Will of William Newman

 

 

In the name of God Amen. I William NewmanGent. Planter of Sumter District and state of South Carolina being ofsound mind and good memory though indisposed in body--- calling tomind the uncertainty of life&emdash;do make this my last will andtestament in the manner and form following. First, after paying allof my just debts and funeral expenses, I give and bequeath unto by mybeloved daughter, Sarah Newman, one negro girl named Lotte, onefeather bed and furniture and twenty five dollars&emdash;second, Igive and bequeath to my beloved daughter, Genelopy Newman, one negroboy named July&emdash;

One feather bed and furniture and twenty fivedollars--- third, I give and bequeath to my beloved daughterElizabeth, one negro girl named Rose and one feather bed andfurniture and fifty dollars&emdash;fourth, I give and bequeath to mygrandson John Newman&emdash;one hundred acres of land&emdash;part ofthe tract I now occupy adjoining Stephen Mitchel.---

Fifth--- the balance of the tract I live on Ibequeath to my beloved son Drury Newman&emdash;sixthly&emdash;mynegro wench Jude to be sold and divided between my sons equally afterpaying- my debts- seventhly- my negro boy Butler, stock and householdfurniture to be sold to defray my debts-- If the seventh clause issufficient to pay my debts&emdash;then the negro wench Jude mentionedin the sixth to remain with my daughters during the time they livesingle. After the marriage of the last of them the said wench Judeand her issue to be sold and equally divided&emdash;between mybeloved sons Maughan C. Newman and William Newman and Drury NuryNewman&emdash;Lastly I do hereby nominate, constitute and appointStephen Mitchel, Gersher Benbow and Rn. Reaves&emdash;Executors ofthis my last will and testament.--- In witness whereof I have set myhand and seal this 18th day of March 1815-----

Signed, sealed and delivered, published by thesubscriber, William Newman for his last will and testament in thepresence of us who at his request and in his presence have subscribedour names as witness there to&emdash;

 

N. B. The negroes mentioned in the above will isleft to the legal heirs of my daughters as specified to each of themthat is Sarah, Genelopy and Elizabeth Newman----
