Julius Augustus “Gus”
Brown was born on October 16, 1868, in Alabama and was the son of
David Simpson Brown and Adeline Bailey Brown. Gus married Ellen
Sanders, daughter of Lewis Gartley Sanders and Margaret Ewing
Sanders, in Red River County, Texas, on March 2, 1894. Gus and Ellen
lived in Wharton County for several years before moving to Matagorda
County in the early 1900s and to Buckeye about 1911. Gus and Ellen reared
eight children: David, Reuben, Maggie, Walter, Florence, Robert Lee,
Hettie and Fred Hayden. Two sons, David and Reuben, were members of
Company G of the National Guard which served on the Mexican border
in 1916 to help prevent Pancho Villa from invading Texas. Gus Brown was a
trustee for School District 14, Buckeye, and later for the Markham
Independent School District when the two districts combined. He
built a school bus from an old pickup truck and transported the
Buckeye children to and from Markham each day. Although Gus had no
formal education, he somehow acquired a little medical training and
during the Depression he delivered babies and attended the sick of
the families who were too poor to afford a doctor. After truck farming in
Buckeye for many years, Gus retired in 1940, sold the farm to his
son Fred, and moved to Houston to be near several of his children.
Gus died on April 14, 1952, and Ellen died on August 14, 1960. Both
are buried in Resthaven Cemetery in Houston. Fred H. Brown was born
on December 18, 1911, in Buckeye. About 1930, Fred married Gladys
Brast, daughter of Richard & Adeline Vierick Brast. Gladys died July
14, 1934, as the result of a car-train collision in Louisiana. On
December 23, 1935, Fred married Alice Louise Griffith, daughter of
John and Bertha Short Griffith. Alice died on February 18, 1973, and
was buried in Resthaven Cemetery in Houston. On February 9, 1974,
Fred married Ora Dell Brast Kimball, daughter of Richard & Adeline
Vierick Brast and moved near Van Vleck. Fred was employed by Edgar B. Davis of the United North and South Development Company and worked in the Buckeye oil fields. He later worked for the Halliburton Company for twenty-five years before starting the company Hickey and Brown in Markham.
