YOUNG
SCHOOLHOUSE CEMETERY, UPTON AREA
UPTON,
TEXAS. Upton, seven miles south of Bastrop in central Bastrop County, traces
its origins to settler J. P. Young's arrival in the area in 1847. Young was
soon joined by John and Tom Hancock and John Bright. The first community school
was a one-room log building, which was replaced in 1873 by a frame building
erected on land donated by Young. In 1892 the school was moved to a new
structure on the current site. Two years later, with the coming of the
railroad, a post office was established and the name Como was selected. When it
was found that the name was already in use elsewhere, the post office and
community became Upton.
By 1914 Upton was a station on the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad and had
a population of seventy, a cotton gin, and a general store. The next year a
church was built. But the population soon dropped to twenty-five. Although the
post office was closed in 1929, in the 1930s Upton had a community center and
three schools, two for black children and one for white. Population estimates
remained at twenty-five through most of the community's twentieth-century
history, with a brief jump to fifty in the late 1960s.

LOCATION:
Young School House Cemetery is located on the corner of Cnty Rd. 280 and 281 in
Upton, Texas (Smithville, TX postal area.) From city of Bastrop, go west, turn
left on FM 304.
Go 10 miles, turn left on Cnty Rd. 281. Church and
cemetery are located on Cnty Rd. 281, left side of road after the left turn to
Cnty Rd 280.

by the Texas Historical Commission erected next to the school house:
Young School House and Cemetery In 1872, area pioneer John P. Young (1829-1906)
donated two acres of his land for a community school and cemetery. The earliest
marked grave, that of W. T. Sanders, is dated 1874. Since then, the cemetery
has been used primarily by area settlers and their descendants.
Shortly
after the land was donated, community leaders opened a five-month term school,
which was named in honor of John Young. With the help of carpenter Samuel D.
Sanford (died 12/21/1903 blood poisoning), this school
house was constructed in 1872 of hand-hewn pine logs. Young school closed in
1907 when the rail line was laid through the Upton community (3 MI.N), and a
larger school was established there.
Although
no longer in use as a school house the building has been maintained as a
community center and has been the site of worship services for several area
congregations. Young School House Baptist Church, whose roots date to 1910,
continues to worship at this site. The building has been moved twice to make
room for more cemetery plots.
Much
of the history of this part of Bastrop County revolves around Young School
House and Cemetery, each of which has been in use for more than 100 years.

YOUNG SCHOOLHOUSE CEMETERY
A state historic marker didn’t show up in time but that failed to dim the high
spirits of Upton area residents and guests Sunday at the dedication of the
restored historic Young Schoolhouse.
On a perfect Autumn Sunday afternoon, a crowd filled the white frame school
house and church to hear speakers praise the work of local residents who
started the restoration in late 1976.
Descendants of pioneer settler J. P. Young were among the crowd of some 200
persons who thanked Chester and Liz Lee, Rosa Lee, Virgil Patterson, Irene
Schubert and others.
The school was built in 1872, moved twice and after the railroad came to Upton
and a new school was built there, the old school closed in 1907. It became a
haven for many different churches. Young School House Baptist Church now holds
regular worship services and sponsored the work to get a state historic marker,
expected to be delivered soon.
The research and restoration effort is an example of what local communities can
do to preserve the pioneer heritage of Texas, said June Pape, representing the
Bastrop County Historical Commission, and Frances Rickard, Assistant Director
of Research, Texas Historical Commission.
Built of rough hewn pine lumber, by 1976 the building was in poor physical
shape. In her history of the school, Lila Wesie Potter Scallorn Rister
described the site: “It still sits there by the side of the road, a ragged
beggar sunning.”
Today the building gleams inside.
Eugenia Schock did not know any of the local residents in October last year
when she learned a Christian congregation was worshipping in the one room
school house and she thought the historic structure should be recognized in
some way. She offered to do the paperwork to get it marked by the Texas Historical
Commission.
Persons who helped in the research such as Jewel Rosanky of Smithville are now
friends of Mrs Schoch.
Taking part in the ceremony was the Rev. Dan Porter, pastor of the Young
Schoolhouse Baptist Church, who acted as master of ceremonies. He gave the
closing benediction in front of the well tended Young School House Cemetery.

