Sumter District ) Be ithereby known to all men that I Alexander Silliman of the Districtand State aforesaid make this my last will and testament -- First forthe maintenance of my mother Mrs. Isabella Silliman of Rowan CountyNorth Carolina, I give to her during her life the interest of allmonies I may die possessed of, also of Thomas Johnstone note due 1stJanuary next, and to secure the accruing interest hereafter, I wishthe money and amount of the note vested in stock, if it can be donewithout loss. Secondly, I give to my half brother Thomas Silliman ofRutherford County West Tennessee, five hundred dollars. Thirdly, tomy brother James Silliman I have by deed given a life estate to myshare of my fathers lands in North Carolina, remainder in fee to JohnSilliman son of James, - I now give to the said James the service ofmy negro George until the said John Silliman becomes twenty fiveyears old, I then give George to him, his heirs and sssigns forever,I further give to said James whatever may be recovered from JamesCowan, in the suit I have against him for the negro Dorcas. Fourthly, to my brothersRobert Silliman and John Silliman I deviseand bequeath my house and lot in Stateburg to be equally dividedbetween them, but my Executors are to sell it for not less than 2500-- and are to apply such of the rents as they think proper to repairand improve, untill that price can be obtained. And I furtherauthorize either of my Executors with the approbation of two othersto see the said premises for that price, - and until then to rent orlease them, and to repair and finish and improve by building achimney and fences as they shall think fit. Fifthly, I give to mybrother Samuel Silliman my library and wardrobe together with all myloose papers subject to the eseptions herein after made, I also givehim my watch now in Charleston for reair my leather trunk, and on mymothers death one half the dividend on the fund I have bequeathed forher use, or of the fund itself, and constitute him as Executor; theother half of that dividend or fund I give to James Silliman. LastlyI appoint John S. Miller, John Potts, William Haynsworth, and Dr. WmW. Anderson Executors of this testament.. Furthermore, I give toDr. Brownfield my maderea wine my umbrella and best closths brush,and a gold headed staff worth sixty dollars or any other object ofthat value he may prefer; to Mrs. S.M. Brownfield I give my set oftea china, (white edged with gold) with three waithers, all my silverspoons, & my small buck handled knives & forks; to Brobert J.Brownfield I give my pistol, & powder flask, my black sild gownand my sett of Nicholsons Encyelopedia; to John W Brownfield I givemy gold broach, my share in the Claremont Library, and devise to him,my reversionary right to the house and lot of the Society.

To John Potts I give my large map of the UnitedStates, to Judge James a snuff box worth fifty dollars, to Dr.Haynsworth, my shaving glass (convex) and a Ring worth fifteendollars & to Dr Hansworth, an Esculapian staff or stick such asmy Executors shall think proper, worth twenty dollars.

The rest of my property I wis sold & thediscretion of my Executors and the surplus of my estate if any whensettled paid to my brother Samuel Silliman whom I make my onlyresiduary legatee.

 

Signed and declared by Alexander Siliman thetestator as & to be his last will and Testament in our pressence,who in his presence & by his request subscribed our name aswitness this 12th September Anno Domini 1821.
