Funeral services for Emelina Austin Simmons, 84, of Brazoria will be held 1 p. m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Brazoria, with the Rev. E. S. Fields officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery, Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be until 6 p. m. today at E. Viola and Son Funeral Home, Brazoria; wake from 6 to 9 p. m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Simmons was born May 30. 1909 in Matagorda County and died July 31, 1993 at her residence.

She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, Brazoria.

Survivors include six brothers, Edmond Austin of Brazoria, Neal Austin Jr. and Herman Austin, both of Cedar Lane, Crawford Austin of Cedar Lake, Ellis James Austin of Austin and Cary Austin of Arcola; two sisters, Christene Harrison of Galveston and Johnnie Mae Thomas of Cedar Lane.

Pallbearers include Howard Austin, Joseph Austin, E. W. Austin, Roosevelt Johnson, Gary Austin, Calvin Austin, Wash Hawkins and Kenneth Spann.

Honorary pallbearers will be her six brothers.

Funeral services for Annie Lee Smith, 72, of Cedar Lake, will be held Saturday, July 30, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, with the Rev. K. W. Bree, eulogist. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 3 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

She was born June 19, 1933, to William Paige and Carrie Paige, and passed away, July 25, 2005, in Cedar Lake.

Survivors include: three daughters, Lahoma Parks and Sharon Bivens, both of Cedar Lake, and Jackie Simmons of Brazoria; and one son, Bobby Smith of Cedar Lake; two sisters, Erma Lee Johnican and Patricia Randon, and three brothers, Haywood Brown, Casanova Brown and Irving Brown; also a host of grands, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Arthur Monroe Smith

February 10, 1949 - June 30, 2020

A public viewing for Arthur Monroe Smith, 71, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Bay City, Texas, will be on Friday, July 10, 2020 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Duncan~Roberts Funeral Home, 2500 Avenue C, Bay City, Texas 77414. 

A private Graveside Service for the family of Arthur Smith will be on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 11 a.m. at the Smith Family Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas. 

Arthur lovingly known by his family as “Puncho” and “Big Easy” to his coworkers was born to Matthew Smith Sr. and Evangie Merchant Smith in Manvel, Texas on February 10, 1949 and he passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 in Houston.  He was the 5th of 15 children. 

Arthur had a loving relationship with Sandra Manley who was his companion, confidant and friend.  She lovingly remained by his side until he made his life transition. 

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Peggy Knowles, Alma Spiller and Matthew Smith Jr.

He will be lovingly missed by his siblings, Elnora Moore, Roosevelt Smith, Jessie Brooks, Nancy Harmon (Kenny), Grace King, Purvis Smith, Elma Allen, William Smith (Jerilyn), Patricia Williams (Gregory), Sharon Williams, Kennetha Tolbert (Henry); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

On March 4, 1918, in Matagorda County, Texas a daughter was born to John and Peggy Smith, named Betty Smith.

She confessed Christ at an early age and became a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas.

Betty succumbed to her illness, Wednesday, April 25, 1973 at 11:00 A. M.

Betty leaves to mourn her passing, her mother, Mrs. Peggy Smith; Father, Mr. John Smith, Sr.; three sisters; nine brothers, a number of nieces; nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Evangie Lee Smith, 65, of Bay City will be held 2 p. m. Saturday at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake with Brother Temon of Houston officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation hours will be held until 9 p. m. today at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 17, 1925, to Hammie Merchant and Ophelia Durgan Merchant of Cedar Lake and died June 2, 1991, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Matthew Smith Sr. of Bay City; nine daughters and five sons-in-law, Elnora “Betty” Moore and Cunnie Moore, Jessie Lee Brooks, Alma Lois Spiller and Kenneth Spiller, Nancy Lee Wright, Elma Gladys Allen and Artis Allen, Patricia Mandeen Mayberry and Ricky Mayberry, Sharon LaVon Smith and Kennetha Michelle Smith, all of Bay City, and Grace Ann King and Donnie King of Gary, Ind.; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Matthew Smith Jr., Arthur Smith, Roosevelt Smith and Sonya Smith, all of Houston, Purvis Smith and William Charles Smith and Annette Smith of Bay City; two sisters, Willie Mae Bright of Freeport and Frances Jones of Brazoria; two brothers, Phillip Merchant of Bay City and Norris Parks of Cedar Lake; four aunts, Matilda Woodard and L. B. Bonner of Cedar Lake, Corine Anderson of Sweeny and Lorraine Martinez of Seguin; and three uncles, A. J. Durgan of Palacios, James Durgan of Houston and Mack Durgan of Galveston; 42 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Ann Knowles, who died July 2, 1988.

Pallbearers will be Cunnie Moore Jr., Larry Moore, Curtis Moore, Alvin Brooks III, Harry Brooks, Anthony “Jake” Smith, William Charles Smith Jr., Edwin Knowles Jr., John Rutherford and Roosevelt Smith.

Honorary pallbearers are Mrs. Smith’s 14 children.

Gus Smith

September 6, 1896 – January 30, 1973

Mr. Gus Smith, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Smith, was born September 6, 1896 at Cedar Lake, Matagorda County, Texas.

At an early age he confessed faith in Christ and became a member of Bethlehem Christian Church under the pastorage of Rev. Henry Woodard.

He married Miss Rhoda James in 1938. To this union two sons were born.

