Bay City Youth, Former Resident Drowned in River
Bodies Not Found At 5 p. m.; Luedcke Died as Result of Rescue Attempt

August Luedcke, 28, former Houston Post representative here at Bay City was drowned at 2:30 today at Coletto Creek, ten miles from Victoria, when he unsuccessfully attempted to save the life of Rex Ball, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Ball of this city also. Young Ball had gone to Victoria to visit his friends, Mr. and Mrs. August Luedcke who are now living there and they were attending a newsboy’s picnic on Coletto Creek.

Rex Ball got into water over his head and was unable to get to shore when Luedcke jumped in to save him. He was unable to get the boy and was also drowned in the attempt. Another boy, Bobbie Stolz, was saved by his brother, Milo Stolz, Jack Workman and Wilburn Lindsey.

According to Chester Evans of the Victoria Advocate who telephoned the news to the Tribune, the bodies had not been found at 5 o’clock this afternoon.

Final Rites For Rex Ball Will Be Here Tomorrow

Funeral services for Rex Ball, 11-year-old Bay City youth who was drowned in the Coletto Creek yesterday, will be held at the Christian church here tomorrow morning at 11 a. m.

Survivors include the boy’s father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Ball.

Final rites for August Luedecke, former Bay City resident, who lost his life in a vain attempt to rescue the Ball youth, will be held in Goliad, at the home of his parents, at 5 p. m. tomorrow.

Services for Rex Ball will be in charge of Walker-Matchett.

Blake Newman Bunk

Funeral services for Blake Newman Bunk, 21, of Richmond will be held 10 a. m. Friday at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Richmond. The Revs. Jim Welch and Stephen Kinney will officiate. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Friends may call after 3 p. m. today at the Garmany and Carden Funeral Directors Chapel in Richmond.

Mr. Bunk died Nov. 18, 1992, at M. D. Anderson Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

He was a graduate of Episcopal High School and was attending Wharton County Junior College when he became ill. He was well known in offshore fishing and was awarded the Sportsman of the Year Trophy last year at the Texas International Fishing Tournament.

Survivors include his parents, Dr. and Mrs. John Bunk; two brothers, Charles and Craig Bunk; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bunk; two grandmothers, Mrs. Charles Newman and Mrs. Frank Bunk and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials in his honor to be sent to Episcopal High School, 4621 Fournace, Bellaire, 77401.

Services are under the direction of Garmany and Carden Funeral Directors, Inc.

Elisha Green Cloar

E. G. Cloar

Mr. E. G. Cloar, a long time resident and a highly esteemed citizen of Bay City, died at his home Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock after a long illness and was buried Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock in Cedarvale Cemetery, at the age of 52 years. He leaves a wife and seven children.

Decedent was born in Tennessee and moved to Texas when a young man, living in Hunt County and later on at Cleburne, moving to Bay City from Cleburne in 1908, where he had been engaged in farming until illness made it impossible for him to attend to his affairs.

Surviving him is his wife and children, Miss Ura, Roy, now living at Greenville, Miss Lera, Bessie, Leslie, Beulah and Tommie.

Mr. Cloar was well known to all of our people and had many friends. He was a man of honest purposes, strong conviction and pronounced views. He took a keen interest in politics of his country and was well posted on the side he championed.

The members of the family are the recipients of the sincerest of sympathy from their numerous friends.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 3 o’clock for Mr. Timothy J. Danahy who died Sunday, Reverend Ernest Deutsch of the Presbyterian Church officiated. Funeral Arrangements were under the direction of Taylor Bros.

Funeral Services For Louis Ernest Ducros To Be Friday

The funeral services for Louis Ernest Ducros, two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Ducros, will be held at 10:00 a. m. Friday morning from Matchett-Newman Funeral Home.

The child died as a result of burns received in an automobile crash early Wednesday morning.

Fannie Mabel Knowles

Funeral Services Planned Tuesday for Mrs. Mable Knowles

Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Mable Sherman Knowles, 76, who died at the home of her son, W. Haskell Knowles here in Bay City, Sunday evening at 6:45, will be held from the Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30.

Mrs. Knowles, a resident of Matagorda County since 1911, was one time postmistress at Buckeye where she lived until she moved to Bay City in 1943. She was a member of the Mayflower Colony No. 1 Pilgrim Fathers and a member of the Parker St. Methodist Episcopal Church of Lawrence, Massachusetts.

She is survived by: one son, W. Haskell Knowles of Bay City.

Active pallbearers are Louis Matchett, Louis Wolf, Harry Dawdy, Fred Brown, Luther Robertson, and E. L. McDonald. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Walker, J. F. Ward, H. P. Barker, W. F. Denbow, Sidney A. Anderson, E. J. Nedbalek, W. B. Luder of Markham, L. C. Lewis, L. B. Luder, W. B. Luder, Jr., Elwood Smith, Ed Wendt, Edgar Lowery, Richard Gusman, Frank Baker, Sr., and Billy Thompson.

Rev. R. E. Black, pastor of the Ashby Baptist Church, assisted by Dr. A. O. Webb, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Bay City, will officiate. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.
