With Our Men In Service...During Previous Wars

C. J. Hansen, one of the pioneer settlers of the Deutschburg community was in Palacios Monday on business and made the Beacon office a pleasant call. Mr. Hansen (one of our boys in the service of former wars) is a War Veteran and showed us some of the medals he had bestowed upon him.

In the Sioux Indian War of 1890-91 as a member of the Nebraska National Guard he received a medal for service rendered the State of Nebraska. In the Philippine Insurrection in 1899 he was awarded the Congressional medal for "Patriotism, Fortitude and Loyalty."

He served in Manila for one year and was a 1st Lieutenant of Co. I, First Regiment.

His serial number of "Dog Tag" was 86, in the Nebraska Regiment, for the Spanish American War.

Mr. Hansen will be 84 years old next January and has made his home in Deutschburg since 1910, coming there from Nebraska.

Deutschburg School
First Year--1912-1913

The School was located one mile north of the present site. The land was given for the school through the influence of Dr. H. Gerhard as a part of a contract he had with the Valley Fruit Farm and Garden Company. A small school house was built and school opened in 1912 for its first time. The first trustees were Chas. Thatcher, John Evers and Chris. Hansen. School opened with the enrollment of twenty-four pupils. Miss Gwinn has the honor of being the first teacher, but illness in her family caused her to resign and the term was finished by Miss Bessie Meadows.
