Leon Guzick, the second son of Hyman and Lunia "Lizzie" Saksenburg Guzick, was born in Warsaw, Poland, on September 12, 1911. Leon, his mother, and his older brother, Sam (later of San Diego, California), immigrated to the United States through the Port of Galveston in 1912, joining their father and husband who had come to the United States one year earlier and had secured employment with the railroad in Cleburne, Texas.
Leon moved to Houston, Texas, with his family in 1914 when his father joined the H.& G. N. railroad as a machinist. Leon's father later worked for the Southern Pacific railroad as a steam-pipe fitter until the national railroad strike. The Guzick family then moved to Sherman, Texas, where Leon's father worked for the Frisco railroad until his retirement.
In addition to his older brother, Leon had two younger brothers who were born in the United States: Morris, born in 1913, lived in Sherman; and Frank, born in 1915, lived in Dallas.
Leon began school in Houston and later graduated from high school in Sherman in 1931. Upon completing high school, in the midst of the depression, Leon hitchhiked to Houston and began formal employment as a salesman in a shoe store there. Leon soon learned of a better job opportunity in Bay City and went there that year, joining a local dry goods store, Rosenzwelg's, where he was soon doing the buying for men's and boys' wear and for all footwear. Leon, with another longtime Bay City resident, Mrs. Gertrude Cox, managed the store for thirty-eight years.
Leon, who worked in the dry goods business in Bay City until the time of his retirement in 1985, was a member of the Lions Club attending two international conventions. He was also chairman of the Bay City Rice Festival in 1962. Leon served as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and was known for his Halloween parties held for all Bay City children at Rosenzweig's where he was employed. He also served as a staff sergeant in the Texas State National Guard during World War II. Raye Kogutt Guzick, daughter of longtime Bay City residents Pincus and Leah Roseman Kogutt, was born on June 1, 1913, ln Miedrysch, Poland (Russia). Raye immirated through New York with her mother and her older brother, Pete, in 1920. Upon arriving in the United States, they joined their father who had previously immigrated to the United States, settling in Nacogdoches. Eventually, the family moved to Bay City and established a shoe repair business. The Kogutts' home was situated at 2509 Avenue H.The Kogutts had three more children after arriving in the United States: Sarah (Mrs. Sidney Schwartz) of Bay City; Albert Meyer of Houston; and Samuel of Dallas.
Raye grew up in Bay City and graduated from high school in 1934. During high school she worked for Rosenzweig's, a local dry goods store, and continued there full time after graduation. It was there that she met Leon Guzick, who was also employed by the store. Leon and Raye were married in the Kogutt family home in 1934. Raye was active in Hadassah, continuing her employment in the dry goods store and rearing four children: Dr. Norman David Guzick, lived in Houston in 1987; Charlotte Faye Guzick Bradley, lived in Plano; Louis Max Guzick, lived in Katy; and Dr. Maury Alan Guzick, lived in Dallas.
The Guzicks had seven grandchildren: Jonathan Paul Guzick, born August 26, 1973, died July 24, 1980; Robyn Leigh Bradley; Sarah Lynn Guzick; Meredith Anne Bradley; John Brooks "Jay" Bradley III, Lauren Elizabeth Guzick, and Julia Lean Guzick.

Graveside services for Leon Guzick, 79, of Bay City will be held noon Monday at the West Hill Cemetery in Sherman with Rabbi David Stern officiating. Mr. Guzick died Friday. Survivors include his wife, Ray Guzick; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Norman Guzick and Arlene Guzick, Louis and Barbara Guzick and Dr. Maury Guzick and Susan Guzick; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Brooks Brandley; three brothers, Sam, Morris and Frank Guzick; and six grandchildren, Sarah Lynn Guzick, Robyn Bradley, Meredith Bradley, Jay Bradley, Julia Guzick and Lauren Guzick. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are with Levy Funeral Directors, Houston.

Raye Kogutt Guzick passed away on May 14, 2002 in Plano, Texas. A previous resident of Bay City. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished her life with her family. Blessed with good health and an independent spirit. A lifetime member of Hadassah. She was loved by all who came in contact with her. Preceded in death by her husband Leon and grandson Jonathan. Survived by her children: Dr. Norman Guzick of Houston, Mrs. Charlotte Bradley of Plano, Louis Guzick of Kay and Dr. Maury Guzick of Dallas; grandchildren: Robyn, Meredith, Sarah, Jay, Lauren and Julia; brothers, Pete and Sam Kogutt; sister, Sarah Schwartz and other relatives. Graveside services will be on Thursday, May 16, 2002 at 11 a. m. at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas. Rabbi Mark Kaiserman officiating.
