with the situation of the bottom, stepped off into the channel, which the father perceiving, immediately went to his assistance, and both having their shirt bosoms filled with Quahogs being unable to swim, were drowned.

-At Woodstock, Con. on the 16th instant, in the 88th year of her age, Mrs. Elizabeth ARNOLD, relict of the late James ARNOLD, Esq. of Warwick. The piety and moral virtues which were eminently displayed throughout the protracted life of this venerable lday, rendered her highly interesting to her family and acquaintance. On the Sunday following her remains were respectfully deposited in the family burying ground in Warwick.

RAN AWAY,
ON Saturday night, the 4th instant an indented Apprentice Boy, named Sylvanus COREY, nineteen years old in November last past; about five feet three inches high, dark complexion, and dark eyes. Had on when he went away a dark short Coat and Cotton Plaid Trowers, and carried away a short Jacket and Trowsers, of grey colour, made of wool, and sundry other clothing. If any person will return said runaway, or give information so that the subscriber may find him, shall receive a reward of Twenty five Cents. and no charges paid. All persons and masters of vessels are forbid harbouring or employing said Apprentice, under the penalty of the law.

-At Harwich, N. Y. August 23d Elder Abraham LIPPITT, aged 65, formerly of the town of Warwick, in this State. This truly respectable man uniformly supported an exemplary character, and was enabled by the aid of his gracious God to sustain all the ills of life (of which he had an uncommon share) with that fortitude and resignation that become a Christian. He entered the Church of Christ in 1774; was ordained an Elder in 1782, and had the pastoral care of a Church until the time of his death.

Liberal encouragement will be given to good Weavers. They respectfully solicit the custom of all those who follow the business of Weaving, all other well disposed citizens.

THE HONOURABLE SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT of the State of Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations, at their April Term, A. D. 1813, pursuant to the order of the General Assembly of said State, appointed the Subscribers Commissioners to receive and liquidate the claims of the Creditors to said Estate; and also Assignees of said Estate, to appropriate the same agreeably to the Act of the said General Assembly, passed A. D. 1756, entitled "An Act for the relief of Insolvent Debtors." DESERTED from Fort William Henry, three soldiers of the Rhode-Island State Corps, viz -- Cyril L. MORSE, of Warwick, aged twenty-six years, six feet high, of light complexion, grey eyes, dark hair. Also Jonathan NICHOLS, of Coventry, aged twenty-three years, 5 feet 8 3/4 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, by profession a labourer. Also Gideon B. CAPRON, of East-Greenwich, twenty-one years of age, five feet 5 inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, by profession a seaman. Whoever will apprehend the said deserters and return them to Fort William Henry, or lodge them in jail in Providence, shall receive ten dollars reward for each of them, and necessary charges.

--At Coventry, on the 28th ultimate, of an inflammation of the breast Mrs. Lucy PARMELE, in the 59th year of her age. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Society, and her life was conformable to the religion she professed, and exhibited to her family and friends an example of piety and the Christian virtues -- her firm faith in the merits of her Redeemer, tranquilized her last moments, and cheered the dark passage to the tomb. She has left a husband and children to lament their irreparable loss.

-In Warwick, on Friday last, in the 40th year of his age, Captain Anthony SHAW, for several years a respectable nautical commander from this port. In the death of this worthy man society has lost a valuable and highly esteemed member, his wife a tender and affectionate husband, and his children a fond and indulgent parent. ... On Sunday, his remains were conveyed to Providence and respectfully interred in the west burying-ground, attended by the members of St. John's Lodge, the independent company of Marine Artillery, and numerous train of sympathizing relative and friends.

Ten Dollars Reward.
ON Wednesday last, deserted from the house of the late Benjamin D. GREENE, in Coventry, and from the custody of the subscriber, a young woman, named Sally HAMILTON, between 16 and 17 years old. She was apprehended and convicted of theft; and to prevent detection very frequently calls herself Sally TILLY. She is short, thick set, has light complexion, light brown hair, small blue eyes, and round features. She had on a blue chambray frock, a white round kerchief, &c. The above reward will be given to whoever will apprehend her, and give information to the subscriber in Coventry, so that the sentence of the law may be executed.

-In Warwick, on the 2d instant, Mr. Job W. HILL, in the 25th year of his age; a very promising young man, whose premature decease is universally regretted.
--On the 6th instant, after a long and distressing illness, Captain Benjamin GREENE, in the 43d year of his age. For the loss of this active and worthy citizen, the publick must mingle their regrets with those of his afflicted family. His domestick and social virtues, secured him many friends. For many years he had been a member of the Masouick Institution, and indefatigably laborious in the promotion of its tenets, and the welfare of mankind. On the 8th instant, a large and respectable number of Brethren, duly formed, proceeded from his late dwelling-house, to the place of interment, where the last tribute of respect was paid to his mortal remains. He left a disconsolate widow and two endearing children to mourn their loss.

-Drowned -- on Tuesday last, while fishing with an elder brother, about one mile from the shore at Potowomut, near East-Greenwich, Mr. Thomas LUTHER, of Warwick, aged about 21 years. His body has not yet been found. He had in his pocket a watch and about $50 in gold. Any information that may be the means of discovering the body of the deceased, will be gratefully received by his distressed parents, resident in Warwick, near the Arkwright Factory.

