State of South Carolina

In the name of god Amen I Matthias James ofSumpter District Claremont County and State aforesaid, being thoughin a declining state of health, yet of a perfect soundnefs of mindand memory; knowing that life is uncertain, and that death isinevitable, I have thought it good, to constitute this to be my lastwill and Testament, and desire it may be received by all as such;First I give up my soul to God, the auther of my existence, hoping hewill secure it to his everlasting Kingdom.--Desiring that my body maybe decently buried, at the discretion of my Executor; As to my money,my will and desire is to dispose of it, after the following manner;First I will, that all my lawful debts be paid.--Secondly I will anddesire that my niece, Rebecca B James the daughter of Walter Jamesmay have and to hold forever the balance of the said money after theDebts aforementioned are paid; Thirdly my will and desire is that mybeloved Brother, Walter James and his wife Esther James may have andto hold forever the negro boy, by the name of Dave: I also will anddesire that my Niece Elizabeth Lanorah James daughter of Walter Jamesmay have and to hold forever the Negro boy by the name of Bill.Fourthly my will and desire is that my Nephew Matthias James the sonof Richard James May have and to hold forever the negro boy by thename of Johnathan-only:-I also will and desire that my nephew JohnMatthias James the son of Walter James, May have and to hold forever,my chest of tools I also will and desire that my Brother Walter Jamesmay have and to hold forever my wearing apparel; Fifthly and last-Iconstitute and appoint My Brother Walter Executor of this my lastwill and Testament:--In witnefs where of I have hereunto set my handand Seal this the 19th day of October in the year of our Lord onethousand eight hundred and twenty
