George F. Agnew Flora A. Agnew  Mr. George F. Agnew Mr. George F. Agnew died at the family residence north of Bay City Saturday about 2 p. m. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. G. F. Agnew; two daughters, Mrs. Jack Hill of Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Sims Bess of Lake Charles, Louisiana; one son, V. H. Agnew of Bay City, and two brothers, W. C. Agnew, Jr., of Village Grove, Illinois, and B. Henry of Fort Union, Ohio. Mr. Agnew was one of the county’s most successful farmers and has been in our midst for a number of years. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:30 at the First Baptist Church, Rev. Odis Rainey officiating. The active pallbearers were John Sutherland, E. M. Bell, E. A. Campbell, Wm. Sansing, Jeff Mangum and R. F. Anderson. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery, with Taylor Brothers directing. The Rev. Odis Harris and Dr. Allen O. Webb will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Agnew passed away here Monday. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ida Mae Hill of Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Frances Bess of Bay City, and one son, V. H. of Bay City.

Funeral Services For Vernice Agnew Are Held Sunday Final rites for Vernice Homer Agnew, a Matagorda County resident for 52 years, were held at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Marvin Cole, officiating. Agnew, who died Friday, was a farmer and resided on the Wharton Highway. He was born in Ohio. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. James Patterson, Old Ocean; a son, George W. Agnew, Bay City; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Mae Hill, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Frances Railsback, Bay City. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

J. H. Barber  Mr. J. H. Barber The call eternal came with the twilight last Tuesday and the one chosen to go was Mr. J. H. Barber of Markham. Quickly as he had often wished to do, he left the earth-life for that home not made with hands. At four-thirty o’clock on the following afternoon a multitude of relatives and friends gathered at the late residence and Reverend Drake, pastor of the Methodist church of which the departed was a staunch member, conducted the funeral service. The body was laid to rest in Cedarvale cemetery in Bay City. Pallbearers were W. F. Jesse, W. C. Mersfelder, W. B. Killebrew, F. C. Miller, Luther Robertson and T. L. Walker. Mr. J. H. Barber was born in Round Rock, Texas, in 1867. In 1896, he united in marriage with Miss Mary Thompson. To this union were born two children, Harold and Etta. Twenty-eight years ago Mr. Barber came to Markham to teach school. After teaching for some time he entered the mercantile business, which he followed until his death. He is survived by his wife, two children, three grandchildren, Marietta, Graham and Irene Barber, two brothers, A. M. and Joe Barber, both of Rockdale and three sisters, Mrs. Stella Bryant of Thorndale, Mrs. Ellen Grimes of Palestine and Mrs. Sophronia Walker of Corpus Christi. Mr. Barber was a christian gentleman. Unusually high in ideals, standing for the best in citizenship, kind and considerate toward family and associates, he was indeed one whom all delight to honor. For thirty-one years he was a faithful member and earnest worker in the Methodist church. All worthy enterprises could count on his support. His two children he reared to be upright Christian citizens, a help to their communities. His beloved wife knew from him only kindness. All who have been associated with him feel that they, too, are bereft in a very real sense. We who remain must carry on; to him that is gone the words have been spoken: “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things. I will set thee over many things, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”

