The long Labor Day weekend has ended. To most it was a heartbreaker especially those who had planned outings, fishing, etc. as the rain came down in buckets full. Since it was the last of holidays for millions of school kids—now it’s back to school and the rain is still falling steadily here along the gulf coast.

College students from our community are Roland Jenkins, who will be attending Wharton County Jr. College. For Miss Lynda Wells it will be Sam Houston State College at Huntsville. We wish them the best of luck.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bob Burry have moved to Lake Jackson where both have teaching positions in the Brazosport area. Good luck to them also.

We wish speedy recovery to Mrs. Florence Ellis who is confined to Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City, also to Julian Jenkins who is a patient at Wagner General Hospital in Palacios.

Happy Birthday to Stanley and Stanford Ward who celebrated birthdays Sept. 2nd . They are sons of Mrs. Elizabeth Roesler.

Recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith were W. C. Smith and family of Cleveland, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. D. N. Tate, Mrs. L. O. Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Damon Gerlach all of Fulton, Texas.

Mrs. Zelphia Hill has returned home from a visit with her daughter and family in Virginia.

Mr. and Mrs. Antone Domorod and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Domorod and son of Nailville, Florida all spent a few days in Las Vegas, Nevada last week. Antone says the best way to come from Vegas a winner is don’t drop that first coin in the “one-armed Bandits.” Sounds like a winner to me, too.

Congratulations to newly-weds Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hodges who were wed August 26th at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adonis Harvey. Rev. H. L. Hickman, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene performed the ceremony. The couple left for El Dorado, Ark. where the groom is employed and they will be making their home.

Mrs. E. J. Long and grandson, Louie Gordy, of Houston spent a few days here at her summer place. Didn’t have much luck at fishing—too much fresh water.

Jay Gates and son Bobby, of Houston, caught 29 flounders on Thursday night. Sure were some beauties. They weighed from 2 to 4 pounds each.

Stan and Pat Ward of Houston spent Labor Day with his mother, Mrs. Fred Roesler and Fred.

Well, Beulah came and went, behind her she left death and destruction. Never in history have so many tornadoes been spawned by one hurricane.

In Collegeport they were dropping down on all sides of us. By noon Wednesday most of our community had been evacuated, but there were a few who chose to remain. Those staying here were Mr. and Mrs. Jay Gates, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler, Jack Bullington and Willie Rapstain. They reported seeing six tornadoes hanging from one cloud toward the Tin Top area, suddenly they all seemed to fuse into one large funnel. We presume this is the one that destroyed the John Domorod home.

We are all very thankful that we did not receive any more damage than we did here, and our hearts go out to those victims of the flooded area in the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico, who had been so hard hit by this hurricane and rising flood waters.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of Mr. and Mrs. Chan Dewitt and Mrs. Charlie Wiley.

Visiting the Jack Bullingtons and Mr. and Mrs. Smokey Morris and Kelly on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Potts of Bay City.

Congratulations to the following who celebrated anniversaries recently: Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Smith, their first on Sept. 2; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mondrik, their 7th on Sept. 9th, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bullington, their 22nd on Sept. 10th.

Happy birthday to Mrs. Jimmy Eilbeck who celebrated hers on Sept. 14 and to G. R. Hendrix whose birthday was Sept. 13th.

To those of you who are wanting to fish, the road to Oyster Lake is good but Willie Rapstain has not been able to move his trailer back on the point at Oyster Lake as there was an 8 ft. washout on both ends of Oyster Lake Bridge. Some nice trout and reds were taken from the bridge Sunday and Willie has bait. Stop at Duffy’s Hunting Club if you need bait. They plan repairs on the bridge to start today. The Fred Roeslers spent the weekend in Houston with her son, Stan Ward and family.

So long, see you next week.

Things seem to be back to normal in our community since Hurricane Beulah, and most of the farmers have their second crop of rice harvested.

We are still having high tides and fishing has been good the past few days. Pat Jenkins and Jack Bullington got 45 nice flounder at Oyster Lake Wednesday night, and there have been red fish and trout caught every day since the high water receded. Willie Rapstain is back at Oyster Lake and live bait is available.

Babe Hensen, whose bait camp, boats and motors were completely wiped out by a tornado at Red Bluff on Tres Palacios River, plans to start rebuilding and hopes to be back in operation soon.

There have been reports that some who have been using the public boat launch here have been leaving their vehicle parked on the ramp. Since it is the only ramp in Collegeport and was built by the county for use by the public, be a good sportsman and please move your cars and boat trailers off the ramp. Give your neighbor a chance to launch his boat also.

Funeral service for Mrs. Frank “Ma” Brown were held Sept. 29 in Bay City. Burial was at Hawley Cemetery. Mrs. Brown was one of the Collegeport oldtimers coming here in 1919 from Madison County. Presbyterian Women Of Collegeport Hold Regular Study Meet

The Presbyterian Women of the Church of Collegeport held their Circle meeting Thursday, October 12th, at the home of Mrs. Gustave Franzen. A spacious home in a setting of rolling acres, its affluence attesting to the thrift and endless hard labor of its owners, a family of second generation Americans who are doing much to make this, the richest and most powerful nation in all history.

