PHELAN-SAYERS AREA

LOCATION: From the town of Bastrop, Bastrop County, Texas go east on Hwy 71. Turn left
on Hwy 95 and go north towards Elgin. @4 miles, after passing the skating rink, on the left,
and going over the bridge, turn left on County Rd 43 (Old McDade Rd). At the stop sign turn
right on County Rd 157. This road becomes county Rd 179. Stay left when the road splits.
You will cross railroad tracks and see a sign stating Steiner Ranches, Headquarters 3 miles.
This is a very rough gravel road all the way to the cemetery. You will see the Phelan Cemetery
on the right, pass over a one car bridge skirting the river and, after several miles, you will go
through a cattle guard which has a lease sign attached. The road winds to the right around a hill.
The best way to find it is to go @2 miles from here to the Magdalene Cemetery, on the right at a
curve, turn around and go back the direction you came until you come to the first cattle guard on the
right. Through the cattle guard you will go up a hill. Before the next gate and close to the fence
line, on the left there is a tree with the two headstones under it. The headstones are broken in
several pieces and are not being attended. I was told there had been three headstones.
Surveyed 9/26/98. (With the sale of Steiner Ranch, there might be better roads now in 2009)

Duncan, Icy D. 8/6/1869 10/28/1882 Son of Dan and SL Duncan

Stanly, Hanibal 4/23/1892 46 yrs

I was also told that two other graves were found in the area when the land was being cleared but probably could not be found anymore.
