James E. Cowart, M.D.
Jan. 25, 1929 – July 3, 2012

James E. Cowart, M.D. passed away on July 3, 2012 in Fairfax, Virginia. He was 83.

Dr. Cowart was born January 25, 1929 in Locker, San Saba Co, Texas to Edgar T and Clara Mae Fry Cowart, the fourth of six children.

His family moved to Dallas in 1932 and then to Rusk, Texas during his sophomore year in high school. There he met Helen Holcomb.

They were married August 29, 1948. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College in 1949. He was accepted to Baylor College of Medicine in 1949 and completed in 1953.

He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp from 1954 to 1956. In 1957 he moved to Bay City, Texas to start his medical practice with classmate Joe N. Cannon, M.D. He continued his practice of Family Medicine there for 50 years until his retirement in 2007. During his practice, he also gained Fellowship in the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians.

He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many Ward and Stake callings and offices as Elder, Stake Seventy, High Priest, and Stake Patriarch.

He loved the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and was instrumental in blessing the lives of many people because of his devotion to the Lord.

He is survived by: his wife of 63 years, Helen H. Cowart; sons, Robert Walter Cowart II and Sandy and John Timothy Cowart and Aimee; daughters, Mary Frances Cowart and Agatha Anne Jenkins and Mark. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his siblings, Lewis Jackson Cowart, Minnie Lee Cowart, Robert William Cowart, Walter Harold Cowart, and Vera Mae Cowart Pinson; and his son, James E. (Jed) Cowart Jr. and daughter in law, JoAnn Haws Cowart.

A Graveside Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday July 9, 2012 at the Holcomb Family Cemetery, south of Rusk, Texas.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2012 in Bay City, Texas at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 2813 Carey Smith Blvd.

Helen Holcomb Cowart
January 19, 1929  - December 16, 2016

Helen Florence Holcomb Cowart passed away on December 16, 2016 in her home in San Antonio, Texas surrounded by her family. She was 87 years old.

Helen was born on January 19, 1929 in Bulah, Texas to Harvey and Norene Holcomb, the third of four children.

She graduated from Rusk High School in 1945 and attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas where she studied music. In 1948, she married James E. Cowart and they had five children and numerous foster children.  They moved to Bay City, Texas in 1957 and lived there until they retired to San Antonio in 2007. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and helped organize the Women’s Republican Club and the first Pink Ladies Association at the Matagorda General Hospital. She was active in her children’s schools with PTA and booster clubs.  She also owned and operated the Kids and Co. daycare for several years.

Helen had a lifelong love of music and sang throughout her life in various church and choral organizations, including the Houston Symphony Chorale under the direction of Alfred Urbach.

Helen was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many local and regional assignments within various organizations of the church.  She exemplified a life of Christian service and devotion to her Savior.  She loved people and took care of them and her home was always open to friend or stranger.

Helen is survived by her children, Robert Walter Cowart II (Sandy), John Timothy Cowart (Aimee), Mary Frances Cowart, and Agatha Anne Jenkins (Mark); and two siblings, Emmett Holcomb and Mary Jane Wylie.  She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James E. Cowart; her son, James E. “Jed” Cowart Jr. and daughter-in-law, JoAnn Haws Cowart; her parents; and her sister, Mamie Miller.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Adams Chapel Methodist Church in Bulah, Texas.

Interment followed at the Holcomb Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 11 a.m. in San Antonio, Texas at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 645 Knights Cross Drive.
