I will do my best to post new queries at least once per week. I teach school, I have a family, and 3 dogs and 3 cats so I might get behind. I always get caught up over the weekend. I am looking for information on the following: Arthur Wellington BAKER (b.28 April 1857 d.28 Oct. 1940) He was married to Martha Victoria BRADFORD (b. 11 June 1862 d.19 April 1947). They lived in the Sumter County area and had 10 children. I am the ggrandaughter of their last child Emma Ruth BAKER. Arthur BAKER's parents were Alpheus BAKER (b.1824 d.1917) and Mary E. JONES (d.1866). Alpheus was also married to Maria E. JONES (b.14 May,1842 d.29 July,1917). Martha BRADFORD's parents were Samuel J. BRADFORD (b.1814 d.1875) and Mary DARGAN (b. 13 April 1825 d.4 May 1875) I would appreciate help with any of these families.

William Mansell, b. about 1805-6, Sumter County, SC -- who were his parents ? One source says Edward and Nancy Mansell. William had a brother, Edward, who moved with him to Ware County, Ga and then to Jasper Co., Tx.

STOKES-
Anyone working on the Stokes found in the 1800 census of Sumter Co. William and Jacob Stokes. Also in 1820 William, Sylvester, Marcus, Henry and Fred Stokes. I believe Sylvester is found in Georgia in 1840 about 80 years old. Trying to connect him to my Seth Sylvania Stokes born in 1820. Thanks for any help with this family.

GLOVER/ PYLANT- I believe my 3rd grgrandfather, Richard GLOVER marrried Susan PYLANT(D) in Sumter or Claremont Co. I hope to prove this using Church records of baptisms of their children. Their children were Lucinda, William P., Williamson P., Margaret, Matilda, Elizabeth, Ela. One of their children was born in 1799. Can anyone help me?

I am looking for info on John TISDALE and his wife, Jane. They were the parents of William Pleasant Tisdale (b. 1761). One of his sons was William Pleasant Tisdale, Jr. (b. 1795) who married Susannah CARR (b. 1790).

BAKER/BYRD/ SCOTT -
I am looking for information on the families of George Byrd and wife Sarah Commander. Sarah's father was Thomas for Perquimans N.C. George's parents were William Byrd and Jean. Byrd's moved to the area before 1776. George and Sarah had sons named George and Redden. George I died in Sumter around 1817. George II md. Sarah ?. George II and 9 of his 10 children moved to Mississippi around 1820. Their son, Redden, married Hannah Scott the daughter of Andrew Scott and Elizabeth Ritter. Redden and Hannah moved to Darlington county around 1830. Redden and Hannah's son, Andrew Jackson Byrd md Martha T. Baker the daughter of John or Jonothan Baker and Rachel. Andrew relocated about 1855 to Suwannee Co. Fl.
Andrew Scott and Elizabeth Ritter moved to Autauga, AL. Elizabeth died around 1845. Her obituary stated that she lived in Sumter county for 22 years before moving to Alabama. She was born in Wayne County N.C.
Martha T. Baker was born 4 May 1833 married 1 Oct 1846, died 3 Mar 1852. She left one son John Andrew Albert Byrd. JAA Byrd was mentioned in his grandfather's will when he died in Sumter County in 1862. Martha's possibly half brothers and sister were John W. Baker, Charlotty Baker md Wm H. Woods, James M. Baker, Benjamin Baker, and Andrew J. Baker.

I am seeking information on Andrew Bowman TENNANT -- my paternal ggrandfather. According to his obituary, he was born April 11, 1809 in "Sumter District, S. C." He died in Escambia County (Pensacola), Florida, April 9, 1876. (Although I don't know for certain, I believe the obiturary I have comes from a Pensacola newspaper.) Also, according to Escambia County Registered Voter Rolls dated 1845, Andrew Bowman TENNANT, along with J. B. TENNANT, R. J. TENNANT and Wm. TENNANT, are listed as authorized voters. Would appreciate any information on J. B., R. J. and Wm. as well as Andrew Bowman. Will share information I have on the TENNANT family.

Seeking info. and copy of WILLIAM MIXON Will which was 1773 or 1778. Date is important! Will mentions sons GEORGE MIXON, and grandson ELIJAH DIXON, also lists daughters PRUDENCE MIXON, ELIZABETH MIXON, FRANCIS MIXON, and SARAH MIXON. This Will was wit. by Dennis MCLENDON, Jesse BARBER and SAMUEL RATCLIFF. Prudence Mixon, the widow of Moses Daniel marr. JAMES RATCLIFF. Who did Frances and Elizabeth marry; one must have married a DIXON? Did Sarah Mixon marry a COMMANDER? The Will was proven 1783 and at that time Jesse Barber stated that the witness SAMUEL RATCLIFF was DEFUNCT- does that mean deceased or that he moved? Need to know the date off the original Will that it was written and info. on the family!

