Will of John Shaw

 

 

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Shaw, ofSumter District and State of South Carolina, Planter, being of soundand disposing mind and memory, praised be God for the same, do makeand ordain this my last will and testament in manner and formfollowing. In the first place let all my just debts be paid.

 

Item I will and bequeath to each of my childrennamely Sarah W. Shaw, Isabella B. Shaw, Eliza A. Shaw, Susanna G.Shaw, and John C. Shaw, a good trunk with lock and key for holdingtheir clothing. Also, a bed, bedstead and furniture.

 

Item it is my will and desire that my Estate bekept in a common fund out of which my children above named are toreceive clothing, maintenance and a good English education. And aseach one comes to the years of twenty one or marries she or he is toreceive his or her just proportion of all my lands, Negroes andpersonal property, which portion I give and bequeath to each one, tohis or her heirs or assigns forever.

 

Item it is my will and desire that the land benot divided into little sections unless to the possession; but thateach heir in lieu of the land receive the value thereof in money orNegroes at the option of my Executors hereafter named. The lands Idesire to be retained for my son, John C. Shaw, who I wish to beraised at the Plow Handles. After having received a good Englisheducation, but should it clearly be manifest that God intended him tobe no common man by endowments which are rare, then let him be putupon a regular course of Education as circumstances willadmit.

 

Item I will and bequeath to my daughter, SarahW. Shaw, my riding chair, harness and horse Factor.

 

Item it is my will that all the perishableproperty and things not necessary to keep up the Plantation bepublicly sold.

 

Item I appoint my respected friends William W.Bradley, Wm A. Shaw and Isaac D. Whitworth, my Executors, of this mylast will and testament, to whom I give full power to order the saleabove directed and to call in three or four freeholders to appraiseand make the different divisions as specified in this my last willand testament. I do certify this as my last will and testamenthereby revoking and rendering all others null and void and thisconfirming. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand andseal this day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eighthundred and thirty one
