Arnold Fred Alberts

Arnold Fred Alberts, 82, of Alvin, Texas passed away on November 7, 2011 in Friendswood, Texas. He was born on April 8, 1929 in Madison, Iowa to Folkert Alberts and Talena (Johnson) Alberts. He married Wanda Estelle Abshier on August 14, 1954, in New Gulf, Texas. They resided in Alvin for 43 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Alvin. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, and Reese Air Force in Lubbock, Texas. He retired from Monsanto on January 1, 1990 after 28 years of service.

In July 2005, Arnold entered what is now Emeritus Senior Living Center in Friendswood, Texas, where he became a resident along with his wife for many years. He died on the evening of November 7, 2011 at Emeritus. He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years; son, Gary Alberts and his wife Mary K., and their children, Jennifer and James of Friendswood, Texas; and son Kenneth Alberts and his wife Lindy of Chicago, Illinois, and his sons, Ian, Sean, Ryan; his brother, Marvol and his wife Sara of Janesville, Iowa, and their children, David, Michael, Mark and Debora.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday November 11, 2011 at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas 77546.

The memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church of Alvin, 611 W. South Street in Alvin, Texas 77511 (http://alvinmethodist.org/) with Scot Bryant officiating.

Wanda Estelle Abshier Alberts

Wanda Estelle Alberts, 80, of Alvin, Texas passed away on May 17, 2012, in Friendswood, Texas. She was born on March 28, 1932 in Bay City, Texas to James R. Abshier and Lois E. (Lee) Abshier. She married Arnold Fred Alberts on August 14, 1954, in New Gulf, Texas. They resided in Alvin for 43 years. She graduated summa cum laude from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, with a Bachelor's of Arts degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in May 1953. She served as medical technology intern from July 1953 to July 1954 at Baylor University Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She was a homemaker until 1971, when she started working for Galveston County Memorial Hospital (now Mainland Center) in Texas City, Texas. She worked at the hospital for 21 years first as a Lab Technician and later promoted to Lab Technologist. As a homemaker she was involved in her sons' activities, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, refurbishing furniture and lamps, and crafts such as crocheting, shadow boxing, and ornament making. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Alvin, the United Methodist Women's Group, Friendship Class, and served as a Sunday school teacher and aide. She was a long-time member of the Alvin Garden Club.

In July 2005, Wanda entered what is now Emeritus Senior Living Center in Friendswood, Texas, where she became a resident along with her husband for many years. She died peacefully on May 17, 2012, at Emeritus. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brother, James Robert ("George") Abshier.

She is survived by her son, Gary Alberts and his wife Mary K., and their children, Jennifer and James of Friendswood, Texas; and son, Kenneth Alberts, and his wife Lindy of Chicago, Illinois, and his sons, Ian, Sean, Ryan, Ian's wife, Angie, and granddaughter, Bailey Nicole; her brother George's children, Mike, Steve Diane and their spouses; her brother, Jon "Bunt" and his wife Vivian "Tut" of Wadsworth, Texas, and their children, Kim, David, Chuck, Beth and Mitchell, and their spouses; her sister, Karen "Toodles" and her husband Julian Williams of Conroe, Texas, and their children, Brad and Rod and their wives.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas 77546.

The memorial service will be conducted at 10:00. A.M. on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church of Alvin, 611 W. South Street in Alvin, Texas 77511 (http://alvinmethodist.org/) with Scot Bryant officiating.

Barry Barbour
(April 3, 1935 - December 17, 2011)

Barry Joel Lane Barbour was born in Houston, TX on April 3, 1935, the son of Dr. J. Lane and Susan Poole Barbour of Bay City. He was called home to be with the Lord on December 17th, 2011. Barry is a descendant of the Keller Family, who came with Stephen F. Austin’s first 300 settlers to settle Texas in 1824. His grandfather Mr. T.J. Poole, Sr. was a prominent banker, cattleman and community leader of Matagorda and Brazoria counties.

Barry married Judy Rhea in Wharton, TX on January 31st, 1958 and they have celebrated almost 54 wonderful years of marriage. They have two sons, Donald Lane (and wife Kelly) of Sisterdale, Barry Gorden of Van Vleck, granddaughter Susan Poole Barbour and great granddaughter Haylee Shea Creager of Victoria. His sister Dona Barbour Worrell of San Antonio also survives. In addition to his immediate family members, he is also survived by the brothers and sister of his granddaughter. Drew “Buck” Brady and family of Lake Jackson, Robyn Riedel-Woodson and family of Bay City, and R.J. Riedel of Bay City, all of which he was very proud and fond of. Family was of the utmost importance to Barry.

