Final Rites Held For Mrs. Crist, 95, In Van Vleck Church

Final rites for Mrs. Alberta “Bertie” Crist, 95, were held Thursday in the Van Vleck First Baptist Church, the Revs. L. W. Crouch and L. L. Garner officiating.

Mrs. Crist died December 7 at her residence in Van Vleck.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary Gibson of Van Vleck; one son, A. J. Crist of Van Vleck; two sisters, and one brother.

Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Vera Mae Crow

Funeral services for Vera Mae Crow, 82, of Bay City were scheduled for 2 p. m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. W. E. Dugger Jr. officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mrs. Crow was born March 8, 1905, in Rockwell, Texas, and died June 2, 1987, at her residence.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Johnna and Harry Norris of Bay City and Geraldine and Mel Ramsey of Valley Mills; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Harry E. Norris Jr., John Wilson, Oscar Rooth, Scott Barnett, Doug Thornton and Jim Hunt.

Services were under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

July 7, 1908 – November 30, 1983

Funeral services for Harry Rowles Dawdy, 75, of Matagorda, are scheduled for 2:00 PM Friday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Leroy Stanton officiating. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Dawdy was born July 7, 1908, in Matagorda County, and died November 30, 1983, at Matagorda General Hospital. He was a rancher and rice farmer, and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: wife, Lorena Johnson Dawdy; cousin, Richard P. Dawdy and wife Emma, of Bay City; sister-in-law Marguerite Dawdy, of Markham; 11 nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Stewart Johnson, Paul Roe, Pat Jurek, Loy Sneary, Rodney Workman and Worth Lucas. Honorary pallbearers are Billy Brown, Hugh Strickland, Clyde Workman, H. A. Macklin, Norman May, B. B. Rhodes, Leroy Lenert, Earl Broughton and Inocencio Cantu.

Lorena Johnson Dawdy

Funeral services for Lorena Johnson Dawdy, 85, of Bay City, will be at 4 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church, Rev. Mike Toland officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Dawdy died August 14 at the Legacy in Bay City. She was born Sept. 16, 1912 in Markham to the late Albert H. and Jessie Longuet Johnson. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City and a lifelong resident of Matagorda County.

Dawdy is survived by two sisters, Helga J. Harper of Bay City, and Vergie J. Loveless of Little Rock, Ark.; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry R. Dawdy, Nov. 30, 1983 and by two brothers, Chester Johnson and Hoyt Johnson.

Pallbearers will be Loy Sneary, Adam Sneary, Craig Williams, Worth Lucas, Jr., Haskell Simons, and Mary Dodd.

Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Strickland, Harry Shannon, and Frank Baker.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Rites Held Today J. D. Deshotels

Funeral rites were held this afternoon at 4 o’clock for Mr. Jesse Deshotels, of Newgulf who died suddenly at his home at 5:35 a. m., Thursday. He was 62 years, 2 months and 29 days of age.

He is survived by his wife, his father, Jess Deshotels of Lake Charles, La., and two daughters, Mrs. F. Green of Bay City and Miss Lois Deshotels of Houston. Also surviving are one son, J. D. Jr., of Baytown; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Blackman of Lake Charles, Sister Mary Evangeline of Beaumont, Mrs. E. Elender of Lake Austin, La.

Services were held this afternoon at 4 o’clock with Rev. Aubrey Maxted officiating. Interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church and Matagorda Lodge Number 7 A. F. & A. M. For thirty years he had been an employee of the Texas Gulf Sulphur Company and at the time of his death he was chief of the operating engineers.

Mr. L. E. Dickey Dies In Houston

Mr. L. E. Dickey, age 52 years, passed away at a hospital in Houston, Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock and will be buried in Bay City this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Mr. Dickey is survived by his wife, Mrs. L. E. Dickey, his mother, Mrs. Maggie Dickey of Dallas, six sons, Melvin E., Bay City, Hugh, United States Navy, Bishop, United States Army, Vernon, United States Navy, Nolan, United States Navy and Forrest of Pledger, Texas. Five sisters, Mrs. Jessie Moore of Houston, Mrs. Ida Bradshaw, Austin, Mrs. Bernie Hauser, Houston, Mrs. Ottie Woods, Houston and Mrs. Odell McClain, Dallas and two brothers, Charles Dickey of the United States Army and Robert of Bay City.