SC. Charlie originally from Talbot area, but they lived in Cutberth area when
Rebecca died sometime just after 1880 census. She supposedly buried in Macon,
GA but I've found no record. Charlie left older daughters in GA with relatives
and took young sons by wagon to TX. I am looking for her parents and other
ancestors.

Suicided at Bastrop.
Mr. Lake Cain, of this city, died in Bastrop last Saturday from the effects of
an overdose of morpine supposed to have been taken with suicidal intent. Mr.
Cain was an eppileptic sufferer and may have taken the drug to alleviate the
pain of an expected attack. Deceased leaves a brother, J. M. C. Cain, in this
city. His remains were interred at Upton. (The grave is unmarked but may be the
one next to James Michael Cain, SR with shells on top. This could also be
James' second wife.)

The Bastrop Advertiser
On
Friday night of last week a Mr. Lake Cain (son of James Michael Cain), a
resident of the
southern part of the county, registered at the Midland Hotel and was assigned a
room. It is
said he had 75 cents, in money, ten cents of which he spent for morphine, 15
cents he paid
to Mr. Wilkes for his night lodging. About 8 o'clock he went to his room and to
bed. He
had stopped the night before at the John Watts boarding house, but being unable
to get a
room for himself, changed to the Midland Hotel. It is said he was subject to
epileptic fits, and was in the habit of taking morphine when he felt the spells
coming on him. It is
supposed he took the dose between 8 and 9 o'clock, Friday night. When
discovered Saturday
morning, he was in a comatose condition. Dr. Combs was called to see him, but
the deadly
drug had got in its work, and he died between 12 and 1 o'clock. Justice Jenkins
held an
inquest, deciding that he had died from morphine administered by his own hands,
but whether
suicidal intent or not, is not known. His brother, J. M. C. Cain, came up from
Smithville
and took charge of the remains which were carried to Upton and interred.

This Indenture made and entered this the 8th day of January 1868 between Daniel
C Kelly of said County and State of the first part and J. J. Hull & Wild C.
Cleveland of said State of the second part.
Witnesseth
that the said Daniel C. Kelly for and in consideration of the sum of five
dollars to him in hand paid at and before the signing and sealing of this
presents by the said John I Hull and Wild C. Cleveland the receipt whereof is
hereby acknowledged as well as for the better securing the payment of a certain
primary note being even date with these presents and due the same date for the
sum of sixty dollars has bargained, sold and conveyed and by these presents
grant, bargain and convey unto the said John I Hull and Wild C. Cleveland a
certain sorrel horse stallion about nine years of age, to have and to hold said
mortgaged property to the said Wild C. Cleveland and John I Hull in fee simple
provided nonetheless that if the said Daniel C Kelly shall pay or cause to be
paid the aforesaid amount of sixty dollars promptly when it shall become due
the said note as well this bill of sale shall cause to be void.

To third, How long, he answers, I have known him all of his live, I first knew
him in the State of Georgia, from and after his birth, up to the present time.
To the fourth, Do you know he enlisted: Yes I do
To the fifth, what regiment: Yes, in Company B 8th
Georgia Cavalry, 1861, Baker Co, GA. He served 4 years, that
is during the war.
To the sixth, know he is unable to support himself: Yes, I know that he is not
able to support himself by labor of any sort.
To the first cross: I know this by serving in the same Company and Regiment
with the said Daniel C. Kelley and there was no other man serving in the said
Company B by said name of Daniel C. Kelley.
To second: Yes
Third: I know that his lungs are affected, and that he has had both of his legs
broken and that he is deseased generally, andn that my answer to said Direct
Interragatory No. 6 is based on my own knowledge and not on conjecture.
To the fourth cross: Yes I know he did not.