-In Coventry, on the 7th instant, in the 87th year of his age, Colonel Aaron BOWEN -- a patriot and very active supporter of the American Revolution, having filled several important publick stations with usefulness to his country. -In Warwick, on Sunday last, Squire MILLERD, Esquire, in the 70th year of his age; an officer of the Revolution, for many years a member of the Legislature of this State, and for a long time, and until his death, member of the Town Council of that town; the duties of which offices he discharged with honour to himself and usefulness to the publick. He was a kind husband and tender father. But, above all, he early embraced the Christian Religion, and was a member of the Baptist Church in that town of the order of the six principles. He steadfastly held the faith, and died in the full belief of a blessed resurrection.
-In East-Greenwich, on the 30th ultimo, Colonel MICAH WHITMARSH, in the 71st year of his age. He was an officer in the Continental service, during the principal part of the revolutionary war, and received a pension from the government. He was through life a valuable citizen, and was deservedly esteemed for his many virtues and amiable qualities.

On the 27th ultimo, Mr. Job Russell GREENE, of East-Greenwich, killed a hog, eighteen months old, which weighed, after being dressed, six hundered and sixteen pounds.

DEATHS,
-In Warwick, yesterday morning, in the 70th year of his age, Major Thomas HUGHES, a distinguished officer of the Revolution. The deceased was in active service during the whole period of the Revolutionary War, and was afterwards three years on the Indian frontier -- making in all ten years, devoted to the service of his country. Funeral to-morrow afternoon, at 1 o'clock, from his late residence.

On Sunday morning, the 30th ultimo, Zada GREENE, a coloured woman, was found dead in the highway called Back-Lane, near Old-Warwick. Some circumstances induced a suspicion she had been murdered; and an inquest was held upon her body. After investigation, the persons who had been suspected and apprehended, were discharged. It is presumed that the deceased, after many efforts to reach her home, was overcome by the intensity of the cold. Gazette.

March 8, 1822, Vol. XIV, Issue 45:

DIED,
-In Warwick, a few days since, Mr. John WISE, aged about 90 years. He was born in Langravate of Hesse-Cassel (Germany). At an early age, in consequence of the death of his Prince, he entered the service of a foreign power - landed with the British army at New-York, and was at the capture of Louisbourg, Cape Breton in 1758. In 1759, he was a soldier under the immortal WOLFE, in the memorable battle on the Plains of Abraham. In 1762, he fought, as a British soldier, at the siege of Havana. He subsequently returned to America, and was for some time garrisoned in Quebeck, and afterwards at the Island of Jamaica, where, he was finally discharged. About the year 1770, he settled at East-Greenwich, in this State, and at the commencement of the Revolutionary War, enlisted as a drummer in a Rhode-Island volunteer Company, which encamped with the American forces under WASHINGTON at Cambridge. During the whole of that arduous struggle, this humble veteran served with fidelity, and held various subordinate offices such as Drum-Major and Captain of the Provost Guard. He was present at the battle of York Town, and shortly after received an honourable discharge. He once more returned to his former residence in Rhode-Island, and continued to live for a number of successive years in this town, where he ever preserved that high sense of honour so characteristick of the soldier. He was a beneficiary under the Revolutionary Pension Law, and the just reward of his meritorious services, mitigated the evils of poverty and misfortune.

-In Warwick, on the 8th instant, Mr. John GORTON, in the 69th year of his age.

Mr. John GORTON, whose death is announced on our first page, was a descendant of the famous Samuel GORTON, one of the first settlers of Warwick. He was remarkable for the purity of his morals, and sustained through his long life an unblemished reputation. He was the teacher of an approved school for 51 winters in succession! His funeral was numerously attended, four-fifths of the persons present either being or having been his pupils.

-In Warwick, on the 16th instant, Captain George HARRISON, in the 83d year of his age. He was born in Colchester, Eng. and came to this country during the old French War. He was a distinguished nautical commander, and, in the various relations of domestick and social life, was highly respected for his integrity of character and exemplary conduct. He was a consistent member of the Episcopal Church and of the Fraternity of Masons. His funeral was attended by his masonick brethren, one of whom pronounced, at the place of interment, a solemn and appropriate address.

She sustained, with Christian fortitude, a painful and protracted illness, during which she gave ample evidence of her firm faith in the Christian Religion, and of a well-grounded hope in its promises. Her husband has lost an affectionate and faithful companion and friend - her brothers, a kind sister - the Church to which she belonged an exemplary member - and her friends and neighbours, an object of sincere respect and affection.

75 DOLLARS REWARD.
BROKE from the State's Jail in East-Greenwich, on the night of the 27th inst, John BRIGGS, Jun. of West-Greenwich, who was convicted of having counterfeit money in possession, with intention to pass, and for an assault and battery with an intention to kill; about thirty years of age, dark complexion, dark hair, large whiskers, thick set, and about five feet six inches high. Said BRIGGS has lost a piece of each ear, and has the letter C branded on his right cheek.
Samuel BOYCE of Rehoboth (Mass.) who was convicted of theft. He is about thirty years of age, stoutly built, with light hair, light complexion, and blue eyes; and about six feet high.

WHEREAS Benjamin G. SARLE, of East -Greenwich, in the county of Kent, Labourer, has petitioned the General Assembly for the benefit of an "act, entitled an act for the relief of insolvent debtors." This is to give notice to the creditors of the said SARLE, to appear (if they shall see fit) before the said Court of Common Pleas, on the second day of the term, to be holden at East-Greenwich, within and for our said county of Kent, on the third Monday of February next, to nominate an Assignee or Assignees, to receive an assignment of his estate for the benefit of all his creditors, according to the provisions of said act.

WHEREAS a certain instrument, purporting to be the last Will and Testament of James NICHOLS, late of said East-Greenwich, Yeoman, deceased, was presented to this Court for Probate. -- It is therefore decreed, that the consideration thereof be referred to the next Court of Probate, to be held on the last Saturday of January next, at 2 o'clock, P. M. at the State-House in said town, and that in the meantime this decree be published three weeks successively in one of the newspapers printed in the Town of Providence, that all persons interested therein may attend said Court and be heard respecting the same.
