WILL OF JOHN SINGLETON

 

In the Name of God, Amen, I John Singleton,Senior, [Planter in the State of South Carolina and District ofSumter being in a low state of health, but of sound and disposingmind, blessed be God for the same and recollecting that is appointedonce for all men to die, do make and ordain this to be my last willand testament in manner and form following Viz. I recommend my Soulinto the hands of Almighty God and my body to be buried in a decentand Christian like manner at the discretion of my friends andExecutors.

 

First, it is my will that all my just debts bepaid&emdash;

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto mydaughter, Mary Brunson, wife of Isaac Brunson, one Negro woman namedMariah and her increase to her and the lawful heirs of her bodyforever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto mydaughter, Nancy Bradford, one Negro man named Lancaster to her andthe lawful heirs of her body forever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto mydaughter, Elizabeth Rose, one Negro man named January to her and thelawful heirs of her body forever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto mydaughter, Sarah Harvin, one Negro boy named Joe to her and the lawfulheirs of her body forever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my son,John R. Singleton, one Negro man named Isaac to him and the lawfulheirs of his body forever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto mydaughter, Harriet Singleton, one Negro girl named Nelly and herincrease to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto mydaughter, Emily Singleton, one Negro girl Chloe and her increase toher and the lawful heirs of her body forever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto mydaughter, Epsy Singleton, one Negro girl named Fanny and her increaseto her and the lawful heirs of her body forever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto mydaughter, Rebecca Singleton, two Negro girls named Lizett and Eadyand their increase to her and the lawful heirs of her bodyforever.

 

Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my son,William J Singleton, one Negro boy named Henry, and one tract of landcontaining six hundred and forty acres more or less, originallygranted to Joseph Singleton and adjoining lands belonging to theEstate of Spencer Wilder, deceased, to him and the lawful heirs ofhis body forever.

 

Item, it is my will and desire that the land whichlies between the tract of land given by me to John R Singleton andthe tract above bequeathed to William J Singleton, be equally dividedbetween my said sons, John and William, supposed to be between oneand two hundred acres.

 

It is my will and desire that all the rest andresidue of my estate both real and personal be kept together by mywife, Elizabeth Singleton, for her support during her natural life,and after her death to be equally divided between all my children ortheir lawful heirs.

 

Item, it is my will and desire that all my Negroesexcept those that is already devised, be worked on my plantation forthe payment of my just debts.

 

Item, it is my will and desire that if my wife,Elizabeth Singleton, should die before all my young children receivetheir education, then in that event, there must be a fund sufficientreserved for their education, and that all my young children [Viz] Harriet, Emily, Epsy, William and Rebecca, be supported out of therest of the property which is to be kept by my wife, ElizabethSingleton, until they come of age or marry.

 

It is my will and desire that if my death shouldtake place before this crop is made, that the two Negroes devised toNancy Bradford and Elizabeth Rose named Lancaster and January, bekept on the plantation until it is made and gathered.

 

Lastly, it is my will and desire that if any of mychildren should die at any time of their life without lawfulissue&emdash;that such property given by me to them shall return andbe equally divided between my children that should be alive or theirheirs.

 

I do, hereby, nominate and appoint Thomas Dugan,William R Harvin, and John R Singleton my Executors to this my lastwill and testament, hereby revoking and disannulling all other willsheretofore by me made. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set myhand and seal this Twenty first day of April in the year of our Lordone thousand eight hundred and twenty four.