5th: I do not know what Company, but he served in the 8th Regiment Cavalry, GA
Volunteers. About the year 1863. Close to a place the name of which I know do not remember but is near Richmond
Virginia. He served from the year 1861 and returned home about April 1865.
6th: When he left this county he was not able to earn a living by labor of any
sort, but since that time I can't say whether he is or not.
To first cross: My knowledge is derived from the fact that I met him in the
service of the Confederacy during the time of his being a soldier in said
service, and I further state that I did not know of any other Daniel C Kelley
in said regiment.
2nd cross: Yes
3rd Cross: I know that he is deseased and was unable to earn a living by labor
when he was living here, I know this by being
personally acquainted with the said Daniel C Kelley.
4th cross: I know that he did not, that is there was never any mention of such
act when he returned home from the army nor has there
been any mention thereof up to the present time.

The records show that Daniel Kelley, name also borne
as D. C. Kelley, private, Company B, 62nd GA CAV, CSA, was enlisted May 31,
1862. On the company muster roll of the last mentioned organization for
November and December, 1864, the last on file, he is reported absent, detailed
to procure remount. No later record of him has been found.

The name of Daniel Kelley has not been found on the rolls, on file in this
office, of the 5th Georgia CAV, Confederate States Army, and no record has been
found of the capture or parole of a man of that name and organization.
The prisoner of war records show, however, that one D. C. Kelly, private, 5th
GA CAV, Confederate States Army, was surrendered at Tallahassee, Florida, May
10, 1865, and paroled at Albany, GA, May 18, 1865.
The Adjutant General.
There
is a civil war headstone at Young School House Cemetery in Upton, Bastrop CO,
TX but he is NOT buried there. Lindy Michael Huser put the headstone up for
him, Nancy Knight Cain Kelly and Elizabeth. She didn't know for sure where
Nancy was buried so she had the headstone put in the Kelly section but she may
be buried close to Martha Tiner, her daughter, as she lived with her.

Daniel
wouldn't take anything off anyone. He was a good man, but not one to mess with.
He would kill anybody who messed with him. In Baker County, Georgia, a
carpetbagger had taken Daniel's only riding horse. When Daniel went to get the
horse, the carpetbagger told him he liked the horse and planned to keep it.
Daniel killed the carpetbagger and rode to Natchez, Mississippi and waited for
a wagon train. Dan Kelley had black hair, black eyes, and not as tall as his
brother, William Leonard.

Families had been planning to leave Georgia for Texas for months. About 20
wagons left Georgia the morning after Daniel killed the carpetbagger, sometime
in 1872. They met Dan at Natchez and crossed by ferry. The families on the
wagon train were related. Other families who were kin had traveled on other
wagon trains. Families on the various wagon trains were Kelley, Screws, Hudler,
Tiner, Naps, Knight, Cain, Richardson, Jordan, Adams, and Hayslip. Some wagons
stopped off in East Texas around Athens and Longview. Others came to Pearidge
or Upton, as it was called then. Some settled in Van Zandt and Kaufman Counties

the one part, being of the County of Lee, Arrington H. Phillips, of the County
of Sumter, both of the state aforesaid, of the other part; witnesseth, that for
the sum of one hundred dollars, to her in hand paid, she, the said Nancy
Kelly-widow as aforesaid, on the day and year above written, bargained and
sold, and does by these presents bargain and sell unto the said Arrington H.
Phillips, all the right of Dower which she as widow of the said Andrew Kelly
had, or was in any manner entitled to, in Lot of land number 15, being, lying
and situated in the First district of the county and state aforesaid; and she
does by these presents relinquish all claim whatsoever to the said right of
dower in the said lot of land number 15 as aforesaid, and all the right, title
and appurtenances of or concerning the said dower. She warrants and defends
against herself, heirs and assigns, and all other persons whatsoever unto the

