Will of Richard Young

Sumter District

 

 

In the Name of God, Amen. I, Richard Young, of the Districtand State aforesaid, Planter, being of sound and disposing mind, domake and constitute my last will and devise as follows, that is tosay. My immortal Soul I commend to God, my mortal Body I wish tohave a decent Christian burial.

 

Item 1st My will and devise is that, all my just debts be paidout of my Estate. And the balance of my Estate after paying my debtsto be disposed of as herein after directed.

 

2nd My saddle horse I wish sold on a credit of ten months anda note with good security taken bearing interest for the purchasemoney which is to be used in the payment of my debts.

 

3rd I will and devise to my beloved wife, Martha C. Young, allmy household and kitchen furniture, also, one riding gig and harness,forever.

 

4th I will and devise to my said wife one Negro man named Aby,during her natural life and no longer.

 

5th I will and devise to my daughter, Sarah Judson Young allmy Plantation or tract of land containing one hundred and fiftyacres. Also, two Negroes named Jacob and Sally, also, all my stockof cattle, hogs and work horses and plantation tools to her and herissue forever.

 

6th In case my wife, Martha C. Young, should die before mydaughter, Sarah Judson Young, my will is that the Negro Aby beforegiven to my wife, go to my daughter in like manner with those beforegiven to her. But, if my said daughter should die before her Motherleaving no issue then in that case, I wish all her property given tomy said wife during her natural life.

 

7th Should my wife, Martha C. Young, bear me another childafter my decease, then in that case my will is that all the propertyherein before given to my daughter Sarah be equally divided betweenthe two children to them and their issue forever. I, also, wish theNegro Aby divided in the same manner at the death of my wife.

 

8th In case my daughter or children, as the case may be,should die leaving no issue, my will and devise is that the whole oftheir property be given to my brother William R. Young, at the deathof my said wife, Martha C. Young.

 

9th I wish my wife and daughter or children [should my wifebear me another] to live on my Plantation and have their Negroesworked on the same for their support and the education of my daughteror children as the case may be. I, also, wish my Plantation tools,work horses and stock of every description to remain on thePlantation for the support of the family above mentioned, during thelifetime or widowhood of my wife.

 

Lastly, I, hereby, nominate, constitute and appoint, William R.Young, Jacob Little and Thomas H. Hayles, Executors, for this my lastwill and devise. In testimony whereof, I hereto set my hand and sealthis ninth day of January Anno Domini 1831.
