COLLEGEPORT GRAVES MARKED WITH
ROMAN NUMERALS

Photos courtesy of Mary Beth Newland Ross unless otherwise specified.

The earliest existing list of Collegeport burials was compiled by L. E. Liggett in the late 1920s. Of the 24 names on the list, 13 are numbered.
Those 13 names are believed to correspond with stones in the cemetery that have only a Roman numeral as an inscription.
The following list includes all of the 13 names as well as a number 14 which was not on the original list.

MATT PIERCE JR.

Collegeport , Texas , Mar. 6.--The heart of Collegeport is filled with sorrow Saturday night at 11 o'clock little Matt Pierce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Pierce, passed away. He attended school Friday but Saturday morning complained of a cold and it was thought he had a slight attack of influenza. At 5 p.m. he had an attack of acute indigestion and lived only five hours.

Little Matt was loved by every man, woman and child in Collegeport. A bright, handsome lad full of spirit and promise, and his sudden death brings sorrow not only to his parents but to all who knew him.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church, Rev. A. B. Buchannan officiating and he was laid to rest in the local cemetery.

Overhead! look overhead!

'Mong the blossoms white and red,--

Look up, look up! I flutter now

On this fresh pomegranate bough.

See me! 'Tis this silvery bill

Ever cures the good man's ill,

Shed no tear! O, shed no tear!

The flower will bloom another year.

Adieu, adieu--I fly--adieu!

I vanish in the heaven's blue,--

Adieu, adieu!     --Keats. --The Matagorda County Tribune, Thursday, March 9, 1923