Barry spent much of the time in his younger years hunting and fishing on the Poole Ranch with his beloved Uncle Donald and Aunt Muggie Poole. He was a successful cattleman, rice, soybean, and milo farmer in Matagorda county for 27 years. Barry was also a professional chef/restaurateur and owner with Judy of four restaurants in his hometown of Bay City. He also co-authored several highly acclaimed cookbooks with Judy. Barry spent many exciting times big game hunting in the American West and also owned and operated a successful hunting/outfitting business in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Fleming and Barbour Big Game Outfitters. He was a commercial, multiengine, instrument rated pilot and piloted he and Judy’s twin Cessna 310, as well as flew charter for Imeson Aviation of Jackson Hole. He was the executive chef of the White Buffalo Club of Jackson Hole for many years as well. He enjoyed big game fishing on the Texas gulf coast, Hawaii, and Mexico with his family.

Barry is a graduate of Bay City High School and was further educated at Wharton County Junior College and Austin College in Sherman Texas. He also proudly served in the United States Army, was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church of Bay City, having served as a deacon. He was an active supporter in the community especially of the Matagorda County Livestock Show and Sale and with William Townsend, Mr. Townsend, and Irving Savage founded the Holding Pen to promote and encourage buyers of livestock sale. He was captain of the Airborne Division of the Matagorda County Sheriffs Department and flew the Texas Rangers, prisoners and search and rescue for drowning among others.

Barry and Judy have made their home in Bandera, Texas for the for the last 10 years. Barry most recently was the executive chef at Clear Srings Exotic Game Ranch in Bandera. He and Judy have followed their dreams most of their married life, traveling extensively throughout the American West the last years of his life. Life has been exciting and adventurous, full of happiness as well as disappointments, but as a family they have weathered the storms. Times have been good and times have been tough, but through it all faith in God, family and friends has prevailed.

After a sudden brief illness, Barry is at peace with the Lord.

Ann Elizabeth Parker Turnipseede, 60, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at a local hospital. She was born April 8, 1953 to the late Robert H. Parker Sr. & Geraldine Elizabeth Crow Parker.

She is survived by her husband: David Turnipseede of Waco; 2 sons: Scott Barnett and wife Shari of Sweeny, and Clay Barnett of Whitney; daughter: Sally Barnett of Waco; 7 grandchildren: Megan, Dylan, Haley, Landon, Hunter, Erin, and Christopher; sister: Susan Hunt and husband Jim of Dallas; nephew: Alan Hunt and wife Monica of Dallas; niece: Nicole White and husband King of Dallas; 4 great-nieces: Parker, Drew, Isabella, and Daniela; great-nephew: Alan; aunt: Johnna Norris of Bay City; half-sister: Lillian Underwood of Frisco; half-brother: Bob Parker of Cypress; and several other beloved family members. Mrs. Boulton was born Feb. 13, 1906 in Fayetteville, Ark., to Sallie B. and Joe Matthews Branson and died Oct 3, 1992 at Matagorda General Hospital.

She was a member of the Disciples of Christ Church and a former resident of Sargent.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Duewie and Lou Boulton of Sargent; a daughter-in-law, Pat Boulton of Hemphill; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She had retired two years ago as executive vice president of Bay City Federal Savings and Loan after 41 years of service. Prominent Banker Dies in Houston

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon for Lorraine P. Broughton who died April 9 at the Diagnostic Hospital in Houston.

Mrs. Broughton had retired from her position as executive vice president of Bay City Federal Savings and Loan in March of 1977. She had been with the local bank for 41 years.

She joined the savings and Loan in January 1936 as a general office worker and was the only one working in the office until 1945. In 1956 she was appointed secretary-treasurer of the association, a post she held until May of 1968 when she was appointed to her new position. She served for a two year term as director of the Gulf Coast Savings and Loan League.

Mrs. Broughton was honored with a reception at the bank upon her retirement.

Services will be held at 3:30 p. m. April 10 at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Interment will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery.

Rena Elizabeth Bailey Broughton, 97, of Bay City, passed away Monday, September 19, 2005, at her residence.

She was born on October 3, 1907, in Matagorda, Texas, to parents Weston and Annie Nolte Bailey.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Bay City and volunteered for many local service organizations in Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William Herwin Broughton, and a son, Weldon Eugene Broughton.

She is survived by: grandchildren, Weldon and Lisa Broughton, and Laura and Lee Ball; a daughter-in-law and close friend, Nan Broughton; and great-grandchildren, Tyler Ball, Heather Broughton, Hayley Ball, Larielle Badon and Hunter Ball; her caretaker, Willie Bonner; as well as her other caretakers.

A private burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City and a memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, September 30, 2005, at the First Baptist Church of Bay City, with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Broughton, Frank Sliva, Paul Sliva, Andy Anderson, Courtney Grover, Bruce Glover and Bill Heiligbrodt.

