JOHN McDONALD

 

 

In the Me of God, Amen. I, John McDonald of southCarolina and Salem County, being of sane mind and memory--and callingunto mind the Mortality of the body and knowing that it is appointedunto all men once to die--Do make and ordain this my last Will andTestament, that is to say principally and first of all I give andrecommend into the hands of Almighty God, my soul, who gave it and mybody I resign to the earth from whence it came, to be buried in adecent Christian like manner, nothing doubting but at theResurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty Power ofGod, and as touching such worldly Estate as it has pleased God, tobless me with in this life--I Give, Demise and Bequeath in thefollowing manner. First I give and Bequeath to my beloved Wife Sarahthe Plantation whereon I now live, together with all my Landed Estateto use and improve during her natural life and then to be equallydivided among my four children Mary, John, Thomas and Moses. Secondly I will and desire that after my just debts are paid that allmy property of every description--Negroes--Horses Cattle Hogs--andPlantation Tools to be continued and kept together on the Plantationwhereon I now live for the common benefit of my beloved Wife Sarahand my four children Mary, John, Thomas and Moses. I also desirethat my children as before named be decently educated out of theproceeds of my Estate while so kept together. Thirdly I will anddesire that whenever my oldest child shall come of age or marry thatall my property of every description--(Land excepted as before named)be appraised, and divided into Five Equal portions or shares. One ofthese portions or shares I do give and Bequeath unto my beloved WifeSarah for her own separate Benefit and use to do and dispose ofaccording to her will and pleasure. The remaining four portions orshares I give and Bequeath unto my children Mary, John, Thomas andMoses to be continued on the plantation except the one's share thathas come of age or married--until they effectively come of age ormarry--and then to receive their dividend or share. It is my Willand Testament that the slave or negro property given and bequeathedby me to my Children as above named, be for them during their naturallives and then to be equally divided among their Children and so tobe continued to devolve from one Generation to an other. It is myWill that my Executors exercise their own Judgement as to the bestmethod of paying whatever debts I may leave unpaid at my decease. Ido hereby utterly revoke all other Wills and Bequeaths made by meheretofore. And I do hereby Appoint Constitute and Ordain my Trustyfriends Josiah Lucky, John McDonald and my beloved Wife Sarah myExecutors and Executrix of this my last Will and Testament, inWitness whereof I have set my hand and Seal this 19th of June oneThousand Eight hundred and Forty Five-------
