Will of H. B. Singleton

 

In the name of God, Amen,

I Henry Blanchard Singleton, of the state ofSouth Carolina, Sumter District, being of sound mind and memory,conscious of the certainty of death and the uncertainty oflife&emdash;

Do make and ordain this my last will andtestament, (revoking all others which may heretofore have been madeby me-----) as follows-----viz----

Item 1st It is my will and desire, that my Estatereal and personal, be divided between my beloved wife, LauraCatharine Singleton, and my six children----- Sarah Martha Kirk,Susan Henrietta Singleton, Mary Louisa Singleton, Thomas DaySingleton, William Henry Singleton, and Richard Harrott Singleton--------

Item 2nd It is my will and desire, that myExecutors and Executrix herein after to be mentioned, in dividing myestate (as above) equally between my beloved wife and six childrenabove named; cause a certain Negro girl named Charlotte, given to mydaughter Sarah Martha Kirk, to be appraised at the time of thedivision of my estate, and divided as part and parcel of my personalestate; my daughter Sarah retaining the said Negro girl Charlotte asa part of the portion left her as above.

Item 3rd It is my will and desire that if eitherof my children should die before they attain the age of twenty one,or marry; or marrying, die without lawful issue---- the portion ormoity which they shall inherit, shall return to the survivingbrothers and sisters, and be equally divided between them and mybeloved wife Laura C. Singleton.

Item 4th It is my will and desire that my estatebe kept together till all my lawful debts be paid--- after which(should my Executors and Executrix herein after to be named deem itpracticable) my daughter Sarah be permitted to take off her share orportion---

Item 5th I desire my beloved wife Laura C.Singleton to remain on my plantation, during her natural life, oruntil she may determine otherwise--- and further desire, should myExecutors and Executrix deem it practicable to give off to mydaughter Sarah M. Kirk her portion; that the balance of my personalproperty be kept and worked on the plantation, and the proceeds thereof be appropriated to the support of my wife---and support andeducation of my children---that no division of the remainder of myestate, real or personal shall be made till my children, everallyattain the age of twenty one, or marry---in which event, his or herportion shall be given off, the remainder being kepttogether---

Item 6th For the due execution of this my lastwill and testament---I hereby nominate and appoint my trusty friendsPhillip C. Kirk and Dr. John F. Felder, together with my beloved wifeLaura C. Singleton my Executors and Executrix---

In witness whereof I have hereunto set myhand and seal in presence of the witnesses whose names are hereuntoaffixed, each of whom signed as witnesses hereto, in presence of thetestator aqnd of each other&emdash;this 21st day of June in the yearof our Lord, one thousand, eight hundred and forty seven-----
