Reasonable evidence from census records 1800-1850 that Thomas R. had a son Thomas Phiney Plaster born in N. C., married to Dolly Samuels in Giles County, Tenn. who moved with Dolly and widowed mother Margaret Henderson to Texas before March 1, 1836, where Thomas P. Plaster had fought in the war of Texas Independence. Extensive records are available on his life in Texas and he is recorded in the 1850 and 1860 census. He and Dolly had 9 children, including 6 boys. His Plaster name can be traced to (through his son John) descendents on the west coast of United States. Military service ; in Sept 1813 Thomas went seventy miles through near wilderness from his place in TN to Nashville to enlist as a private in Steele's Co. of mounted riflemen. the first thing the company did was to ride back over the same seventy miles, passing through his neighborhood about three weeks after he had left it, on its way to the gulf coast. Thomas & his horse dropped out without pay, sorer but wiser, no doubt, because the next time in 1815 he enlisted in Mississippi, saving the 140 mile detour, & this time he was a Sergeant, in Neilson's detachment, Cook's Co, of mounted riflemen, and was in battle of New Orleans. The modern card record (abstract from the original complete records) says that he was NOT AT MUSTER of MOUNTED GUNNERS. accounted for as sick in camp, & was paid another card lists him as Sergeant gunner (artillery) original record no longer exist. His father & son were in artillery, and he was not with the riflemen. The above came from Richard E. He married Dolly Samuel and moved to Texas in 1835. Three of the nine children born to them died in infancy. Captain Tom Plaster served with Sam Houston's army and was in charge of one of the cannons which did so much good work during the Battle of San Jacinto. His name is engrained on the plaque dedicate to the heroes of that history-making engagement. An interesting document telling of Captain Plaster's duties with the Texas Army is a quartermasters report made out by himself. It is written in longhand on a heavy sheet of white paper eighteen by twenty five inches in size, in English which even at that date retained the old style "S" resembling the "F " of today The report was written at "Headquarters Camp Johnson, La Boca, November 22, 1835."It shows that beans, corn, and flour comprised the bigger portion of the supplies issued the Texas soldiers at that time. While there was some coffee and sugar, it was in limited quantities. Game was plentiful, and wild deer, fowl and various kind of game could be substituted for prepared meats. The report shows no meat issued during the two months which the account covered. The weather was beginning to get cold, however, and blankets and shirting made up a big portion of the issue for the period, a total of four hundred yards of shirting being included. It is supposed that the shirting was issued to the men, and that they made their own. There were four hundred thirty-six blankets issued, one box of "fine shoes" and two and a half of what are described as "coarse shoes". The Complete report shows thirty-two cartons issued, seven sacks of coffee, two and one-forth boxes of brown sugar, two and two-thirds barrels of flour, and two and a half " fierccos " of rice. It is thought that this designates a special way of packing rice for shipment by water. Captain Plaster received a grant of two-thirds of a league from the Republic of Texas, which was recorded in August, 1838. The land was in the northern part of Grimes County. There he built a home out of large logs hewn by negro slaves; the homestead was near the Plaster Cemetery. In the 1840's he hauled freight from Harrisburg (Houston) to points as far as Palestine, Texas, along the old San Antonio Road. The stagecoach which made this run used his house as a stopping point, and he acted as voluntary postmaster for letters left there for people in the vicinity--from 1845 to 1854, Sam Houston, on his trip from Washington-on-the-Brazos, would remain overnight with him and then journey on to Huntsville. In his later years and until his death, March 27, 1861, Tom Plaster served as doorkeeper for the House of Representatives at Austin. He died in Austin and because of the distance and bad weather he was buried there. Limited historical data and histories of individual families indicate that among those who settled around Bedias between 1821 and 1836 included Thomas Plaster. By 1836 most of the families lived north of the present town of Bedias on Sims, North Bedias and Bowman Creeks. The families of Thomas Plaster, John Corner and Isaac Midkiff were sufficiently close to each other to be called neighbors. Early cemeteries indicate settlements and neighborhoods. Prior to 1850 there were in use three cemeteries: Bethel Cemetery, near Grimes-Madison County line; Carter Cemetery, extreme northeast corner of the county near the North Bedias Creek; and the Plaster Cemetery, near Sims Creek and the old Plaster homestead. The old Bedias Baptist Cemetery dares from about 1850. To Thomas Pliny Plaster goes the credit for establishing the original white settlement which was to become Bedias, he having arrived in 1835 and cleared land for a plantation. The community was dubbed Plasterville, a name familiar today to many Bedias citizens. (2) Wallace Davis, "My Home Town, The Bedias Story".Pgs. 24-26, 35, 204-205 Since my earlier notes referenced