Services are under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home.

Lettie Frances Brown was born August 2, 1930, in Waco, Texas to the late Thomas and Myrtle Dickerson Sullins. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a resident of Bay City since 1961, and a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include: her husband, Jack Edward Brown of Bay City; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and James Root of Ridgeland, Mississippi; grandson, Micha C. Hill of Oakland, California; and brother, Howard Sullins of Waco.

Charles Budaus 48, of Bay City died Friday, September 15, 2000. He was born October 19, 1951 in El Campo to Ann Budaus and the late Charles F. Badaus.

He was a truck driver, carpenter, and a Catholic. He also served in the United States Marine Corps.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Budaus; mother, Ann Budaus, daughter, Shannon Jackson of Burnett; sons, Charles Budaus Jr., Don Budaus and Jason Budasu all of Bay City, stepdaughters, Kay Armstrong of Bay City and Janet Roberts of Arizona; stepson, Earl Armstrong of Bay City; sister, Carolyn Maladrakis of Victoria; brothers, Michael Budaus of Uvalde and Steve Budaus of Victoria; and ten grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and a granddaughter, Lisa.

Visitation was from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Green's Mortuary Chapel. A Rosary was recited at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Services were held at 2:30 by the Rev. Casimir Jarzombek (father Casey) officiating. Burial with military honors was at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers were Matt Ochoa, Michael Budaus Jr., Chris Budaus, Shawn Malandrakis, Larry Dornak and Darrell Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Budaus Sr., Steve Budaus, Mike Malandrakis, James Weakley and David Coker.

Edwin “Gin” Cihal

Funeral services for Edwin “Gin” Cihal, 65, of Bay City were scheduled for 4 p. m. today at First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr. W. D. Baker officiating. Burial is scheduled for Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Cihal was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Collegeport and died Sept. 21, 1987, in Lake Tahoe.

He was the owner of TLC Rental Tool, Inc. and a lifetime member of the 100 Club. He was a veteran of World War II where he served with the U. S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Fults Cihal of Bay City; a daughter, Pat Anderson of Austin; a stepdaughter, Debra Stade; four stepsons, Michael, Stephen, Ronald and Donald Massey; two grandchildren, Tammy Irwin of Wharton and Denise Anderson of Manor, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Clayton Irwin Jr. and Jessica Irwin; and nine step-grandchildren. He is also survived by Ollie Massey.

Mrs. Cole was born Nov. 28, 1953, to Allen and Adela Bryant in Bay City, and died April 20, 1990, in Bay City.

A lifelong resident of Bay City, she was a member of the Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Allan Cole of Bay City; parents, Allen and Adela Bryant of Kingsville; two daughters, Kimberly Gayle Cole and Kelli Lynn Cole of Bay City; a son, Keith Allan Cole of Bay City; three sisters, Peggy Griffith of Kingsville, Gayle Polak of Eagle River, Alaska, and Penni McCurry of Bay City.

Pallbearers include Roy Cole, Raymond Cole, Dan Ehlert, Randy McCurry, Fritz Arlitt and John Arlitt.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Gordon Lee Cook

Gordon Lee Cook, 44, of Bay City passed away July 2, 1995 at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was born November 12, 1950 in Bay City to Mark and Oleta Campbell Cook. He was a life long resident of Matagorda County and a member of The First United Methodist Church. He was the director of the Bay City Gas Company; served on the Education Committee and the Board of Directors of the Texas Gas Association; past chairman of the Matagorda County Fairgrounds Committee; was the 1994-1995 president of the Bay City Lions Club; served as Chairman and Director of the Rice Festival; was past president of the Bay City Booster Club; was the founder and served as chairman of the Friends of the Blackcats; was a director of the Blackcat Classic Golf Tournament; was a longtime Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball Coach in Bay City; and was a volunteer umpire for Youth Baseball. He was preceded in death by his father, Mark Cook in 1962. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 21 years, Sheri Humphries Cook of Bay City; his mother, Oleta Cook of Bay City; one daughter, Jessica Cook of Bay City; one sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Charles Louis Williams of Bay City; by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Clifton and Marilyn Cook of Houston and Ronnie Cook of McKinney, Texas; his mother-in-law, Wannie Humphries of Bay City; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lesa and David Tidwell of Belton, Texas, Jim and Elsa Humphries of Bay City, and Judy and Tommy Rowland of El Campo; by eleven nieces and nephews. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a. m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Bay City with the Rev. Mike Toland and the Rev. Jim Welch officiating. Burial will follow at the Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Pallbearers include, Mark Finlay, Johnnie Hahn, Crayden Dennard, Brent Marceaux, Warren Trahan, Joey Sliva, Skipper Osborne, and George Deshotels. Members of the Bay City Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. Contributions may be made to the Bay City Lions Club Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. William Edward Cook
(December 9, 1915 - February 5, 2010)

William Edward Cook was born in Emmit Arkansas Dec. 9, 1915 to the late William Joseph & Teresa Isabelle Sulzer Cook. He married the late Dorothy Ellis Cook in 1939 and moved to Bay City in 1948. He was a World War II Veteran and was retired as a First Class Machisist with Phillips Petroleum where he worked for over 30 years.