He departed this life Tuesday, January 30, 1973 at 4:15 P. M. in Community Hospital, Freeport, Texas.

He leaves a devoted wife, Mrs. Rhoda Smith; two sons, Calvin James and Robert Louis of Brazoria, Texas; two grandchildren; one brother, John Smith of Cedar Lake; countless nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service: Saturday, February 3, 1973, 1:00 P. M., Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas, Rev. Lloyd Brown, officiating.

Active pallbearers: R. L. Smith, Westley Smith, Marcene Smith, Matthes Smith, Arthur Smith and Coleman Smith.

Hazel Marie Smith

Funeral service for Hazel Marie Smith, 82, of West Columbia will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Sweeny “Fifth Street” Church of Christ, 211 5th Street, Sweeny, Texas 77480 where Bro. David Wright will be the officiator and Bro. George McKnight will be the eulogist. Burial will follow at Smith Family Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be on Friday, February 16, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at E. Viola & Son Funeral Home in West Columbia.

Hazel was born on June 14, 1935 in Old Ocean, Texas to Sherman Baldridge, Sr. and Pearl (Baugh) Baldridge and passed away on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018 at Woodlake Nursing Center in Clute surrounded by her loving family. 

She had an infectious smile that touched the lives of many. Her homemaking skills were commendable. She opened her heart and her home to everyone. Being a faithful member of the Church of Christ Faith she was honored as church mother and held the record keeping position for many years. Hazel was a cosmetologist by trade and enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends and family. Her most favorite pastime was spending quality time with her grandchildren. Her loving and witty way will always be remembered. Her kind spirit never forgotten.

Preceding Hazel in death are her parents, husband, Arthur Smith, Sr.; son, Arthur Smith, Jr.; two brothers, Leo Baldridge, Sr. and Arthur Baldridge; one sister, Pauline (Baldridge) Matthews.

Left with cherished memories are her two sons, Stevie Louis Smith, Sr. of West Columbia and Fredrick Smith of Houston; four daughters, Pearl Smith of West Columbia; LaVon (Horace) Lemons of Freeport; Arthurene Smith of Houston and Cynthia (Robert) Spears of Angleton; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; two brothers, Sherman Baldridge, Jr. and Tom (Bessie) Baldridge, three sisters, Johnnie Mae Brown, Evelyn Donley and Vallie Baldridge all of West Columbia as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was born in Sargent, Texas, Sunday, June 15, 1930, to John Smith, Sr. and Peggy Monroe Smith, and passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000 at Mission Oaks Nursing Center in San Antonio.

Survivors include: one sister, Lucinda Smith of Bay City; six brothers, Matthew Smith and Lula, Albert James Smith and Franklin Smith all of Bay City, Wesley Smith and Mary Lee of Sweeny, Marseen Smith and Elvadon and Robert Smith and Mamie, all of Cedar Lake; two sisters-in-law, Eliza Wrenn of Galveston, and Hazel Smith of West Columbia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Kasandra Mignon Smith

Funeral services for Kasandra Mignon Smith, 20, of Sweeny, Texas were held Saturday, July 10, 2004, at 1 p.m., at First Baptist Church, Bay City, with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman, pastor, and the Rev. T.L. Richardson, eulogist. Burial followed at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

She was born in Freeport, Texas, January 22, 1984, to Kenneth Smith and Linda Baugh Smith, and passed away July 7, 2004, at Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas.

She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. Under the leadership of the Rev. A.H. Floyd, she united with First Sacred Memorial Christian Church. On November 25, 2001, she united with the New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. T.L. Richardson. Throughout life, she kept the faith.

Kasandra attended public school in the Bay City Independent School District, and was a graduate of Bay City High School. During high school, she was honored as Ms. BCHS and homecoming queen. She also served as senior class treasurer, Athletic manager, and was a member of PALS, the Key Club, Girl's Interact, the Student Council and FFA. After graduation, she pursued further studies at Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas.

She leaves to cherish her beautiful memories: her loving parents, Kenneth and Linda Baugh Smith of Sweeny, Texas; her grandparents, Eddie and Lovie Grice Baugh of Sweeny, and Lucinda Smith of Bay City; and a great-grandmother, Mittie Davis of Sweeny; also seven aunts, Naomi Dickson and Conrad of Brazoria, Norma Baugh of Sweeny, Terry Murray and Kenneth of Huntsville, Dinah Lovelady and Walter of Conroe, Janet Spiller and Raymond and Angela Wright and Leonard all of Houston, and Mary Baugh of Bay City; and three uncles, Anthony Smith of Clear Lake, Douglas Smith and Ingrid of Bay City, and Eddie Baugh, Jr. of Hitchcock; she also leaves her cousins, Keith, Kim, Kesha, Ashley, Albert, Felecia, Chris, Kennisha, Latisha, Jason, Stacie, and Quenin; also her best friends, Traylor Huitt and Perrylon Eaton, and dear to her heart, Jay, Kelli, Traylor and Rachael Huitt, an enormous host of other relatives and a family of many friends.

He was a member of the Christian church.

Survivors include his parents, Annie Lee Smith and Pinknie Smith, both of Cedar Lake; three sisters, Sharon and Lahoma of Cedar Lake; twin brother, Bobbie Smith of Cedar Lake; his fiancée, Brenotta Groves; stepfather, Norris Parks; grandfather, the Rev.