Charles E. “Chuck” Carr Funeral services for Charles E. “Chuck” Carr, 89, of Bay City were scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church of Bay City with the Rev. W. E. Dugger Jr. officiating. Burial to follow in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City. Mr. Carr was born Nov. 7, 1898, in Richmond, Texas, to Bert and Ida Fay McCauley Carr and died Sept. 8 1988, at Matagorda House, Bay City. Mr. Carr received his A. B. S. degree in animal husbandry from Texas A & M University in 1921. He was awarded the Golden Circle Certificate of Sul Ross Classes from Texas A&M University in May 1971, the State of Texas Certificate of Recognition of Outstanding Older Texan in May 1974, the Resolution Commanding from the Commissioner’s Court of Matagorda County for 23 years of work at the Veterans Department in December 1978, the American Legion Citation for Meritorious Service, and Veo Appreciation Award for Veterans City Service Officer from the Bay City High School. He was a member of the Century Club at Texas A & M for 17 years, was a 32nd degree Mason, Shriner Knights Temple, member of Bay City Chamber of Commerce for many years and a member of the Methodist church. He was a veteran of World War I and retired in January 1980 from the position of Veterans Service Officer for Matagorda County. Survivors include his wife, Lela Virginia Carr of Bay City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Florence Lenore and James K. Martins of Houston and Charlene Faye and Julian O. Renken of Lufkin; three grandchildren, Barbara Corley and husband, Wade, of College Station, Wes Allen Renken of Lufkin and Virginia Elizabeth Renken of Lufkin; and two nephews, Robert E. Insall Sr. of Houston and Henry E. Insall Jr. of Beaumont. Pallbearers include Ben Thorpe, Bob Renfro, Vim Rye, Wayne Head, George Durett, Cecil Gregory, A. J. Richey and Kirk Carr. Daily Tribune, September 1988 Leila Virginia Willenberg Carr Leila Virginia Willenberg Carr, 88, of Bay City passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 1995 at Matagorda General Hospital. She was born September 15, 1907 in Weimar to Edward Robert and Mary Emma Boykin Willenberg. She was married to C. E. “Chuck” Carr on Aug. 8, 1929. She was a loved member of the Bay City community since 1947, a member of the First United Methodist Church, and a member of the Weslyean Service Guild. She was also a member of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary for Matagorda General Hospital, a member of the Eastern Star, a member of the American Legion Post 11 Ladies Auxiliary. She has worked as an Administrative Secretary, Bookkeeper, Journalist and Teacher. She was a former Tax Assessor-Collector for the City of Bay City, was one of the first Legal Secretaries in the State of Texas, served as a contributing writer for The Daily Tribune for many years, and she was recognized as the Bay City Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1976. She was active in her many organizations and volunteer work including community scouting programs until 1993 when her health declined. She will be sorely missed by the community. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Florence Carr & James Martins of Houston and Charlene Carr Renken of Bay City; one brother, Kenneth P. Willenberg of Freeport; three grandchildren, Barbara Renken Corley of Lufkin, Virginia Elizabeth Renken of Austin, Wes Allen Renken of California; and a great-grandson, Scott Edward Corley of Lufkin. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Friday, December 8, 1995 at the First United Methodist Church of Bay City with Rev. Michael Toland and Rev. Horace McMillan officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Henry Insall, Robert Insall, James Martins, Joe King, Tom Stanley, Pete Snell, Gardner Savage, and Jeff Cottam. Erin Michelle Causgrove  Erin Michelle Causgrove Graveside services for Erin Michelle Causgrove of Bay City will be held noon Saturday at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City with the Rev. Jim Welch officiating. Miss Causgrove was born April 7, 1992, and died April 7, 1992, at Matagorda General Hospital. She is survived by her parents, Thomas William and Julie Dawn Causgrove of Bay City; sister, Megan Nicole Causgrove of Bay City; paternal grandmother, Mary Causgrove of Nebraska City, Neb.; and maternal grandparents, Ben and Nancy Murphy of Eagle, Neb. Mariah Denise Chadwell Mariah Denise Chadwell, 18 months old, died Sunday, May 7, 1995, in Bay City, to John P. and Olga Jean Quintania Chadwell. She is survived by her parents, John P. and Olga Jean Chadwell; her sisters, Karen Lynn Lewis, Kelli Deann Chadwell, and Joni Lannetle Lewis; and brother, Corey Lee Chadwell, all of Bay City. She is also survived by her Maternal Grandparents, Florentino Quintania and Rosie Juarez, of Bay City; paternal Grandparents, Gordon Chadwell of El Dorado Estates, and Linda Palmer of Bay City; and by her aunts and uncles, Janie Garcia, Danny Quintania, Jessie Quintania, all of Bay City, Becky Marianni of New York, Stanley Chadwell of El Dorado Estates, and Sam Chadwell of Clear Lake; and by numerous cousins. Rice Field Accident Funeral services for M. B. Conroy, 53, Bay City, rice harvest contractor who was killed in a Sunday afternoon rice field accident, will be held at 10 a. m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Bay City with Dr. Allen O. Webb, pastor, and Rev. M. A. Marshall, former pastor officiating. Mr. Conroy was killed instantly about 3 p. m. Sunday when his chest was crushed between a cable and the equalizing bars of a combine. He and Edward Cook were trying to right a combine that had reared upwards after being driven onto a levee. Prior to the accident he had to jump free of the combine. Witnessing the accident was Mr. Conroy’s 15-year-old son James, Mr. Cook and two young workers. Justice of the Peace, John Ward, rendered a verdict of accidental death. Work was being done on the Kemp tract about seven miles south of Bay City. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Conroy is survived by his widow; two sons, Martin “Sonny” Conroy, stationed at Langley AFB, Virginia, James; one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Gray of Houston; five sisters, Mrs. Ester Jones of Houston, Mrs. Mary Phillips of Iowa, Mrs. Blanche Thompson of Nebraska, Mrs. Carl Waters of Kansas, Mrs. Gertrude Roth of Texas; two brothers, Harvey Conroy of Texas, William Conroy of Kansas.

Jesse K. Creech Anna V. Creech  Funeral Services Are Held Here For J. K. Creech, 73 Funeral services were held Wednesday for Jesse K. Creech, 73, of Van Vleck at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Louis Saunders officiating. Mr. Creech died Monday in the Matagorda County General Hospital of injuries received in an automobile accident near Van Vleck. Interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Miss Violet Creech and Mrs. Vivian McNair; one son, Jesse Robert Creech; one brother, Sid Creech of San Antonio. Daily Tribune, June 9, 1955 Anna V.
