Matagorda County recorded its third traffic fatality of 1968 Saturday when Arthur Roy Young, 29, was killed in a one-car accident 11 miles south of Bay City on State Highway 60.

Department of Public Safety Patrolman Cecil Taylor investigated the accident and said Young was apparently alone and lost control of his car on a curve, running into a rice field at a high rate of speed. The car was a total loss, Taylor said.

Justice of the Peace D. B. Hinton said Young’s death was accidental. Young was an employee of AMF Tuboscope and had been a resident of Bay City for five years.

Jos. Zernicek Found Dead Beside Tractor Wednes.

Josef Jernicek, about 66, died sometime yesterday afternoon, judged about 12:00 o’clock, and was found about 4:30 o’clock by a Negro man near the Sears and Roebuck Farm just off the Skelly Road north of Bay City.

The body was found near a large tractor, which had evidently stalled in a ditch. The body was evidently dragged considerable distance before the tractor stalled. Justice of the Peace W. T. Cox had not returned a verdict as of 1:00 o’clock this afternoon, but said that an autopsy may be performed later.

Mr. Jernicek was enroute home with groceries and the tractor, which he was driving, and body was found in a ditch off the Skelly Road north of Bay City, Mr. Cox said. A foot was tangled in a lever of the tractor, Sheriff Jack Cole reported late yesterday afternoon, and added that he believed the body was dragged considerable distance before the tractor stalled. Mr. Jernicek was expected home by relatives about noon yesterday.

Funeral services will be held at the Holy Cross Catholic Church Saturday morning at 9:00 o’clock, with Father C. J. Martin officiating. Rosary will be held at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home tomorrow night at 8:00 o’clock. Arrangements are being made by Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Survivors include six daughters and five sons. Surviving daughters are Miss Mary and Martha Jernicek of Bay City, Mrs. Tony Henrich of Bay City, Mrs. Frances Hudgins of Lane City, Mrs. Josephine Green of Brownfield, and Mrs. Louise Seward of Temple, Oklahoma. Sons surviving are Josef, Franz, Emil, and Alvis Jernicek of Bay City and Ludwig Jernicek of Wadsworth.

Funeral Services Here Saturday For Josef Zernicek

Rosary for Josef Jernicek, 66, who was found dead Wednesday will be held tonight at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home at 8:00 o’clock with funeral services to be held at the Holy Cross Catholic Church tomorrow morning, with Father C. J. Martin officiating.

Justice of the Peace W. T. Cox rendered a verdict of death by heart attack following the finding of Mr. Jernicek’s body near the Sears and Roebuck farm. Mr. Jernicek’s body was found near a tractor which he was riding and which evidently dragged him considerable distance before stalling in a ditch where the body and tractor were found.

A foot was tangled in a lever of the large tractor, where it evidently caught following the fall of his body. The tractor kept moving and finally stalled near the Skelly Road near the Sears and Roebuck farm. Mr. Jernicek was enroute home with groceries at the time of the attack.
