WILL OF GEORGE COOPER

 

 

State of South Carolina Sumter District.

This Sixteenth day of July in the Year of our Lordone thousand eight hundred and twenty nine. In the Name of God Amen, I George Cooper of the State and District aforesaid, being weak and sick of body, but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for the same. Calling to mind the Mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die; do make and ordain this my last will and Testament. That is to say, principally and first of all, I resign my Soul to God who gave it, and my body to the Earth to be intered in a decent and Christian like manner, and as touching Such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to Bless me with, I give and bequeath in Manner following.

First it is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid. I give and bequeath to Charles Howard, Negro woman Elsey, and her children, Pompey, Isaac, Lenton, Thadeus, Mosey, and Jane, to be delivered to him at the discretion of my Executors, hereafter to be named. I give and bequeath to the Session of Salem Church, and their Successors for the use and benefit of said church, One thousand dollars, to be kept as a permanent fund, and be kept at interest or vested in United States Bank Stock, at the discretion of said Session, the Interest of which alone shall be liable to the current or contingent expences of said Church. And to be paid over to the said Session within two Years or sooner, after my Decease, clear of Interest until paid to said Session, I also give and bequeath to the Session of Salem - Church, and their Successors, Onehundred Dollars for the purchase of Bibles, and Watts[?], psalms & Hymns, for the use of the Indigent and Colored persons of said Church to be paid at the direction of my Executors. I also give and bequeath to my friend Mrs. Nancy Canty of Camden, four hundred dollars within two years after my decease, clear of Interest.I direct my Executors to sell my lands on Pedee River, in Marion District, to be sold as Soon as Convenent, and the proceeds vested inUnited States Bank Stock, and to be paid over to my son George William when he arrives to the Years of twenty one. I give and bequeath to Sarah Isabella, Daughter of Doctor Robert and Margaret F. Muldrow, one Negro Girl named Binkey, also One bed Stead, bed and furniture known as my late wife's at Mount Zion; I also give and bequeath to Jane Cooper Daughter of said Robert and Margaret F. Muldrow, One Mahogany Bed Stead bed and furniture also at my plantation near Mount Zion in upper Salem. I give to my friend John Bethune One Beadstead, bed & furniture. -- I give and bequeath to my beloved Son George William, One Negro Girl Lenah, and Molly and her Child Elias, together with their future Increase. I also give and bequeath to my said Son, One hundred other negroes, to be selected by my Friend Doctor Robert Muldrow. I give and bequeath to George Cooper,John Boyd, Warren Arthur, Sarah Isabella, Jane Cooper, and William James Wilson, Children of Doctor Robert and Margaret F. Muldrow Four

a piece, according to valuation. The following old Negroes, George, Cesar, Flora, Mosey, Hannah, Candy, and Patty, I wish not to be appraised nor divided, but to remain and be supported on the plantationin which they now are. The balance of my negroes not disposed of above,to be appraised and equally divided according to valuation between my Nephew Wiliam Cooper, and the above named Children of Doctor Robert and Margaret F. Mildrow -- I give and bequeath to my Son George Williamall my household and Kitchen furniture, plantation tools, live Stock of every description and all other of my personal property not otherwise given off; except so much as my Executors may deem perishable, which they are directed to sell. I also give to my Son George William, my twoplantations, One in Lower Salem and the other in the vicinity of Mount Zion, which said plantations, together with all his personal Estate my Executors will put him in posession of on his arriving at the Years of twenty one, but if my Son George William should die in a state of Minority, and leave no child or Children living, at the time of his decease but a widow living, then it is my desire that the whole of the personal property be appraised and equally divided, between the said widow, my nephew William Cooper, and the above named Children of DoctorRobert and Margaret F. Muldrow. Also on my son so deceased, I give and bequeath my plantation in Lower Salem, to George Cooper, Son of Doctor Robert and Margaret F. Muldrow, and my plantationnear Mount Zion, to John Boyd and Warren Arthur, sons of the said Doctor Robert and Margaret F. Muldrow. If the above named George Cooper, John Boyd, and Warren Arthur, should die in a State of Minority, nor leave any lawful Issue then it is my will thatmy plantation so given off to either or all of them to be appraised and divided between the Surviving Children of Doctor Robert and Margaret F. Muldrow. I give to my Son George William my gold watch, and clock. It is my wish that my son George William Receive such an education as the best Schools and Colleges in our Country Afford, AndI hereby appoint and constitute my friend Doctor Robert Muldrow Guardian and Trustee, that such an Education be afforded him. My Executors hereafter mentioned are hereby authorized and impowered To Choose five disinterested free holders to appraise and divide my Estate without application to the court of Law or Equity. Lastly I dohereby nominate, authorize, constitute and appoint, Doctor Robert Muldrow Mr. Samuel McBride and My Nephew William Cooper, Executors tothis my Last Will and Testament -- And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul, all and every other will and Testament, by me made Ratifying and Confirming this and this Only to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal the day and Year first above written.

Codocil.

This Codocil, and the Interlination of the word "Negroes", in the thirtieth line from the top, were made before the due Ratification of the above. I will and direct that my House and lot in Camden be rented from Year to Year, or sold at the discretionof my Executors, and that they make titles to the same, and also to my Lands on Pedee, Marion District already Authorized to be sold. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal the day and Year first above written.
