     Edward P. Newman born in Alsace-Lorraine, in France. One of 15 children he was placed in French Navy as a Cadet at a young age. When his training ship visited Savannah, GA he deserted to seek a new life in America. He was in Georgia when the Civil War started so he served on CSA blockade runner out of Savannah. Not being a citizen at the wars end he caught a sailing ship out of the country for several years before being able to re-enter the United States.

 

     Edward came to Chilton area in 1868 to work for a land and cattle company. He met and married a young widow, Henrietta Lane with two children, in 1881 and settled down in Chilton. Because he could speak several different languages he was suited for the job of Justice of the Peace and served for several terms.

 

     Henrietta Grimes was orphaned in Shellman, Randolph County, Georgia. Her mother died at or near the time of her birth. Her father, Jehu Grimes never returned from the Civil War. An Aunt Narcissus Grimes Miller took her to raise. The family moved first to Dale County, Alabama then to Branchville in Milam County, TX. She first married Frank Lane and after his death married Edward P. Newman. The Miller family are buried in the Little River Baptist Cemetery at Maysfield, Milam County, TX.
