7 Year-Old Bay City Girl Electrocuted

Esmeralda Villarreal

January 5, 1961 – May 17, 1969

A 7-year-old girl was electrocuted Saturday afternoon when she apparently knocked over a small wood post holding up a metal wire that was connected to a power box on one end and a clothesline on the other end.

Chief of Police Barney Mason identified the girl as Esmeralda Villarreal, who lived with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Domingo Sanchez at 2008 Avenue E. The girl’s mother lives in Rosenberg, Mason said.

Police arrived at the scene of the accident, 1805 11th St., at 4:22 PM Saturday and found the girl on the ground with the wire line close to her body. A doctor at Matagorda General Hospital told police the girl was dead on arrival at 4:35 PM. Prior to the arrival of the police, Nick Moreno, a neighbor, lifted the victim off the wire with a wood board. An unidentified neighbor gave the young girl mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but it was not successful, police said.

A Central Power and Light Co. employee told the police that someone had tied the wire from the switchbox to the wire clothesline. The wire had apparently been in that position for along period of time, Chief Mason stated. Mason said the Villarreal girl apparently knocked over the pole and the wire pulled the switch box causing a short. The girl fell on top of the wire.

There were two witnesses to the tragedy. Arzial Zuniga, 9, of 1805 11th Street and Vidal Moreno, 8, of 1701 Avenue G saw the pole and wire fall and the girl electrocuted. Justice of the Peace Jack Hinton held the inquest.

Funeral services are pending.