Baker
County sent many of its men to what was to be named the Eighth Georgia Calvary
at the end of the war. The Eighth Calvary was part of Fitzhugh Lee's Corps and
was with General Lee at Appomattox. Three of these men were Captain James Cain
and his half brothers, Private Daniel Coffield Kelley and Private William
Leonard Kelley.
William
Leonard Kelley was said to have fought and starved for two years.
One
member of the family was a great horseman. He would win a horse race, trade
horses and win again. Due to Calvary training, he was said to have looked great
on a horse. (This had to be Lewis Tiner)
In
1840, the family was in Lee County, Georgia.
All
three, their mother, Nancy Knight Kelley, and their families, moved to Texas
after the War of Yankee Aggression and settled in Bastrop County.
William
Leonard Kelley had to leave Georgia in a hurry. The Yankees wanted to hang him
and he went to Texas. He hopped a boxcar on a train. Someone on the boxcar hit
him on the head causing him to bite his tongue so badly,
he had a speech impediment afterward. He went back to Georgia and helped bring
his family to Texas.
He
had cancer and his son, Charles Flozzell, took him from his home with only his
clothes and the rocking chair he was sitting in. Charles had to carry him out
in this chair to the car. He placed him in the car and left. William Leonard
had a dog which tried to follow the car, but Charles would not take the dog
with him.
William
Leonard had brought a suitcase of confederate money with him from Georgia and
children treated it as play money.
William
Leonard Kelley was about five feet ten inches in height, 180 - 85 lbs., with
reddish black hair, brown eyes almost black, and freckles.

Oma Mae Screws Eastman said her mother, Tina Kelley, told her she had sat in
the lap of Jesse James when she was a little girl and Jesse James had made her
a doll. Also, she added, Frank James, Jesse James, and the Younger brothers
would stay at their home, the William Leonard Kelley place, in Bastrop County,
Texas. It was told the James' brothers were their cousins, and while at
Bastrop, they wanted to exchange horses. The Kelley's wouldn't exchange horses
because the exchange might make the family accomplices in the James' crimes.
The next morning, they had exchanged horses anyway, and put a coiled rope on
the barn floor, filled with money. The horses left were of better quality than
those taken. Some of the family said not to tell of the kinship with these
outlaws. The James and Youngers were perfect gentlemen while staying at the
family home.
Tenney was born in 1868, they came to TX in 1872. If
she was on Jesse's lap that was before age 10 so from 1872 to 1878 Jesse came
to Bastrop.

HISTORY OF THE CRIME
At about 2 o'clock, on Wednesday, June 17, 1891, Miss Ida Belle Moore, a
step-daughter of Mr
A. J. Bellamy, about 16 years old; living near Upton about eight miles below
Bastrop, visited a neighbor about one-half of a mile distant from her home. At
about 5 o'clock in the afternoon she left that neighbor's house for that home
she never reached alive. Almost in sight of home she was seized by a fiend
incarnate, choked and dragged under a one-stran barbed wire fence and carried
on through the woods to a secluded spot, where she was murdered, choked to
death and then outraged and her lifeless body left on the ground, where it was
discovered later by anxious friends cold in death.
It is needless to say the country was aroused. A runner, was sent to town and
immediately
Sheriff Davis, with a posse, and accompanied by County Attorney J. B. Price and
Hon. J. P.
Fowler, went down to ferret out the murder. Suspicion soon rested upon Tobe
Cook, a black
negro, who was placed under arrest, and who would have been instantly hung by
an outraged
populace, had not there been a shadow of doubt of his guilt and the counsel of
cooler heads
prevailed. After quiet was restored, and all danger of summary justice being
meted out to the fiend, Governor Hogg telegraphed Sheriff Davis to
"protect the prisoner at all hazards,"
adding, "there is a standing reward of $1000 for the arrest of each and
every man who assists or engages in mob law," and yet, not a dollar was
offered for the capture of the fiend who had perpetrated the double crime.