The Circle met in humble gratitude that Collegeport was spared the devastation and destruction wrought by the recent Hurricane Beulah upon neighboring communities. For Collegeport may well weep with those who have lost much, having known so often first hand the unbelievable horror and havoc of hurricanes.

The Circle members, and their guests, met Thursday as farm women who take pride in being known as “Farm Wives.” Wives of men who daily work in tilling the good earth and bringing forth an abundance of rice and cotton and cattle, to satisfy the needs in hand with God. And we pray that we may learn more and more to see in the lightning’s flash, the rush of wind and the roar of many waters, the handiwork of almighty God.

At 2:30 the meeting was called to order, by the moderator, and after prayer, Mrs. P. V. Corporon, opened the study and discussion of the topics as outlined in the work book, namely “The Holy Spirit”  and “Third person of the Trinity.” And the quotes from the New Testament, “The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost” and “these three are one God,” brought about lively and animated discussion, due in great part to the varied religious backgrounds and diverse religious faiths of those present. We differed much in the little things, but in the great woman’s heart of us all, we were as one. All agreed that the Holy Spirit does abide constantly with those worthy to receive it. The fruit of the Spirit being “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, forbearance.”

From this meeting came a determination to re-dedicate ourselves so that our Christian lives may be a bright and shining answer to youth’s query “Is God Dead?,” and that they may come to realize that the life of a Christian is the greatest adventure of all.

Reports of the district meeting were given by Mesdames Ida Mae Franzen, Dorothy Merck, P. V. Corporon and Dorothy Corporon.

The Circle regards as a signal honor the appointment of Mrs. Janice Corporon one of our youngest members, to the office of President of the Presbyterian Women of District One.

After the business meeting, refreshments were served buffet style and consisted of “hors d’oeuvres,” old fashioned pound cake iced in pink frosting, coffee and cold drinks.

Among those present were Mesdames P. V. Corporon, R. L. Corporon, Russell Corporon, Dean Merck, Gerald Wells, R. L. Wells, Fred Law, George Hejtmanek, Fred King, C. J. Williams, Larry Ellis, John Madison, Gus Franzen, A. A. Penland, and Misses Kim Corporon, Sarah Ellis, Wesley Earl Franzen, Terri Lyn Franzen and the Reporter.

Mrs. Hazel Merck has returned from a very enjoyable two weeks vacation in Birmingham, Alabama, where she visited her aunt and family, the Claude Paynes.

Frank Dreher and son were down this past week from Rockdale to get in some goose hunting. They also visited the Willie Rapstains and Jack Bullingtons. Other visitors of the Bullington were Frank Gayle and Teen Bullington of Markham.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Brown and Debbie Ward of Groves. They also attended the Homecoming game between Groves and Nederland Friday night.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Randy Lawson of Palacios who are the proud parents of a baby daughter born Nov. 5 at Wagner General Hospital. The little Miss weighed three pounds 14 ounces and has been named Katheryn Marie. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. James Tur and Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Quintanilla all of Palacios.

We wish a speedy recovery to Hardy Mizell who is confined to Wagner General Hospital, also to L. C. Smith who is a patient at Matagorda General in Bay City, and to Tommy Potts who is suffering from a virus at home.

Only a few more days before the deer season will open and everyone is getting real anxious. It looks like the weatherman is going to cooperate and give the hunters some nice cool weather. So good luck to all you hunters.

Fire Chief Carl Ackerman reports there was a real good turn out November 28th to the Cake and Pie sale held at the Mopac for the benefit of the Collegeport Area Fire Dept. To all who brought cakes and pies and donated so generously, we wish to say thanks to one and all.

Visitors of the Jimmy Murrys this past weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bob Murry of Lake Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Ben McGlothlin of Wichita, Kansas, Mrs. Alta Bona of Bay City, Jackie and Kelly Morris of Collegeport.

The deer hunters that have returned did not bring back too many deer. Mrs. Ruby Brown of Markham…had got a four pointer, Roland Jenkins and Robert Blackwell, a six pointer and Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins a six and eight pointer.

Duck season opened and not too many ducks and geese have been killed over our way. Guess there will be lots of hunters here for the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and to those of you who are not familiar with this area, be extremely careful of the rattlesnakes. They are really on the move. Willie Rapstain, Jack Bullington and Jay Gates and others have killed around 100 in the past few weeks between Collegeport and Oyster Lake. This reporter killed one that had six rattlers just ten steps from our back door. So when you are hunting also keep one eye out for these creatures.

Weekend guests of the Fred Roeslers were Mr. and Mrs. Louie Barnett of Lafayette, La., Mr. and Mrs. Gene Roesler of Houston.

Sonny Gates of Beaumont is spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Gates. While here he is doing some fishing and goose hunting.

Mr. and Mrs. Bud Bruns of Almeda and the Lee Slaughters of Bay City were recent visitors of the Willie Rapstains.

Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Genzer, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins visited Mr. and Mrs. Ray McVey and family in Madisonville and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Maddox in Bryan.

Hope everyone has a lovely Thanksgiving. Drive carefully if you’re going to be on the highways.