H.F. Plaster's father, Thomas Pliny Plaster, here is a quick note on him from the Texas State Library. In addition to the well publicized military service of T.P. Plaster at the Battle of San Jacinto-4/1836 (Battle for Texas Independence from Mexico), I also received confirmation of his service in the Mexican War from 4/27/1847-6/5/1847(seems to have been a short war for all regiments). T.P. Plaster was a Second Lieutenant in James Gillaspie's Company which was recruited primarily at San Antonio, Texas for federal service. Battle of San Jacinto PLASTER, THOMAS PLINEY--Born in Giles County, Tennessee on June 6, 1804 and came to Texas in February, 1836. In Comptroller's Military Service record No. 5717 it is certified that Mr. Plaster enrolled March 1, 1836 as lieutenant in Captain L. B. Frank's Company of Rangers and served as such until April 1st. From April 2 to June 27, he served as first sergeant of artillery commanded by Captain Isaac N. Moreland participating in the Battle of San Jacinto manning there one of the two cannons known as the "Twin Sisters". He acted as quartermaster sergeant under George W. Poe, Commander of the First Battalion of Artillery from July 3 to August 1, 1836 when he was appointed Regimental Quartermaster of the First Brigade First Regiment of Cavalry, serving until August 23, 1836. On January 3, 1838 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 1615 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 6 to June 2,1836. On December 25, 1839, he received Bounty Certificate No. 9368 for 640 acres of land for having served from June 6 to December 6, 1836. On July 10, 1838 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 433 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. He was issued Headright Certificate for a league and labor of land, by the Harrisburg County Board February 3, 1838 in which it is stated that he arrived in Texas in February 1836. During the U. S. - Mexican war, Mr. Plaster served as Second Lieutenant in Captain James Gillaspie's Company, First Regiment of Texas Mounted Volunteers, Colonel J. T. Hays from April 25 to June 27, 1847. After statehood, Mr. Plaster represented Grimes County in the House of Representatives of the First Legislature. He was Door-keeper for the house of Representatives at the time of his death at Austin, March 27, 1861. The State of Texas had a monument erected at his grave in the State Cemetery at Austin in 1937. Mr. Plaster was married to Dolly Samuel, who was born in Giles County, Tennessee, March 22, 1808 and died June 21, 1857. She is buried in the cemetery in Bedias, Grimes County. HENRY FRANKLIN4 PLASTER (THOMAS PLINY3, THOMAS R.2, JOHN1) was born March 22, 1842 in Bedias Grimes Co., TX., and died January 06, 1905 in Bedias, Grimes Co., TX buried Plaster Cemetery. He married MARGARET SUSANNAH MIDKIFF April 24, 1862, daughter of ISAAC MIDKIFF and MARYELLEN JONES. She was born December 18, 1848 in Grainger Co., TN, and died May 03, 1926 in Bedias, Grimes Co., TX buried Plaster Cemetery. Henry was an infantry copal. under Col. E. B. Nichols, Fifth regiment. A private in this regiment was O. G. Ross Population of Bedias passed three hundred in 1885, New families had joined the community to grub "new ground" plots and seek their fortunes in cotton farming. The law of supply and demand called for new stores to furnish the growing market with food, clothing, implements and knickknacks. In 1884 many stores were opened, one was opened by Henry Frank Plaster. Built the first school in the community of Plasterville. Charter was granted, December 14, 1887, for Gihon Lodge No, 651, and Masonic work was begun June 16, 1888, by H. B. Stoddard, District Deputy Grand Master. H. F. Plaster was one of the names that appeared on the petition that composed the list of charter members. Henry was also a charter member of The Queen Ester Chapter No. 104, organized September 1, 1889. served as Senior Deacon. H. F. Plaster a Confederate Veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in Anderson, Grimes Co., Texas on 4/16/1862. He was in Hood's Texas Brigade (later called Gregg's Brigade) in the 4th Texas Infantry, Company G (Grimes County Greys). His enlistment is also cited in the book "Hood's Texas Brigade: A Compendium". (State documents also reference that he may have also been in the 25th Texas Cavalry, Company K, but primary reference seems to be infantry related with the 4th Texas.) Although the 4th Texas had a short stint in the Western theater of the war (under General Longstreet-Chickamauga, etc.), they were primarily associated with Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. State documents cite that Company G "served in all the main battles from Elthaius Landing (Va.) - (to) Gettysburg - and finally at the surrender at Appomattox Court House". H.F. Plaster, as with all other Army of Northern Virginia survivors on that day, is listed as paroled at Appomattox Court House 4/12/1865. Paroled, during this time, was the term used to allow the surrendered army to lay down their arms, take the oath of allegiance to the United States, and then they were free to make their way back home. Henry was married on 4/25/1862, prior to leaving for the war. His fiance's parents agreed to the marriage under the condition that the girl was not to live with Henry until after he returned from the war. The reason seems two-fold. The most obvious being that her parents did not