I, E. H. Perkins, hereby certify that r. W. L. Kelly Sr of Smithville, Bastrop
County, TX is the only known, living Ex Confederate soldier, who actually
served in the Confederate Army with Mr. Louis Tiner Sr and that the said Mr. W.
L. Kelly Sr's mind is in such condition that I do not think it adviseable to
attempt to obtain an affidavit regarding said service.
I also certify that I have known the said Mr. W. L. Kelly Sr and the said Mr.
Louis Tiner Sr. for more than thirty years and they are both well known to be
ex confederate soldiers.

the person whom is entrusted the paying of accounts of Louis Taylor Tiner, Sr,
who was a pensioner of the State of TX and whose file number 41359 in Bastrop.
Louis Taylor Tiner died on 6th day of September 1942 in the town of Smithville,
RFD, Upton, Bastrop County, TX at his own home. I am the penioners grand
daughter and my postoffice address is Box 344, Smithville, Texas.
I Della Marrs owner of Marrs Funeral Home, Smithville, TX, had charge of the
body of Louis Taylor Tiner on 6th day of Sept 1942. The body prepared for
burial on 7th September 1942 and warrant applied for should be issued to Mrs.
Beulah Simms and Marrs Funeral HOme.
I, J. D. Stephens, M. D. do certify that I am a practicing physician and that I
attended Louis Taylor Tiner in his last illness and am the opinion that his ailments
were Arterio Sclerosis, Endartiritis.

record of Louis Tiner who is reported to have enlisted in Co C, 2nd GA CAV,
Crew's Brigade in service in the Confederate States Army. Very

statement of service in the case of L. H. Tiner, also borne as L. Tyner, but
not as Louis Tiner, Co C 2nd GA Cav, CSA, was furnished 6/7/1924, on call for
Lewis T Tyner. Robert C. Davis, Major General, A. G. Office.
Told daughter-in-law Roberta Tiner that when he and Wright came to
Texas in a wagon, it took a year to get here.
He always stated that him and Wright had to hide in a
trunk and even though the wagon was searched they never found them in the
trunk. Why were they hiding in a trunk?

promissory notes for sixty two 50/100 Dollars each of even it all herewith
payable on the 1st of January 1881 & 82 respectively the weight of said
cash and notes is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained & sold, unto
the said Louis Tiner, all of our right, interest & claim, in used to the
following described tract of land viz. Lying and being situated on the West
side of the Colorado river, in said County & State, on the waters of
Bright's Piney and being one hundred acres of land, out of the Michael Andrews
headright, conveyed by Wlm Shaw to F. W. Dabney, and from Dabney to R. C.
Shawn, and by the Sheriff of said County as, said by us conveyes to John C.
Wilson, and reconveyed to us by the said John C. Wilson, all of said
conveyances are of Record in said County in the County Clerk's Office in
Bastrop. We expressly understood that a deed of lien is hereby retained in the
above described land and promises for the payment of the two notes afore
mentioned for sixty two 50/100 Dollars each. To have and to hold all singular
the above described tract of land will all & singular the rights, here

Texas, for and in consideration of the sum of Seventeen Hundred and Fifty
Dollars, cash in hand, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have
granted, sold and conveyed, and by these presents do grant, sell and convey
unto W. R. Searcy, of the County of Dallas, State of Texas, all that certain
tract or parcel of land, situated, lying and being in the County of Bastrop,
and State of Texas, a part of the Micah Andrews Original Survey, described by
metes and bounds as follows:
Beginning at a stone corner in the East line of the W. M. Hess 172 acre tract,
same being the SW corner of a tract of 100 acres sold by Young and Rosanky to
B. D. Merritt; Thence S 10 W. with Hess's line 572 vrs to his corner with
Farris and continuing with Farris 808 varas in all to a rock at the NW corner
of the Nott 66 acre tract; Thence East with the N line of the Nott tract 531
varas to the NE corner of same in the center of Bright's Piney Creek, and
continuing East with a line of Deloach's land, 650 varas in all to a corner
with Deloach; thence N 10 E with another line of Deloach's land 808 varas to a

land being therein described as 100 acres, more or less, to which deed
reference is here made for more definite information.

