MATHIS -My Grand Father, William James Jones (July 31, 1854- December 8, 1939), Married Maggie Mathis in 1880 and she died in 1881. There were no children by this marriage but I would like to find who her parents were. He remarried in 1883 to Mary Anna Josey who was the daughter of George LaFayette Josey. George had a sister, Sarah Julianna Josey that married M. Reese Mathis and I have records of five of their children. It is my belief that Maggie was a daughter of Sarah and Reese Mathis. All of these family members lived in the St. Charles area of Lee County. Does anyone know of any additional children of Sarah and Reese Mathis? June 23, 1999

BYRD/WORRELL - I am seeking information on the ancestors of Dorcas Byrd, b. c.1795, in Sumter County. She married Bryant Worrell c. 1815. One researcher states that Dorcas may have been of Cherokee ancestry. She is not listed in any Bryd genealogy records that I have found to date.Bryant Worrell moved to Sumter County from North Carolina, possibl Edgecomb County. A number of researchers are attempting to find record of his lineage. We have information on his later children who were born in Coosa County, Alabama, but there seems to be two children who were possibly born in Sumter County. The names of these children are not known. He was a wheelwright according to the 1860 census of Smith County, Texas.Bryant's first name points to a possible connection to the Bryant family in North Carolina. There may also be some connection to the Bowlin (Bolling)family after he moved his family to Alabama. This is the end of a lineage that has stumped their descendants. Any suggestions or possible clues are gladly welcomed. 27 June 1999

CONYERS -I am researching my Conyers family line that goes back to Sumter and maybe Clarendon County. The ancestor who emigrated from there was Daniel A. Conyers (a Wheelwright by profession) born about 1813. He left with his family between 1856-1859 based on the census record of the location of his children's birth. His wife's name was Eliza M. born about 1823.

Their Children were:

Frances C. Conyers born abt 1847 SC

Franklin J. Moses Conyers born Sept 13, 1848 SC

Almyra M. Conyers born abt 1851 SC

Caroline Conyers born abt 1853 SC

Henrietta A. Conyers born abt 1856 SC

Mary L. Conyers born abt 1859 Florida

Family history is that they came from Sumter Co. SC. and settled in Gadsen Co. FL. My anscestor is Franklin J. Moses who raised his family is SW GA. In my research I have found a Daniel Conyers on the Census of Sumter Co. in 1850 but they children's names do not appear to match. I have found a reference to a Franklin Moses Sr. and Jr. living in Sumter Co. at the same time and have wondered if possibly Eliza M. was a Moses or if the families lived close together. I would appreciate any leads you may be able to provide. August 15, 1999

SCOTT - I am looking for information concerning one CASON SCOTT of High Hills of Santee, Sumter County, SC. Cason moved to SC before the Rev. War and served in the SC Militia for 42 days during the conflict. He served as missionary to the Baptist Convention around 1800, and died at High Hills, 1816. His father is unknown to me, but is listed in some records as perhaps being Andrew or Thomas. Cason married Tabiatha Dixon (1755-1824) and they had nine children: Thomas, James (my ancestor), Samuel T., Mary, William Dixon, Cason JR., Joseph, Zachariah and Elizabeth. After Cason's death, the family moved to LA, MS and Texas where most of the children lived from 1840 onward. I have documented most of the family after 1816 in the LA, MS and Texas bounty land, marriage and birth/death dates and places, but lack information of the parents or siblings of Cason in SC. We have copies of Rev. War pay warrants, and some other records of Cason while in SC. These include, a copy of his obituary from "The Charleston Times" dated Jan 20 1816, some land documents from a land sale in 1817 and minutes from the Baptist Church records of High Hills. It is thought that Cason and Tabitha both came to SC from near New Bern, NC before the war. A Cason Scott bought land at the junction of The Neuse River and Goose Creek in 1737. This land was sold in 1757 by Avarilla Anderson. These transactions and dates do not fit the SC Cason, but might be either a father, brother or uncle, or not connected at all. Should you have any knowledge of these people or links to knowledge of them, would be forever grateful. 16 August 1999
