In nomine D E I, Amen. I, RobertDow of the District & State aforesaid, Planter being in goodhealth & strength & of sound & disposing memory (sic)blefsed be God for the same, do make & declare this my last will& testament in manner & form following, that is to say I havetwo (sic) fons William & Robert & my Wife Dorcas; I givegrant & devise to my said Sons William & Robert & to myWife Dorcas the whole of my Lands, Negroes & estate of all kindswhatsoever to be equally divided between them, share & Sharealike, (sic) neverthelefs subject to the following legacies &limitations - Also I give & devise to my Nephew John Dow, nowliving with me, One thousand Dollars. As the late Richard Richardsonby deed of gift conveyed to my son Robert a tract of Nineteen acreson which I have since built a costly house, my Will is, (as the saiddeed of gift -- was a whim of their (sic) Grahd father) that Robertshall claim no preeminence or advantage with regard to the saidNineteen Acres but that all division shall take place between them inthe Same Manner as if that deed of gift had not existed, but my SonRobert should claim the house & said nineteen Acres of land thenmy Will is that a house of equal Value shall be built for my SonWilliam, or the Value thereof given to my Son Willliam. ___________Money before any division of my estate takes place, _________________of Wife, my Will is that the One third part of my estate above g____ given to her, during her natural life, shall at her death be vestedin my Sons William & Robert, share & share alike. -- Also ifany of my Sons die without lawful (sic) ifsue of their body, then theSurvivor of them my Sons, shall (sic) altimately inherit the whole ofmy estate.

 

But if, for beyond human ken, both my Said SonsShould die without lawful (sic) ifsue of their bodies, then I give& devise the whole of my Estate, after the death of my wife, tomy brother William Dow of Finlarg Near Grautown, North Britain; to Mybrother Janathan Dow, of Clackbreak, Rothes, North Britain; to mySister Ann Dow, now Ann Thomson of Ston_ Wally Rothes, North Britain;to my brother Michael Dows Children in the following Manner, viz, thewhole of my estate to be divided into Six parts & my said BrotherWilliam & his children to take 1 of said parts or one third ofthe estate; -- my brother Jonathan & his child to take two ofsaid parts, or one third of my estate, the remaining Two parts, orone third of my Estate & be equally divided between my saidSister Ann, or her Children; & my brother Michael Son &natural daughter Margaret; say half of the above two thirds to Ann& her children & half to Michaels Son & daugher, abovenamed. -- John Dow, my nephew before named shall have Six Negroesfrom my estate, before any division takes place between my Ken inScotland, & have also 300 acres of land. My Will is that myNegro Woman Sibby Shall be free at my death & that she receivetwelve dollars yearly, or her regular allowance in Corn, during hernatural life from my estate & I confide in my wife & Sons toexecute this part of my Will, knowing that otherwise this clause wontbe void, without my freeing her in my life time. --

 

I also give and devise to my Nephew John Dow,above named, the Negro boy Reubin, & the Negro girl Norah, boththe children of Lucy, in (sic) adition to the One thousand dollarsabove mentioned. I hereby nominate constitute & appoint my Wife,during her widowhood, executrix of this my last Will & Testament. My Son William after he is seventeen years of age Executor; & mygood friends James B. Richardson, Edward Richardson & my NephewJohn Dow Executors of this my last Will & Testament. Thedivision between my Widow & Children of the property Shall takeplace whenever my Widow or Son William desire a division to takeplace. It is further my Will that to prevent breaking a family ofNegroes, that my Nephew John Dow Shall receive from my executors inlieu of the two Negroes above mentioned Cash in One Year to the Valueof said two Negroes Reubin & Norah, at the Value they may be atat my decease. It is likewise my Will that the Crops from my Estateshall be laid out in purchasing Negroes during the Minority of mychildren, but nothing herein mentioned is intended to prevent my SonWilliam receiving his portion of my Esate when (sic) Feventeen Yearsof Age, yet -- so as not to sell or Mortagage any part of it till heis twenty one Years of age; & the farm with regard to my (sic)Fon Robert; -- I have always judged that when boys were put early in(sic) pofsefsion of property they had an Ambition to Advance it &my Son I hope will duly appreciate with what efforts I acquired theproperty for them & will hand it down to their children.
