Will of John Pettypool

 

 

In the name of God Amen,------

I John Pettypool of Sumter District in thestate of South Carolina being very sick and weak in body, but strongin mind and memory, thanks be to God for the same--- and calling tomind the mortality of man, and knowing that it is appointed for allmen to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament---that is to say after my departure of this life I desire to be buriedin a decent manner at the discretion of my Executors,---

Secondly, I desire that all of my just debts shallbe paid, after which I give, devise and dispose of the same in mannerand form following----

In the first place I lend to Ann Pettypool, mydearly beloved wife, that Plantation or tract of land I now live oncontaining one hundred and forty eight acres, together with all mypersonal estate during her life, secondly, at her death, I give andbequeath to my two children VIZ, Stephen Pettypool and EllenPettypool, lawful heirs of my body, all that estate above mentioned both real and personal forever, to be equally divided between thetwo--- and I do likewise constitute, make and ordain Spencer Wilderand Ann Pettypool my only and sole Executors of this my last will andtestament, and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul alland every other former testaments, wills and legacies, bequests andexecutors, by me in any ways before this time named. Willed andBequeathed, Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my lastwill and testament-

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand andseal, the 14th day of January&emdash;in the year of our Lord1813----