Interview
with Lewis Tiner, published in the Austin Daily Tribune February 8, 1941
This
Confederate Veteran was born in Newton, Baker Co, Georgia, September 11, 1843,
and remained in that state until the outbreak of the Civil War. He volunteered
and left his home with the Second Georgia Cavalry, and was in many of the great
battles of the war including New Hope and others, and was with General Lee's
Army when it surrendered at Appamatox.
Following
the surrender, Mr. Tiner was mustered out at Greensboro, North Carolina, and
returned to his home in Georgia. He married Miss Martha B. Kelly, February 6,
1866 and they remained in Georgia until 1872, when he and his wife and two
children embarked in an ox wagon, traveling as far as Montgomery, Alabama,
where they sold their oxen and wagon and boarded the train for Texas, landing
in McDade, Bastrop County. Later they moved to Hill's Prairie, and from there
they moved to the place he now calls his home, which is about fifteen miles
west of Smithville.
Mrs.
Tiner died December 18, 1926.
He died soon after the interview.

Family stories:
Louis told his daughter-in-law Roberta Tiner that he and his brother Wright hid
in a wagon from GA to TX and that it took a year to get here. (This contridicts
to newspaper article above)
Was told he lied about his age to join the civil war to get away from his step
mother.
Louis states that during the war he had to wear grape vine leaves on his feet
for shoes.
Louis was a good horseman. After the war he was able to keep his horse.
Documents show he was in the GA militia at the age of 16 with a rifle.
He and Martha lived in Alum Creek before moving to Upton. Supposed
to have had two children who are buried in Alum Creek Cemetery.

While riding through the pasture Saturday morning, Mr.
Louis Tiner fell from his horse and bruised himself very badly. Dr. Bryson was
called to his side and found that two ribs were pulled loose from his backbone.
He is doing as well as could be expected.

other relatives and friends of this place. Mr. Tiner was one of the pioneer
citizens of this community.
Story
goes that Wright Tiner, Andrew Nathan Kelley, and Landy Schubert were running
from the law for bootlegging and went to OK. Nathan and Landy came back to Upton
but Wright stayed. Andrew spent time in the penitentiary. Landy stated that he
would dress up like a woman, with fake hair, a hat and in a dress, and take the
train back home to visit his mother. When the sheriff died (either Castleberry
or Townsend) Landy came home for good. Landy went up to the jail and told the
new sheriff to come outside and get him. The sheriff never came out so Lancy
went home as was never messed with.

Family Of Mrs. C. F. Kelley Here For Reunion.
Mrs. Charles F. Kelley, 504 Cedar Street, celebrated her 80th birthday January
20 with all
of her five children attending, as well as a niece whom she raised.
Mrs. Kelley was born in Colquitt, Georgia, on January 20, 1876, and came to
Texas with her
parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William R. Tiner, when she was eleven years old.
They came
most of the way by boat to Galveston, and from there by wagon to the Upton
Community,
where they settled. She was married in 1896 to Charles F. Kelley, now deceased.
They spent
most of their lives on the farm, moving to Bastrop some ten years ago in order
to be near
their children and their families, Mrs. Ferrell Smith and Mrs. Louis Smith.
Another daughter, Mrs. Ancel E. Young, formerly of Bastrop, now resides in Fort
Worth. Mrs. Kelley has two sons, Charles F. Kelley Jr. of Opelousas, LA, and
Jack W. Kelley of Lake Charles, LA. The niece whom she raised, Mrs. Corbin U.
Terry, lives in San Antonio, Texas.
Besides her children, she had five granddaughters present to help her
celebrate, Mrs. Ray
Durham of Fort Worth, Mrs. Larry Turner of Bastrop, Mrs. John Beck of Flatonia,
Mrs. Alvin
Dunn of Giddings and Judy Kelley of Lake Charles, LA. Mrs. Terry's two
children, Dennis
and Geralyn; one great granddaughter, Cherie Durham of Fort Worth, Ronnie and
Danny Beck of
Flatonia; Ray Durham, Jr, of Fort Worth and David Kelley Turner of Bastrop,
were present.
The beautiful pink and white birthday cake was baked by her granddaughter, Mrs.
Turner.