He is survived by his daughters Gwen Templeton and Charlene Harvey; grandchildren Claudette Chanik, Eddie Chanik and Lyndell Joe Chanik; great grandchildren Laurie Bass and Larry Hunt; great-great grandchildren Crystal Bell Bass and Stormy Dawn Bass; brother Imon Cook and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Macomber officiating. Graveside services with Military Honors will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ron Harvey, Leo Borak, Dravin Barchet, Joe Chanik, Bill Jones and John Mohon.

Dorothy D. Cook

Dorothy D. Cook, 81, of Bay City died March 16, 2003 at Bay Villa Nursing Home. She was born March 25, 1921 in Hope, Ark. to the late William Luther and Mary Alice King Ellis. She was resident of Bay City since 1948 and a member of the Nichols Rd. Church of Christ.

Survivors include: husband, William Edward Cook of Bay City; daughters and a son-in-law, Gwen Templeton of Bay City and Charlene and Ronald Harvey of Sugar Land, Texas; three grandchildren, Claudette Brown of Jacksonhole, Wyo., Edward Chanik of Odessa, and Joe Chanik of Port Lavaca; and two great grandchildren, Laurie Bass of Odessa and Larry Hunt of Houston.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Jeanette Sliva and Elizabeth Pesek; and brother: William Ellis.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Taylor Bros. Funeral home with Brother Joe Wrape officiating.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harold Brooks, Bill Jones, Johnny Mohon, Wayne Mohon, Leo Borak and Ron Harvey.

Jessie Jewel Curtner, 66, former resident of Bay City, of West Columbia, died at her home Monday morning. Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. in the First Baptist Church in West Columbia, under the direction of Baker Funeral Home of West Columbia, with Rev. Harold Parnell officiating. Burial will be in the Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City. Survivors include her husband William Claude, of the home, one daughter, Mrs. John C. Mohon of Sweeny, one son, Roger Daniel Curtner also fo the home; four sisters, Mrs. Marie Cooper, Utopia, Iris Rainey, Van Vleck, Mrs. Catherine Jones, Garden Grove, Calif., Mrs. Ruth Wood, Azle; one brother, Wallis Rice, Humble. Mrs. Curtner was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Rice of Bay City.

William E. “Bill” Ehlert Jr.

Funeral services for William E. “Bill” Ehlert, Jr., 66, of Bay City, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating and assisted by Dr. W. D. Baker. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Ehlert was born Feb. 3, 1927 in Bay City to William E. and Naomi J. Meschkat Ehlert Sr. and died Oct. 17, 1993 in Matagorda General Hospital.

A member of the First Baptist Church, he served there as a teacher for the Men’s Sunday School Class in the Adult II Department, chairman of the Deacons for 1992 and 1993 and he was chairman of the Missions Committee for the Colorado Association.

He was employed by Phillips Petroleum Co. in Sweeny for 32 years and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Davis Ehlert of Bay City; his mother, Naomi J. Ehlert of Bay City; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Karen Ehlert of Katy; two daughters, Kathy Ehlert of Spring and Susie Huebner of Bay City; a daughter and son-in-law Judy and Richard Tinsley of Cypress; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Kenneth Hite of Bay City and 11 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Sowell, Woody Riedel, Bob Allen, Frank Craft, George McDonald and Andy Anderson.

Honorary pallbearers are Deacon of the First Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School Class Adult II.

Funeral services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Jean Kathryn Davis Ehlert, 71, of Bay City died August 30, 2000 at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, Washington. She was born March 2, 1929 in Groveton, Texas to the late Guy and Vera Tempia Elizabeth Skidmore Davis. Mrs. Ehlert was a member of the First Baptist Church and a life-long resident of Bay City.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 2, 2000, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Clarence Wilburn Emerson, 81 of Angleton, Texas passed Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at Angleton-Danbury Medical Center.

He was born July 5, 1925 in Anson, Texas to William C. Emerson and Mary Smith Emerson. Formerly of Bay City, he was a retired operator and shift supervisor from Celanese Chemical and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by: his daughter, Judy Myers and husband Gary of Bay City; his son, J. W. "Bill" Emerson of Friendswood; brother, Raymond "Jack" Emerson of Fort Worth; and grandchildren, Rhiannon and Brandy Emerson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William C. and Mary Emerson.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City with the Rev. Eric Klimpel officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