want her "spoiled" if Henry did not return from that war. The second is that she was only 13 years old when she married. Henry was an infantry Corp under Col. E. B. Nichols, Fifth regiment. A private in this regiment was O. G. She married DUNK BRIMBERRY September 12, 1906. He died 1916. Notes for OVIE LEONA PLASTER: Just north of Bedias in Grimes County is a small community called Plasterville. On October 30, 1883 the seventh of ten children was born to Emanuel and Amanda Crowson Plaster, Her name was Ovie Leona Plaster. Ovie enjoyed a happy childhood and learned to play a banjo early in life. While she was young, her father became blind. Her father Emanuel Plaster decided to travel around in the area with his musical family and provide entertainment to help bring in money. The talented family once narrowly escaped having their wagons engulfed by the swollen waters of the Trinity River after a big rain, but Ovie pulled the mules up in time and averted disaster. It was on one of their traveling musical trips that Ovie Plaster met Dunk Brimberry of Walker County. They married September 12, 1906 and the father , James Brimberry, gave the newlyweds 50 acres of land in the Henry A. White League. Together, they cleared the land for farming and built their house. The only child born to this union was a daughter, Reba Elizabeth Brimberry, born August 16, 1913. On the tenth anniversary of their weeding, Ovie buried her husband, who had died of yellow jaundice. Left to bear her grief and raise a three year old daughter, Olie had only fifteen dollars with which to make a crop that year. Ovie's mother came to live with her at this time and they began to farm, rising everything needed except a few staples. Once on a thirteen mile trip to town for staples, a bridge washed out and Ovie was late in the night reaching her home where she found a very worried mother and daughter. She was good at raising hogs which had free range in those days. And her mother was noted for her hog-calling. the little family would call up the hogs often enough to feed them corn and provide an opportunity for Ovie to catch and mark them. During this time, the ever self-sufficient Ovie learned to do carpentry work about the home place and even constructed a brick chimney onto the house. In an effort to add to their finances, Ovie took on the job of boarding oil well hands who worked on the nearby Jones well, this set in motion her idea of continuing a food service business and when Reba was nine years old, she moved her small family to Huntsville and rented the Royal Cafe which was located next to Northington's grocery store on the corner of 11th Street and Avenue K. Each day, Reba was sent to the grocery store to buy two pounds of chili meat and one pound of tallow for the chili-loving customers. Later, Ovie ran a boarding house across from the old jail on Avenue K. She stayed in business in Huntsville until about 1932 to see that Reba got and education. Prior to their living in town, Reba either had to walk three miles to the school in the Falba community or board away from home. When the depression hit, cafe business dropped off. Olie decided to tear down her house on the "Brimberry Place" and move into land deeded to her by her mother located on Highway 75 north in the Ten Mile Spring community. Once again she began farming, She was forty-nine by then. She also sold cemetery monuments which were installed by her son-in-law, Raymond Stewart, who had married Reba on September 16, 1933. Previously, the Ten Mile Spring community had been called "Yero" where there was a post office. This was in about 1904 and was a favorite stopping place for freight wagons running between Houston and Ft. Worth. After the Yero post office closed, the government never reopened another. Olie's long life was filled to capacity with had work on which she thrived until her very last years. Plowing with a mule or building a fence was just an everyday chore. And, not having enough to do, she decided to begin an upholstery business. she had some doubts about upholstery work but after being encouraged to recover some car seats for W. J. fails she embarked upon yet another profitable business that led to many years of enjoyment an excellent upholstering. she upholstered her last piece of furniture when she was ninety years of age. Her industrious nature and love of challenges earned her many friends and acquaintance. Mr Harvey Heath once proposed that she get involved in politics and run for county commissioner of her precinct, but she kept to her farming. She had a pet mule named "Mary". In 1952, Orville Ewing of Pritchett, Colorado came down the highway with his traveling menagerie. He struck a bargain with Ovie for old "Mary" and drove off in his wagon with the mule hitched alongside other mules, a goat and a rooster. Just a little over seven months prior to her 100th birthday, Ovie passed away and was laid to rest beside her beloved Dunk in the Brimberry Cemetery. Of the nine children in her family she lived the longest. Preceding her in death were Mary, Luther, Daisy (these three died the year Ovie was born), Homer (married Cinderella Clark), Celatha (Married Will Smith), Molly (Married Jeff Clark), Dora (Married Frank Cook), Mertie Jane (Married Albert Hart), and Annie. Ovie's father-in-law, James Brimberry, was born December 28, 1855. Her mother-in-law, Sue Sheeler, was born September 24, 1852 in Alabama.
