WILL OF JOSEPH SINGLETON

 

In the name of God Amen, I Joseph Singleton, ofthe State of South Carolina and Sumter District being in a low Stateof Health but of sound mind and memory and knowing that all men haveto Die do make and ordain this my last will and Testament, herebyrevoking and disannulling all other and former wills made by me thatis to say-------------------

 

First I recommend my soul to Almighty God who gaveit, and my body to be buried in a Decent & Christian like mannerby my Executors and as to my worldly affects after the payment of myJust Debts. I dispose of in the followingmanner-------------------

 

Item I give and bequeath unto my wife ElizabethSingleton to following Negroes viz: Anthony & his wife Leah andsix children, Dick, Billy, Lucy, Peggy, Barny & Nora Nance &her three children Rachal George and Deci. old Cato, Letty, Silvieand Sampson. Making in all sixteen Negroes to her and her heirs andassigns forever & with all their future increase, and I furthergive to my wife E. Singleton one old negroe fellow named Dick to herduring her natural life only and after her death the said old fellowDick I do hereby give him his freedom and to be no longer a slave toany person whatsoever---and I also give and bequeath unto my wife E.Singleton all my Household and kitchen furniture except what may behereafter mentioned and I also give her my plantation tools and allmy stock of Cattle except what is hereafter given to my son James andstock of Hogs except what is hereafter give to James and also all mystock of plantation Horses be they more or less and also my ridingchair, all which property above given except old Dick, I do giveabsolutely to her and her Heirs and assignsforever-----------------

 

Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter AnnFalconer Eight negroe Essex & his wife Dinah and her fourchildren Nat, Mily, Henry and Abraham Mary and her child Sara to herand her Heirs of her Body and in case of Falue of issue to return tomy surviving Heirs, and I further give to my Daughter Ann Falconernine other negroes namely Tom, Patience Ben, Big Sam Esther Letty oldFrank young Cato and Charles with all the future increase to her andher Heirs and assigns forever------------------------

 

Item I give and bequath to my son Robt. Singletonseven negroes namely York and his wife Hannah & their fivechildren Mary Washington March York and Billy with their futureincrease to him and the Heirs of his body but in case of a falure ofissue to return to my surviving Heirs, and I further give to my sonRobt Singleton seven other negroes Namely Luck January, Elery Tomy,Goerge, Adam and Jacob-- with their future increase to him and Heirsand assign forever----------------------------

 

Item I give and bequeath to my son Sherwood JamesSingleton eight negroes namely Nancey & her children Tener Rose,Dave Peter Eve, Daniel & Mingo with their future increase to himand the Heirs of his body and in case of falure of issue to return tomy surviving Heirs, and I further give to my son S James Singletonsix other negroes namely, Cally, Cate, Robbin, Fanny, Isaac and Maywith their future increase to him and his Heirs and assigns forever--and I also give my son James one bed and Furniture and one matrEighteen Head of Cattle and half my stock of Hogs to him & hisHeirs and assigns forever----------------

 

Item I give and Devise to my Daughter An Falconerall the land lying on bear Branch and the east side of brunsons swampcontain in the plott purchased from Isham Moore lying west of a lineto be drawn from the pine Corner which is the north east corner ofRichardsons boundary, crossing bear branch, to the south east cornerpine of Pipkins: boundary, also all that tract which I purchasedfrom A. Blanding & granted to __?__all adjoining be the samemore of less with all the improvements & Heriditiments whatsoeverto here and her Heirs forever------------------------

 

Item I give and devise to my son Robt Singletonall the remainder of the tract or parcel of land contain'd in theplott purchased from Isham Moore and lying east of the land given toAnn Falconer be it more or less with all the improvements andHeriditiments whatsoever to him and his Heirs and assignsforever----

 

Item I give and divise to my son S JamesSingleton the plantation whereon I now live containing about EightHundred acres of land more or less bounding East on Capt Singletonsland north by Robt Brown & south by Williams land together withall the improvement Heriditiments and appurtenances whatsoever to himand his Heirs and assigns forever with the only exception that mywife Elizabeth Singleton is to live on it and have the use of theHouse & what land she pleases her life time and to be given up ather death.--------

 

Lastly I will Bequeath & Divise that all therest of my property should there be any shall be equally dividedamong my children - by a valuation of sale as the Majority may seemproper. And I do hereby appoint my wife Elizabeth Singleton myExecutrix and Robt Singleton and Willm Falconer my Executors to takeinto possession my Estate at my death and fulfill this my last will& Testament given under my hand and seal this eight day ofJanuary in the year of our Lord one thousand eight Hundred and Twelveand in the thirty fifth year of the independence of the United Stateof America-------------------