I am trying to get infromation on John Gibson. He was born in 1817 in Sumter Co. He married a Clarrisa C. ?. Clarrisa was born in Alabama. Their first child was born in Alabama. Their second child was born in Henderson C. Texas. This child was William Hiram Gibson, the great-grandfather of my wife, Martha Elizabeth Gibson. I know nothing about John's parents or brothers and sisters.

I am looking for any information on the children of Souly Milton Hodge born either in Sumter or Clarendon County. Mother's name was Mary, maiden name unknown. Possibly married in 1950s. Years later married a man by the last name of Harvin and lived in Sumter. Possibly was killed in an auto accident in late 1989 or early 1990.

looking for John TAYLOR born in sc @1793. wife name Mary MOORE? had one child in Sc according to census named Columbus born abt 1828.( may have been more children) Columbus's CSA record states birth in Sumter. Other children of John and Mary are Ias, Joel, Franklin, Joseph, Wm etc.. later family moved to Randolph Co. GA. Any info on the family would be greatly apprecaited .

Seeking information about my great-grandfather, William "Bill" REED. He was born in about 1846, quite possibly in Sumter, S.C. Family oral history says that Bill left Sumter in 1867, changed his name from Bill Barr to Bill Reed, and came to Tate County, Mississippi. He and his family had been slaves for a Barr Family, possibly in Sumter County or maybe a neighboring county. Family oral history says that Bill's mother, name unknown, stayed in Sumter. Bill's father, Pleasant BARR, was sold to a family in Tippah Co., MS before the Civil War. If you know of or have any information about any BARRs in Sumter County, please e-mail me. Thanks.

I am looking for information on the WILLIAM DUKES who is listed in the 1810 Sumter Co. census on page 216. Is anyone researching his line? Is he the same William Dukes who moved to Lowndes Co. AL sometime between 1813 and 1822?

MCELVAIN-
I am researching a DANIEL MCELVAIN and I found a reference that a MCELVAIN family lived in Sumter Co., S. C. in the Rev. War records and his daughter's family records. Also Daniel's census in Ga. reports that he was born in S. C. That is what I know. I am wondering if you are aware of any other information in Sumter Co. that might concern this man or his family. If you are and if you know where I might find something, I might be able to order it on library loan. I have checked in the Atlanta archives and the Augusta libraries.

I would like to know what the relationship of Elizabeth NEWMAN wife of Thomas NEWMAN was to the DURAND/DURANT family. Thomas NEWMAN was listed on the 1790 Clarendon co (Camden Dist) Census page 215, above him was the family of Henry DURAND/DURANT. Thomas & Elizabeth NEWMAN'S son Ethelial NEWMAN left his property that he and Elias DURAND/DURANT lived on to Elias. Could Elizabeth's maiden name be DURAND/DURANT? I would appreciate help with these families. Also Thomas and Elizabeth NEWMAN'S daughter Axsha married John COLE. Does anyone know where they are buried?

I am looking for information on Mary Ann (Netter) Brown, b. 1842 Sumter, SC. Her mother or father's surnames were either BROWN or OSTEEN. She married Robert KIRKLEY, Jr. in 1865. He was from northern Kershaw Co., SC. They had five children while living in Sumter and then moved to Marlin, Falls Co., Tx. in 1877 and had another son in 1884. They then moved to Nacogdoches Co., Tx. in 1884-85. Mary Ann Kirkley died in 1904 and is buried in Cushing, Tx.

Were selling land in Sumter Co., SC "150 acres where my son Reddick Rogers now lives" on 23 Sept 1813 (BK D:263-4). One daughter married William Nelson WEST (b 1770-1846 MS) Eight chn. Entire family moved to southern MS about 1818-1820. Will share info. 1) Who were parents of Shadrach ROGERS? 2) Was Hope Bethea Rogers the d/o "Swamp Jack" BETHEA? 3) Was she related to Jesse BETHEA and Phillip BETHEA? 4) Was Lott ROGERS a brother of Shadrach Rogers? 5) Who were the parents of William Nelson WEST? There have been Grooms families in Sumter County, as well as Charleston (sometimes spelled Grumes), Darlington, Marlboro, Chesterfield, Florence, Laurens Counties. Connecting family names include Locklear, Stoudemeyer, Ivey, Opry and Thigpen.
