Some facts about Collegeport History…The High School building was never a part of the Gulf Coast University. During the first year, while the school was being built, the pupils of the lower classes attended school in the south wing of the Federated Church and the other students attended classes in the Gulf Coast University of Industrial Arts located in the area where the Mopac House now stands…Mrs. Mamie Pennington who resides in Collegeport is the daughter of the cowboy, Bob Murry, who worked on the Slough Ranch before Collegeport was founded…None of the pioneers who settled in Collegeport reside here now. Dean and Dorothy Merck are the only people residing here who arrived in 1909 with their parents, the B. V. Mercks of Oklahoma and the Gus Franzens of Iowa. There are a number of descendants of the pioneers residing here: Rosalie Nelson Ellis, Mamie Franzen Wells, Gus Franzen, Alex, Franzen, Thomas Holsworth. Children of the cowboys who were working on the Mad Island Ranch and Slough Ranch before the founding of Collegeport are Fred King and Jimmy Murry and Mamie Murry Pennington.