Dickey, Mrs. Archie Estell , age 75 and a resident of Bay City, passed away October 14 in the Bay Villa Nursing Home. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints. Funeral services will be Friday, October 16, 2:00 p. m., at Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel. Elder Walter Specht of the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints will conduct the services and interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mrs. Dickey is survived by four sons; Melvin, Vernon, and Nolan, of Houston, and Forrest of Bay City. Also, three sisters: Mrs. Willie Thames, Bay City; Mrs. Melis Thames, Houston, and Mrs. Dora May Bohnnam, of Giddings, Texas; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be E. J. and Wade Ashcraft, Wayne Cartner, Henry Insall, John Underwood, and George Wainner. Arrangements were made through Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Taft—David Oscar Dodd Jr., a retired employee of W. T. Worsham Crop Dusting Co., and a Mason, died Feb. 23, 1998. He was 98. Survivors include three daughters, Louise Johnson, Katherine Ressler and Lillie Garrett; a son, David Dodd III; a brother, Albert Dodd of Sugar Valley; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a. m. Feb. 26 at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery, Bay City. Charlie Marshall Funeral Home and Crematory, Aransas Pass.

Funeral services for Sally Louise Linn Dodd, 89, of Aransas Pass, formerly of Bay City, will be held at 10 a. m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Aransas Pass with Bob Watson officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mrs. Dodd was born April 23, 1896, in Wharton and died Dec. 17, 1985, in a hospital in Louisville, Texas.

Survivors include her husband, D. O. Dodd of Taft, Texas; a sister, Elizabeth Mapes of Alvin; three daughters, Lillie B. Garrett of Bailey’s Pass, Texas, Louise Linn Johnson of Aransas Pass, and Katherine Jean Ressler of Van Horn, Texas; a son, David O. Dodd II of Roanoke, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are with Marshall Funeral Home, Aransas Pass.

Saturday morning at Taylor Brothers Chapel with the Reverend Jack Shoultz of the Alvin Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery. Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Irene Duffy; 3 daughters, Mrs. R. H. Brewer of Missouri City, Mrs. George A. Pugh of Alvin, Mrs. C. H. Kuntz of Montgomery, Alabama; 1 sister, Mrs. O. A. Duke of Houston; 4 grandchildren. Pallbearers are: Harry Dawdy, Carey Smith, Glen White, Leonard Galow, D. J. Huebner, and Robert O’Bannon. Mr. Duffy had lived in Bay City 36 years. His family request memorials be sent to the Cancer Society. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Late Rites Held Tuesday Afternoon For Matt Elliott

Funeral services for Matt Elliott, 75-year-old Bay Citian, who died Tuesday at his family residence, were held at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home at 3:00 o’clock yesterday afternoon with burial in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Elliott is survived by two children, one son, H. Elliott of West Columbia and one daughter, Mrs. Leslie Lee Henry of Bay City.

Rev. W. L. Hughes officiated at services and pall bearers were Norman Mack, Bill, Bryant, Pat, Hubbard, and Rush Hubbard.

Anastacio Garay

Funeral services for A. Garay, 85, of Bay City, are scheduled for 10 a. m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Edward Boren officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p. m. Thursday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel in Bay City.

Mr. Garay was born Apil 11, 1908 in Matehuala, San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Jose and Ramona Jimenez Garay and died Dec. 7, 1993 at his residence.

A resident of Bay City since 1927, he was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the owner and operator of A. Garay Iron and Metal in Bay City for 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Garay of Bay City; seven daughters, Benita Rodgers of San Antonio, Nina Santos of Houston and Rosalinda Zboral, Virginia Garza, Erminia Garay, Adela Garay and Elida Acosta of Bay City; 11 sons, Anastacio Garay Jr. of California, Lee Garay of Houston, Paul Garay of Brenham, Felix Garay of Texas City, Pete, Julio, Alfred, Benino, Abel and Steven Garay, all of Bay City, Adolpho Garay of Rosenberg; 78 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Janie Ruiz and Mary Garay and a son, Joe Garay.

Pallbearers are Abel Garay, Esteven Garay, Adolfo Garay, Benio Garay, Rene Garza and Ronnie Acosta.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home of Bay City.