the company muster rull for July and August, 1863, he is reported present. The
name B S Webb has not been found on the muster roll of said company dated June
30, 1864, the last on file. This roll, however, shows one B. H. Webb, with the
same date and place of enlistment, but it does not show whether he was present
or absent at that time.
The name B S Webb has not been found on the rolls, on file in this office, of
Co, D 12th Regiment, MS CAV, CSA. Signed

Inasmuch as you have already received the Mortuary Warrant which issued on
account of the death of Mr. B S Webb and your application for pension on his
service record has been approved, on which approval you will receive your first
warrant about May 30, 1936, there is no further benefit which can issue to the
relatives of Mr. Webb other than you may apply for a headstone for his grave if
you desire. These stones are furnished by the United States Governmant. At any
time you desire blank forms for making application for such headstone you
should write the Quartermaster General, Washington, DC.
In making out an application for a headstone you will probably need the

School Cemetery.
Mrs. Went was a native of Mississippi, born 1853. Before her marriage
to James I Went May 18, 1871, in Louisiana, she was Miss Nancy Octavia
Blackwood,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Blackwood. In 1909 she with her husband came
to Bastrop county and Smithville where she has made her home since. Her husband
died December 31, 1918, since which time Mrs. Went had made her home with
her children. She was the mother of nine children, six of whom survive her.
They are: Mr. John T Went, Goldfield, Texas; Mrs. Lee Williams, Fowlerton:
Rust Went, Fowlerton; Clyde Went, San Antonio; W. H. Went, Rosanky; and Claude
Went, Fowlerton.
For sometime before her death Mrs. Went had been visiting a son in San
Antonio and had planned to visit another son, Henry Went, here within a few
days.
She was a member of the Baptist Church and had lived a consistent Christian
life. She was a devoted mother and has many loyal friends in all parts of
the country who deeply mourn her
departure.

JOHN W WILLIAMS DEAD.
Died-At his home, near Rosanky, Friday Feb. 21st, 1902, after
a few days
illness, John W. Williams, of pneumonia, at the age of 75 years.
Deceased was born at Campbellsville, Green County, KY, in the year 1827,
locating at Hill's Prairie, Bastrop county. He was well and favorably known
by the old settlers throughout this part of the State, Honest, industrious,
kind-hearted, his friends were many.
He was a soldier, in the Texas Rangers, serving in Capt. Bigfoot Wallace's
command, experiencing the many hardships of Texas frontier life in those
trying days.
He was also a Confederate, soldier, serving during the civil war, returning
home at its close, to begin anew the duties of life. And the
support of his
family.
A brave soldier, a good, useful citizen, he interested himself in every
enterprise bettering the condition of his country.
He was a Christian, a devout member of the Methodist Church he dearly
loved his church and was ever found laboring in the cause of
Christianity.
On Sunday his remains were consigned to mother earth, in Young's Church
graveyard; Rev. Weems Wooten, pastor of the Methodist Church, at Smithville;
officiating, who, in his sermon, touchingly referred to the Christian virtues
of the deceased.
After a life of three score and fifteen years, he quietly lies down in
the tomb, in peaceful repose, his soul having arisen to the celestial Home
above, where all is peace and happiness.
He leaves nine children, six sons and three daughters, all grown to manhood
and womanhood, with many friends to mourn his death.
